Do you have multiple projects going or one at a time?
I am working on 7 different quilts right now---6 for my grandchildren, and one for Quilts for Kids! Two of the quits just need to be quilted, one is ready for borders, one is half sewn, and 3 of them have been cut out.
Do you work on multiple projects or one at a time? |
i always have multiple projects under way. if i get bored or need to think about the next step for a while, i can work on another project in the meantime.
I have 4 in progress right now. I have a short attention span and I work better this way.
Ideally, I would have 4 projects going at any one time.
1. In process of quilting 2. UFO in progress (I have many UFOs and this is how I get them done now). 3. Swap or Quilt-a-long 4. Whatever draws my attention - be it new, UFO or in process. I am eliminating #3 for the rest of the year due to too much on my plate, but it's a good plan! I don't usually precut projects since I always do test blocks and rarely do 2 of the same project at the same time. |
I am now working on 2 quilts. I envy the people who can work on 4 to 7 at a time. I would probably get the pieces all mixed up.
I used to do one thing at the time but over the last couple of years have more than one going at the time. I have 3 in the works right now.
Always! Currently I have my son's quilt. To distract me from that when I get bored, I am recycling T-shirts into ruffled pillows and a rag rug.
always............................................ .....
Guilty!! I usually have something to machine, something to hand-work at night and something in the planning stages. Currently am making purses for the daughters, embroidery squares to make a quilt and planning a music quilt for granddaughter.
I am working on piecing two quilts, have two ready for binding and am doing 4 Block of the Month blocks each month. I have just returned from vacation so I am behind on 2 BOM; however, I did complete one hand appliquéd BOM while on vacation. I got home an hour ago and can't wait to get back to all of my projects.
I think I have to many to count. The ones that I can see are a paper pieced, a wall hanging, a bed runner that needs to be sandwiched and quilted, another one that is sandwiched but needs quilting. I have other ones in progress but don't know what I need to do with them. Guess I have alot of UFOs.
Pat in finally raining MN |
Guilty too. I have 2 tops waiting to be quilted and 1 set of blocks ready to be sashed. I got distracted with the cute little shirt tissue holders and a couple of thread catchers. I won't say how many UFO's I've got squirreled away.
i work on piecing one quilt top at a time so i know where i stop each time. i do have 4 tops ready to LA though. i like binding in the colders months so i tend to let those stack up.
Of course!
It's the only way I can stick to quilting at all. I get things done frequently, but in a very random way. One day I'm full of enthusiasm for one thing, and the next it will be something else. I give priority to things that have some sort of deadline, such as things I promise to do for the guild, or something for a birthday or other gift, but I don't feel the least apologetic for doing what I feel like doing most of the time. Quilting is my hobby to follow as I please.
I currently have 5 going in different stages of completion.
Oh goodness - I have one in almost all of the phases. One is being pieced and on the design wall. One is ready for sandwiching and basting. 2 are basted and ready to quilt and 2 are ready for binding. It all depends on what I'm in the mood to do. I'm on a binding kick lately and have finished binding 3 lap quilts in the last 2 weeks. Proud of myself for that:)
I always have multiple things going. It breaks the boredom!!!
Yes. In an ideal world, (do let me know if you find the portal to that world, won't you?) I would have my main piecing project, my leader/ender project, my UFO Challenge, one maybe two BOMs, my embroidery project and my hand quilting.
So, what's going on in the real world? I'm currently piecing Abbey Road -- a Turning Twenty pattern, I'm hand quilting my DWR, I have a applique project in '100s' of pieces scattered between the ironing board and design wall. I have fallen 3 and 4 months behind on my BOMs, but I am current on my UFO Challenge. My leader/ender project has gotten to the point it requires a bit of thinking. I have a bit of prep work before I can work on my next embroidery block. But then yesterday I pulled out a stack of quilt tops to see what needed backing and I have a stack of 4 quilts which need the backings pieced and another 4 that I need to purchase fabric for. I'm going to try and finish Abbey Road in the next day or two then get back to the applique project this weekend. BTW -- we won't talk about the rest of the quilts patiently waiting for me to finish piecing them or the quilt tops waiting to be quilted. |
You bet! Today I finished a baby quilt for a friend's daughter and now I will go back to the one that needs more fmq and binding. Or I'll do some garment sewing with the fabric that's sitting on the sewing table just ready to be cut.
I try to work on one at a time, but right now I have one to bind, 2 that need to go to the LAQer, and 3 I'm piecing. Oh yes, the pp that I work on when I'm watching tv or traveling. Too many right now! :)
Of course, I have multiple projects going at one time. I have been sewing since I was 10 years old, so I guess that means I have had more than one thing going for like, 35 years!
I have at least 1 quilt in each stage of the process. I am also working on cutting for 3 different postage stamp swaps. This is my hobby (obsession) and I work on whatever I feel like working on. I try not to get myself on deadlines to get things finished - takes the fun out of it for me. This is what works for me and I am pretty good about finishing things...eventually. |
Have a few going but like to try to get one done before starting another one. Like to see the finished project.
