I am looking for a table i can put my machine in where the machine sits flush with the table... right now I have a Brother CS6000 and I have the extension table but it's not inside the table so It's stil kinda hard. I've been sewing like this for 5 years and I think it's time to upgrade to a better table. So it just got me thinking...

How many of you have your macine on top of the table and how many of you have a real sewing table where the machine is inside so it's flush with the table? Here is a pic of my setup...

I set my machine up on the breakfast table while I dream about someday having a sewing room.

GGinMcKinney 05-12-2011 09:18 PM

I have an Arrow table. My model is big Bertha. It is the Bertha with the leaf on back that can raise up when quilting and the extra table is needed. My machine
sets flat and has a lift. I figure when I get older I will need the lift to help raise
the machine up when the table is closed and machine is stored out of sight.
Love my table. Fits my Janome 6600P with lots of extra space.
I do have the clear extension insert so my machine stitching area is flat with the top of the table surface.
I cover the top with clear vinyl so my fabric easily slides across the space.

Annaquilts 05-12-2011 09:21 PM

I have a 4-14 foor conference table but I think having it set in a table that is raised would be the most ideal. I think it would cut down on fatigue and strain from sewing especially when quilting. I have seen people ellevate regualr wooden kitchen tables and making a hole in it for the sewing machine. thsi might be a better and cheaper solution then buying something.

Jim's Gem 05-12-2011 09:24 PM

I have a wonderful table that my machine sinks into. It has an extension on the back that folds up to give me a large surface, 4 drawers and a pull out over the drawers to give me more room on the left. I love it!!!

How dd they make a table with a hole in it like that? that sounds so cool!

I have a table just about like yours!

We must have the same unit. It is perfect when you are quilting, but a real bear when people use it to set things on, similar to a kitchen table or catch-all. BTW, it is a hydraulic lift that you are seeking. It is awesome!

sallie789 05-12-2011 10:02 PM

My Pfaff sits flush in my cabinet and then it raises up easily so that I can get to the bobbin. I love it. I'm not coordinated enough to sew well with the machine above table level!

Gramie bj 05-12-2011 10:25 PM

My Janoma sits on top of an old desk, or on a folding table, or the counter in the craft room, some day it will have its own table I hope. My Elna has a cabnet but right now it isn't in it, cabnet needs some work my other two are stored on a shelf and only come out when GK's are here and want to sew. Some day they will go home with 2 of the girles.

JanetM 05-12-2011 10:40 PM

I have a Horn table, so my machine sits flush with the top. Horn and Koala tables are really pricey (I've had mine for years) so if I were looking for one today, I would check out the Arrow products.

Becky Crafts 05-12-2011 11:59 PM

I use a wooden tray table, but have been eyeing one of those tables from SewEze that puts your machine down in to make it flush with the table. Everything I've read on them is positive. I just have to wait until I can afford one.

Katy 05-13-2011 12:09 AM

I have the sew EZ table and it is quite nice. I also have two sewing tables in my sewing room. Most of these would not have been mine if I had to purchase but I inherited them from my wonderful quilty girlfriend when she went to see Jesus several years ago. The Sew EZ is so portable and you can use different inserts for different machines. It is great. I would never have purchased a Koala Cabinet myself but it came with Lynda's beloved Babylock Ellegante. It is a very nice piece of furniture and the hydrolic part is quite nice. I no longer ever put it away however.

Airwick156 05-13-2011 12:59 AM

I have a table 60 x 60 upstairs piled high with fabric and other crap that my darling HUSBAND seems to put there. (yes I said that sarcasticly). Soooooooooo tonight I sewed the quilt for kids quilt top totally on top of my portable dishwasher. Hubby wasn't happy, BUTTTTTTTTT....tonight I DON'T CARE. Hehehe.

makakehau 05-13-2011 01:37 AM

As a matter of fact, I just bought a new Samsonite 6 foot
folding plastic table tonight. Total investment? $54.00. Probably not
nice by a lot of peoples standards, but it is the nicest I have ever had and it's a tremendous upgrade from crawling around in the
floor. Guess it's all relative, right?

I have a Horn table and the machine sits down flush with the table. I love it - makes everything the right height, no shaking of the table while I sew, and it's much easier to maneuver a quilt. I have seen Horn tables on craigslist at much reduced prices, so if I didn't already have one I would look there.

emerald46 05-13-2011 02:59 AM

I have 2 Koala units - big Rollabout upstairs and small cub unit downstairs (since I broke my ankle). Love them both and the hydraulic lift is the only way to go.

scowlkat 05-13-2011 03:33 AM

I had an Arrow 300 model for years and absolutely loved it, however, the opening was not large enough for my new machine. When I bought my Ellisimo, instead of the software that was being offered, I talked the dealer into a deal on a display model Horn cabinet. It is absolutely wonderful but honestly would have been happy with another Arrow.

I like the looks of the SewEzi Table. Having your machine flush with the table surface is imperative for me.

CompulsiveQuilter 05-13-2011 03:35 AM

I have just ordered a custom counter top (from a kitchen supply company) for a suprisingly low price - about $100 for a 25 x 58. They will cut the template for the size of my machine and my friend will build the "platform" underneath to put the machine level with the countertop and add 4x4 legs, which I will paint. That rounded edge on the front of the table is what I'm most looking forward to! And it will be exactly the length my room can handle! I'm doing the happy dance, even before I get it!

Smart thinker!

My machine is on top of an old desk that I keep thinking I'll have hubby cut the top off and let the machine rest in the drawer.

