Our club needs a small project to sell and make a profit for the club at the next quilt show. Any ideas?

Potato bags, grocery bags (they are so popular now, everyone is going green) mini wall hangings.
Nametags. Our guild wants everyone to wear a nametag and some people just don't want to make their own but are willing to buy one ready-made. So if your guild expects everyone to wear nametags, make them and sell them.
Pot holders, place mats, table runners, candle mats
How about postcard made from photos of guild members quilts? Or make quick stationary using fabric scraps. Or perhaps fabric luggage tags for those bringing their machines to classes. Or scissors minders -- you know those short beaded things that can personalize your scissors so they don't inadvertantly walk away. Or maybe rotary cutter holders made from quilted pot holders or decorated eyeglasses cases.

I have a pattern for a double handle potholder which is really neat. I like Sharon b's ideas. Easy peasy but personalized.
Thanks for posting. I need ideas too.
The little wieghted waste bags that hang from the table, sewing mats with the pockets in them, remote control minders (those chair caddy things), chatalaines, mini quilt pins, or those tiny quilted keychains (there's a tutorial thread on here--posted around the end of May)

Lots of good ideas from the other posts, but also, pincushions are so easy to make. allpeoplequilt.com has several different kinds you can make and they are sooooo simple. Now they come in all shapes and sizes.
TOTES! The ones that are a little taller than what we usually see.
Pincushions and scrap catchers.
Luggage tags; small over the shoulder zipper bags, mouse pads, ruler holders (i made one to hang from a hanger in my closet); paperback book covers, tissue holders, coupon holders, coin holders, makeup bags, passport wallets. Gee, I can think of lots, which I had the time to make!!!!

How about baby bibs?
Sewing machine covers! I would buy a pretty one.
why not have everyone go through their sewing rooms and donate the things they are not using then have a "Country Store" with garage sale prices. We did this and made over $1,000. Not all items need to be sewing related just in good condition. You could call it Treasure Island, Country Store, etc. The key is no dirty or junky items and low prices. Gently used is good but worn out is not.

I was cleaning out my garage last week and came across this baby bib. I went and bought a bunch of washclothes at BIG LOTS! for cheap to make these. I am going to make these for a charity, but I bet they would be great sellers at craft sales and easy to make.
The closure is sticky velcro dots. |
Bibs for adults.
You can call them spaghetti catchers or something clever. |
Aprons are always nice.

wine glass coasters to fit onto wine glass and travel with the glass...tried to find link to what I've made but no luck,
wine bags - like a skinny tote bag to carry a wine bottle.

Wow, you all have given me some great ideas. My husband just received notice that he will be layed off the end of August. He didn't make it to retirement, 4 years short of full pension. Fortune 50 company. Is the economy getting better? All these ideas will help. Thanks!

Wear-on-a-finger pin-cushions - the pincushion uses a bottle cap for its base and elastic to hold the pincushion on your finger
Hanging ruler holders - a couple of them have been shown on this forum wooden ruler holders - if you have someone handy with wood - they look comparatively easy to make. Mini ironing boards - maybe 15 x 15? - with a hard (wood) base - I have a June Tailor cutting mat/pressing side combination - but if I do a lot of ironing/pressing on it at one time, the cutting mat gets unhappy. |
I love Quiltmarms idea, love those kinds of sales!
It does sound more appealing that "garage/rummage/yard" sale
I can't wait to see what you make. Please post pics.

Hi there...
I saw a quilting show the other day, and thought WOW...what a cool idea is that! Since so many have laptops these days, they were showing a very speedy way to make a zippered sleeve for a laptop. I think they called it a laptop skin. At any rate. one could use pre-quilted or self made quilted fabric, or even do a crazy quilt thing of scraps. Lay your laptop on top of the fabric. to 'get the size right' ..allow for seams and a laptop inside. cut two pieces of fabric. Before sewing the sides, put in a zipper for the top. (I suggest a 19 to 22 inch one) Then turn zipper side and fabrics inside out. Unzip the zipper and serge or machine stitch the surrounding sides. Voila...this makes a cool cover to keep the scratches off your laptop when you travel or whatever. If one wanted they could cut a strap for carrying the laptop and make it go around the three sides and long enough for a shoulder carry thing. Perhaps we could consider dark colors or blues for a guy, and perky colors for the ladies would make neat gifts to buy at a sale. They even showed one in which someone used two zippers to open even further the top of the 'sleeve'. Hope this info is helpful. Happy Fathers Day to the dads out there! |
Jewelry rolls. They are quick and easy. Only about $1.00 worth of cloth and 1 hr of time to make.
Believe it or not Aprons are a hot item now. Since you are selling to quilters , make some of your own jelly rolls or bundles.
Used quilt books sell well. |
Table runners and table toppers :D
Great post. Lots of ideas.
Wow! What a lot of great ideas! I always enjoy thumbing through quilt, craft, and sewing magazines that members are done with, usually selling for 50 cents. I have also bought patterns sorted into baskets by type - women's clothing, crafts, etc. One year I bought some small stuffed pumpkins at a fall quilt show and used them through Thanksgiving. Other soft sculptures appropriate for seasonal decorating are nice too. Good Luck!
