I have 3 tattoos. Mine are a permanent reminder of all the hard work I've put into recovering from a very tramatic childhood. The damage was permanent, so I want a permanent record so I don't forget that I have self worth. I drew all of my tattoos so they are very personal to me, and for me. But I realize that not everyone feel the same way that I do.

KatFish,
Good for you! I was touched by your words and the work you have done. I have done a lot of personal work, too, and have come a long way. My childhood was not as traumatic as many people have had, but there have been many other traumas in my life with my family and the journey of recovery took me back to my childhood.

Keep up the good work and the powerful statements. We all need reminders whether we realize it or not.

I can't imagine having something permanent on my body. I thought long and hard about even piercing my ears!
I can only imagine what those tattoos will look like years from now...when a cute little dolphin on the backside becomes a whale, when a butterfly becomes a vulture. What about a chain around the neck, lost in wrinkles, and of course the previously stated wilted rose hanging low on a booby! Oh my gosh!

I have to agree, and while looking at the photos of the tats, I also noticed the redness around the tats. My opinion is WHY do that to yourself.

Pam 06-06-2010 12:12 PM

I thought I was making a graceful stride into old age when I changed the names of "the girls" from Perky and Pretty to Flip and Flop.

irma tapia 06-06-2010 12:41 PM

I agree......that's some nasty stuff!!!

mrsmail 06-06-2010 02:36 PM

No, thanks.

mjsylvstr 06-06-2010 02:53 PM

I'm pretty glad that I'm pretty old......
and beyond the years...and tattoos of the young modern quilter.

Margie 06-06-2010 03:08 PM

I have to say...I just dont understand the desire to "ink up your body"....there is no picture that I would want to look at every day...and I dont think they are pretty. I will stick to appliques or embroidery on shirts lol.

Different strokes for different folks.

Margie

BKinCO 06-06-2010 03:20 PM

Sign me up :)

I'd have to get rid of the dh first...the two I have are two more than enough for him ......

cjomomma 06-06-2010 03:22 PM

I hope I never suffer from alzheimers but if a doctor ever tells me I have it, the first thing I'm gonna do is get a tat of my name and home phone number along with my DH and kids names so they can identify and who I belong too. I'm not joking I am seriuos. After watching my DGM I am terrified of getting it and already have made plans. Told my hubby if I wonder into the woods to leave me there.

Scissor Queen 06-06-2010 03:22 PM

If I wasn't allergic to the ink I'd probably get a couple of cool quilty tattoos.

laughingquilter 06-06-2010 04:00 PM

Pam, loved your response. I know I can relate! I tease my younger sister about what'll happen when her vines and flowers start to sag and wilt.

quiltilicious 06-06-2010 07:08 PM

I have a tattooed wedding ring (DH has a matching one) I have another small tattoo "elsewhere" that only my spouse and my gynecologist have seen. I keep thinking about more, but I don't for 2 reasons:

First, the only place that won't continue to sag is the lower back, and I'm really not enthused about getting a "tramp stamp". saw a woman who had a tattoo on the side of her belly and probably before she had kids, it was a circle. It isn't anymore...

Second, if I had that much "spare money" laying around, I'd buy fabric with it!

pamsmpk 06-06-2010 07:14 PM

I've been thinking about getting a very small tat to celebrate my 50th birthday in July. I can't decide what to get. I thought a lot of these tattoos were cool but I don't want anything nearly so big. However. it did make me think...hmmmmm....maybe something quilty.....?????

wvdek 06-06-2010 07:43 PM

Both my kids have one. DD has a wolf (very nice one) on her outside ankle and DS has Tygrr outline on his arm between shoulder and elbow. However, both have said they wish they had never gotten them and wish they had listened when I told them they would be a permanent part of their being if they got one.

Not for me. Nuff said before I get into trouble.

MadQuilter 06-06-2010 08:35 PM

I think I passed "young" a few years back. Not sure I was young when I was young. Now that doesn't mean that I couldn't come up with a cool, hip 'n happenin' quilt design. As for the tat - I pretty much gave up on that: too many moles (don't wanna play connect the dots, lol), too hairy (don't want a bearded lady), and too much weight fluctuation (butterfly should not turn into Mothra). In general, I really like tats.

