you sandwich them? I have on some and not on others. Just wondering what everyone else does.
Yes, I do iron the quilt tops. I don't iron the blocks before I put them together, though.
Nope not me. I just don't have time or space for all that pressing.
I do. I like to improve the odds of having the seams lay as "attractively" as possible.
It's also a chance to see if there are any last minute glitches that might need to be touched up or changed. (Doesn't guarantee that I'll catch them all, but there is something about pressing that sometimes shows up wonkiness) I usually press the top while it is still in sections - it is a bit easier to handle it that way. I also press the backing if there are any seams in it. I also wash all my fabrics before cutting them. |
Like you, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
I tend to if it's lap size or smaller. Larger are just too much trouble unless absolutely necessary. |
Like "Bear-is-Gray" (she must be part native American!) i press mine...I'm a believer that pressing helps make the final product more square and helps keep everything lined up and also gives me the chance to check for stray threads, missed "oops" spots, etc.I think it also makes the sandwiching easier since I don't have to work so hard to get the top flat on the batting.
I press mine. For me, it means less chance of wrinkles when I sandwich them. I like to starch the top also.
Yes, I do. I want the quilt to lay as flat as possible before quilting. I also square it now and again after quilting.
Suzanne |
I press every step of the way. Each seam, each block when done, each time I put blocks together to a row, etc. It just gives it a crisp look. The last two tops I took to the quilter, she loved it.
I press at each step also. I helps to keep things square, and I think it looks better in the end too!
I press each step and starch before cutting fabric and starch the top after it is together and also starch the backing. Makes the quilt go together nicely and reduces the chance of wrinkles during quilting.
Yes I do iron them. I'm an over achiver when it comes to ironing. I iron when doing the blocks, then iron it all when it's together.

I press to make sure the seams are all laying the correct way and flat. It makes life much easier when machine quilting and you get a nicer, finished product.
I starch and iron as I go and then iron the sections. It helps me to baste and I don't have puckers on the back.
I iron the blocks before sewing them together, but not anymore after that...unless I'm working with a high loft bat, then I iron it down to make it easier to quilt after sandwiching it. Loosely baste it before ironing, then pin it after ironing it.
I press my blocks as I go. Press seams as I attach blocks together. and press again as I attach rolls together so by the time the top is completely stitched together it is iron. So Yes, I do press before I quilt it. I find that it makes SID sooooooo much easier.
Yes, I want it to look great even befort the sandwiching. Also think it makes it easier to baste.
I press my blocks, rows and the whole quilt top when done. I don't like ironing, but I like how it looks after I've done it so I'll keep on ironing my quilt tops. I'm like bearisgray and I also wash my fabrics before using them.
I press every time I piece (mostly). It helps me keep my points straight. I am a beginner, so I want to start with good habits maybe not perfect points LOL
always, the more I iron/press, the better the final product, also each step goes easier, good way to catch errors!
I starch, press and square up each block before assembling my quilt top. I know it takes a little longer but my finished quilt top is flatter and much more likely to be straight and square. I also give the completed top another press to send each row in the right direction before I pin and sandwich the top. I think I get a much better product for machine quilting this way.
I would never quilt a top that hasn't been pressed!
Yes, and it is one of my least favorite tasks. I dread that final ironing and getting all the seams in the right place.

I have been told that I could just put everything together and then press. I tried that on 2 rows and did not like the looks of it.
I finger press the seams as I go, and then press. After I am all done, I go over the quilt and see if there is anything that needs touch up or stray threads. I am doing a beginners bagello quilt now and alot of seams and, wanting them to lay as flat as possible |
I do, but not after I have marked them. So I have to make sure to keep from putting any hard creases in a marked top. My mom's Double Wedding Ring is an example. It has been marked for months! I have had it hanging over the guest bathroom shower curtain rod which was a pain! I had to move it every time one of the kids needed a bath. But I am almost done quilting it, so that pain is over!
I do, it helps seams to lie flat, the top to lay more square too.
I understand the need not to if it goes on a LA though... :D:D:D |
Bearisgray must be related to me. I do everything she does.
It depends. If I sandwich the quilt immediately after piecing, I will press the seams as I go. If the top spends a few months in a drawer I will give it a good pressing.
Yes I do.
Haven't finished one yet. I'll let you know. I do press as I piece, though.
I always press--even queen or king--two or better yet, three, ironing boards help a lot!
I do too.
I press almost more than I sew , just makes for fewer mistakes in the end results.
I do this too, I find it finishes of very nicely and easier to quilt.

Always iron (and I'm no fan of it).
I press everything, each and every step of the way!
