Yes I always have the felt pad on the spindle. You made me think about something, though---I never use a spool cap. Wonder if things go differently with a cap on top of the thread?

I have machines with a vertical spindle and they have a felt pad but no cap. My machine with the horizontal spindle has a spool cap and without it the spool of thread wouldn't stay on the spindle. Do machines with vertical spindles come with spool caps?

That's so funny! I'm sure it's beautiful! But I think you have a bit too much time on your hands!

LOL, maybe you should make little doilies to sell. You might start a new fad.

Haha! I laughed out loud when I read this.

I was always told these things were just so that the thread didn't rattle around on the spindle. Little did I know they actually serve a practical purpose as well. My machine cover is plastic, so no need to worry about paint, but it would be nice if they help the thread pull smoother. I was nervous they might add friction & cause the thread to pull at a slower rate and more be taught.
Does anyone know if you're supposed to use wool felt or is the eco felt okay? (or is there something even better?)

I would be miserable if I had no time for a little cute. LOL. I'm serious about this being the thing for machines, especially vintage machines. I have made a lot of them for my quilting friends. They can't help but smile.

I have a little foam like one. It is for the vertical thread pin. Helps the tread spool turn smoother while you are sewing with it. It's quieter too

My new (4 yrs old) machine does not have one. I would guess that it is basically for making the spinning spool not be so loud as it rattles around.