JNCT14 06-07-2010 04:19 AM

You're never too old. I got my belly button pierced for my 40th birthday gift to myself and have started a line of Japanese ideograms going down my back (and I am 50!!!) I figure if I like it then no one else should care. I draw the line at anything visible to others (especially at work). Never thought about a patchwork tat - hmmmm....

damaquilts 06-07-2010 05:06 AM

I also have 3. Two of which no one really sees. Mine was also picked for a reason. I have one on the back of my neck that my DD gave me as a Christmas present my astrological sign she got hers the same day. Good tattoos are beautiful and bad ones are not. My DD has plenty and they all mean something. I love them. I can no longer get any because of fibromyalgia and money of course. But if I could I would. And yes they would be related to sewing and maybe a pic of my Andy boy. he is just so darn cute.

grandma Janice 06-07-2010 05:48 AM

I can never understand the need to do something so permanent to our bodies. There are many old Military men who in their youth had all those tats but now wish they hadn't. If you must, put them somewhere that you can cover up. As for me, NO WAY!!!

irma tapia 06-07-2010 06:13 AM

I agree Margie!!!!! I never have understood why anyone would want to do that to their bodies.

GrammaNan 06-07-2010 09:20 AM

I guess that I am too conservative. My religious beliefs include not "painting" our bodies. However that has not stopped my son. LOL! He has a beautiful tattoo on his right arm from shoulder to wrist that he designed himself. Do I wish he didn't do it? Yes, but I am proud of that he made his own decision and research and got it done by a great tattoo artist.

There is some gorgeous ink there!!!

I don't want one myself...I can't imagine WHAT I would want to look at forever. But, if I 'did' my brother would design it for me. He has an amazing story in pictures on his body, every image tells a story...fascinating...

irma tapia 06-07-2010 04:54 PM

Can we PLEASE stop talking about tats????????

I'll try again. I don't feel bad, because this is actually a thread about tats.

KatFish 06-07-2010 05:23 PM

Love your tat!

anima57 06-07-2010 05:24 PM

like it as well! very delicate

pamsmpk 06-07-2010 05:26 PM

I am enjoying this thread! Who would have thought so many young people are enjoying sewing enough to get tats to commemorate this hobby we all share.BTW Hazeljane...love the greyhounds!

damaquilts 06-08-2010 03:11 AM

hazeljane that is beautiful. ya all are making me want to get a tattoo. But after the flare up I had yesterday I don't think so. I would love to get a quilt tattoo. I am also enjoying this thread. I just may book mark it to show the next person that tells me quilting is just a bunch of little old church ladies. I am glad to see the diversity and the acceptance here. How lovely!!

Lockeb 06-08-2010 03:54 AM

Well, this is had been a great thread to read before going to work - I love it..
But I also am one of those who can appreciate beautiful tattoos - as long as they are on someone else :-)......
I'm just afraid that where the tattoo is today may not be where it will end up tomorrow.. :-) I'm afraid of gravity :-)

Thanks for showing it!! It's lovely, has a very Illuminated Manuscript kind of feeling to it....

And to those who don't WANT to discuss this subject...can I politely ask WHY you keep opening and responding to the topic?

What a cool tat!!

Beth33 06-08-2010 07:21 AM

Have seen some really nice ones, a neighbor of mine is totally covered. The old folks around here are afraid of him, but he's a really nice guy.

However, I don't ink because I like to donate blood without waiting months in-between.

irma tapia 06-08-2010 01:34 PM

Why? Nobody's making you read it and nobody's making you get a tat either.

ps. I love my tats even if I'm allergic to the ink.

Kyiav10 06-08-2010 02:35 PM

I already have a tattoo. Not craft related.

Hubby promised me five more guns if I didn't get another one.....I don't htink he realizes that guns are usually more expensive. One down 4 more to go......hehe. But I won't hold him to all five but prolly at least one or two more!