I have 4 right now..I always have a large quilt for a grand in progress (have 14 0f them!) I always keep a hand stitch project going for while I wait at doctors or for kids. I work on purses and small projects when I need a break to start gift making, and my string quilt gets a few blocks added as I get a different variety of strings in my stash
Oh, I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone! I have so many projects going I've almost stopped working on them! I have two totally finished quilts, one all sandwiched and ready to quilt, about a dozen 6" Dutchman's Puzzle blocks done, several paper-pieced blocks done and into a closed container, to be added to as boredom dictates, and I'm trying really hard to not start anything else, but a watercolor log cabin keeps calling to me. I'm trying to find my ear plugs! :D
I seriously think I need a maid, even though DH doesn't care one whit if he has clean clothes or the house has dust bunnies. I had to stop everything today and mop floors, run a couple of loads of laundry and cook breakfast and dinner. I'm having trouble finding "me time" this week. My sewing machine went into the shop again two weeks ago, so I've been using a machine I don't like. I finally just quit after a few days, spent most of my "spare" time on the computer posting here, and waited for my machine to come home. Got it back yesterday and now I have to make DH go away long enough for me to gather my own thoughts instead of his! lol |
I like to have multiple projects going. That way if I am getting bored with one and need a break, there is something else I can do. I have 3 projects going on right now. A quilt top that is ready for me to get the backing pieced, then it's ready for basting and FMQing. I also have blocks cut out for another lap quilt. And I started working on a tote tonight.
I don't think I would have more than 3 or 4 projects going at the same time though. One thing I don't want are UFO's, and so far I have avoided that. So I like the variety, but it needs to be manageable. :-) |
I have 4 active projects going right now. One is a bargello in purples that is 1/4 sewn together. I have a quilt that I designed myself that I'm anxious to get back to. I'm spending most of my time on a wedding quilt that I'm making for a customer...it's a queen. Then there's the graduation quilt for my oldest granddaughter that is cut out, waiting to be sewn together. The last two paragraphs from Helen S. fit me to a "T" except for the sewing machine problem. I had to clean the bathrooms and vacuum today, then get food ready for a church dinner. DH will be busy rounding up cattle tomorrow, so maybe I'll get something done in my sewing shed!
I can't count how many projects I have going. Between crochet and quilting I have too many to count.
When I started out quilting about 3 years ago I wouldn't start a new top until I finished the one I was working on. But, that didn't last long. Now I have numerous ones in the works. I have English Paper Piecing for traveling, a quilt that needs applique on the borders (hand work at night) and several tops in the making. If I get bored with one, I go to another. I found my work turns out better now since I'm not hurrying to get the current quilt done so I can move on. Now I have choices to fit my mood and love it!

I have several going on right now. I'm always working on multiple projects.
In other crafts like knitting and counted cross stitch I usually do have multiple projects going but in quilting I don't. Right now I am cutting fabrics for my next project. But I am also "practicing" machine quilting with my new machine so I can be quilting as well as piecing quilts at the same time.
Does that count the two I put away for a while because I am sick of them?
Always have multiple projects in the works, some days I want to hand quilt, some days I want to choose colors and cut pieces, or run them through the sewing machine.
As a new quilter I'd been really careful not to add to my knitting UFOs and had never started a new project until I'd finished the current one. However I got really fed up of permanently appliquing my large Edyta Sitar quilt to the point I wasn't going near it for days. Fortunately I've 'let go' a little and took time out to make a Two Hour (I wish!!) Tulip bag, which I finished and it's cheered me up no end!
NOTE TO SELF: Relax a little! |
Normally I only work on one project because I don't have the room otherwise, but this year I'm working on two BOM's and I'm making toddler quilts for great grandchildren and having fun in between with other little projects. I am presently working on a toddler quilt for a 4 yr old girl & I've started with a pinwheel & am designing my way out. Hope to have the top done soon so I can get it done before we meet her.
I try to do one at a time but right now I'm working on two. . I started cutting out fabric for a pattern I saw on Missouri Star and decided I needed more colors. This one will have to wait for the weekend trip to the fabric store. It's so frustrating not having a fabric shop close. So in the meantime, I started on another one.
Always more than one going and planning stages for something else to start.
I usually have multiple projects going too, in various stages and of various complexities. I try to only have one "tricky piecing" quilt top going at a time, I'll offset that with a simpler blocky quilt or strip quilt, and then there's always at least one or two finished tops waiting to be basted, or that are basted waiting to be quilted, or are quilted waiting for binding. I like having lots of options when I walk into my sewing room. And naturally there's always something on the design wall and on my graph paper being created...
I wouldn't know what to do if I only had one project going at a time! Have two quilt tops ready to be quilted, practicing with Frank (the new machine), piecing a Crazy Diamonds and a pattern of my own devising (more complicated, which is why I am also doing Crazy Diamonds!), and hand quilting another one. (Err... and weaving a shawl, and making a rug, and a few other things).
I really need to finish some of these things! Shay |