Ahhhh someday.....

bisbetica 05-13-2011 03:48 AM

I have a SewEZ table and I love it! It makes my machine just the right height. I can fold it up and take it with me or put it away when I need too. It wasn't cheap, but it was sooooo worth it! I have 2 plexiglass inserts for it now for 2 different machines. Love it!

Izaquilter 05-13-2011 03:59 AM

I have the 'custom made" look also! Bought a counter top from a local over stock dealer, put it on 4 cabinets, put a permanent bottom on it (I didn't need the hydraulic lift because I'd never put my machine away anyway!) & painted it white....

mpspeedy 05-13-2011 03:59 AM

I have a 24" by 48" table from Staples that has legs that fold up so you can collapse it and store it. My husband the "machinist" was kind enough to cut the legs down so that it is 27" high . This makes my sewing machine bed just the right angle for my arms. I have a slide on clear extension on my sewing machine which I love. I actually broke the original at a retreat. Again my "machinist" husband came to the rescue by replacing the broken top with a sheet of plexglass. I like the clear top as it allows me to store things under it but they are visible. I also use a tilt table that I got from Nancy's Notions. My sewing setup is as ergonomic as I can make it. It does allow me to sew much longer and less painfully as I have major muscle issues.

dmyers 05-13-2011 04:24 AM

I have a Koala table I bought 10 yrs ago, they don't make it anymore. It has a lift for the sewing machine to sit flush and adjusts for either my Pfaff or my Bernina. It's held up well with one move and still looks brand new. It's very heavy and sturdy. Just recently I looked to buy another small one, but I don't remember the cost being so high.

jrhboxers 05-13-2011 06:02 AM

I have one major problem with the portable tables like the Samsonite. If I am using my non-vintage metal machine - like my 1990's Singer - the whole table bounces when I sew anything longer than a couple of inches. I do not have this problem with any of my old girls.

We had a new thrift shop open in our area. When I checked it out they had an older sewing 'table' available. This one did not have the lid that open to expose the machine. The left side had a cut out to fit around the base of a machine. And when you lifted it, it came up and met the machine. It was really cool. And they only wanted $25 for it. Since I only have one machine that would fit, I just let it go.

My original someday list contained a 301 and a treadle to go along with my Featherweights. I am getting ready to send my Red Eye to Billy to be redone. And I was able to recently purchase a beautiful 301. On my list now is one of the Featherweight tables. Then I could die a happy girl.

bebe 05-13-2011 06:17 AM

you can buy an extension table and much cheaper that a flushed table
i have a clear hard plastic one on my bernina and gives me some extended room to sew on.

babyfireo4 05-13-2011 06:17 AM

Set mine right on the kitchen table and move it for meals. (Usually my guys just opt for eating on the couch lol

Cindy2201 05-13-2011 06:24 AM

I bought an old door for $8.00 and put folding legs on it. Then i put several pieces of insulation together to raise the height of the table and cut it out to fit my machine (if that makes any sense). It gives me a really large surface for quilting or sewing!

SueDid 05-13-2011 06:26 AM

Our main level is "L" shaped, kitchen at one end, living room at the other with the dining room connecting them.

For years now, the living room has been my sewing area, though we use it for an extra eating area when we have company.

My husband build shelves on the wall for my stuff and we bought an antique oak table for me to work on. Just recently, we swapped out the tables, so the oak one is in the dining room and I have the former dining room table, also oak, but with a formica top. It has two leaves that I can add when I need more space.

When I need a LOT of space, I clear off both tables and use them both!

MIJul 05-13-2011 06:26 AM

My sewing table is my grandmother's old formica top kitchen table, you know, the one with the curved sliver legs? Circa 1950's or thereabouts? Works for me even though I drool over the custom sewing tables I see in catalogs and on the internet.

mltquilt 05-13-2011 06:41 AM

I have a Koala cabinet that I purchase years ago that has a manual lift that raises with a push. I use this for my Bernina 150QE and my 200 when not embroidering. Has a side extension for when I use the embroidery machine. This being said I have a brand new 830 and it is hugh. Have it on an oak desk but would love to have a special cabinet for it.

I sew on on old mahogony dining room table that I picked up for $20 at a resale shop. It comes with 4 leafs. Was cheap due to a big scratch in the top.
I have seen people take a door and cut a hole in it for the machine...you could probably lay the door on top of your table.

great aunt jacqui 05-13-2011 06:53 AM

that is a good idea....you can get countertops,or remnants or seconds cheaper. But got to shop for someone to do cutting. IKEA has cheap tables and legs. I'll be thinkng of this myself...

Katydid2 05-13-2011 06:59 AM

Search in the tute section and you will see how some have made their own table for alot less. I have seen the mechanical lifts for $150-$200 on the internet. Unfortunately I am not handy enough so mine sit on top of a piece of kitchen counter laminate which rests on 2 filing cabinets. Someday ...

wannaquilt1 05-13-2011 07:00 AM

wow really? do you like it? I've had it for 5 years and if I get a sewing table I'll still use it for cutting. It's a great table! I just wish it had a hole for the machine.

CorgiNole 05-13-2011 07:09 AM

I don't know what brand I have. I got it from Craigslist last summer for about $100 and have been very happy with it. I do need to get an appropriate insert cut for it as the one that came with it doesn't work on my Bernina, but until I get around to that, I've got a slider taped down at the back of the machine so that blocks don't disappear into the space underneath.

Someday I'd like to have one with a lift that drops the machine below the cabinet, but for now this one is great.

Pictures of my sewing corner are here:

Cheers, K
