I just saw a Sharon Schamber video on Youtube. She loads the backing and then gets the wrinkles out with a misting of spray starch between the rollers. She said she prefers starch or sizing to water. Here is a link to where she demonstrates this:

i always pre-wash my wide backs- then remove them from the dryer before they are over-dried---then they are wrinkle/crease free & ready to load- much easier than handling on the ironing board- i tried the spray it on the frame once---was not happy with that method- fabric stretches if it's wet- if you wait for it to dry then quilt it all takes forever---turn spray...wait, wait wait- quilt- turn, spray, wait wait wait...not my idea of a good time.

I always iron. I do use one piece backing on the frame. But recently I have started using all the left over pieces from the front and that is ironed. This keeps the stash down.

I load my backings and spritz with Best Press. Love the light scent!
