Do you know this pattern?

I am looking for the name of this pattern. When I found it is was called Sonnies Play House. I would like to find a tutorial so that I can make a block.

Sparkling Lake 11-02-2012 06:50 PM

Thanks. I love that site too. Spend lots of time on it! I looked but it isn't there. I have been trying all day to figure out how to make it. I am new at quilting so I don't know a lot of techniques yet.

ghostrider 11-02-2012 08:38 PM

It's from the 7/10/1935 issue of the Kansas City Star and the name is Sonnie's Play House, like you said.

It's on point, so if you turn it with the x as a + you could easily figure out how to make it and then just trim it to size. Make sense?

Sparkling Lake 11-02-2012 08:48 PM

Thank you ghost rider. I think I do understand. I will try it in the morning. It's better than tilting my head to see it. I have drawn many drafts but keep getting confused. I am going to figure it out! I am new at quilting, just a could of months, and have been making blocks of different designs to learn. Having a wonderful time!!

Sparkling Lake 11-02-2012 08:57 PM

Do you know if I start in the middle and work out? I have been trying to start at the top. I also realized that the points of the triangles will be cut off if I stop there. So I am thinking I have calculated the size of the triangles wrong. The way I have been looking at it there would not be the 1/4 " allowance. Back to the drawing board first thing in the morning!

ghostrider 11-02-2012 08:58 PM

Watch out for bias edges on the outside of the block. It'd be safer with setting and corner triangles (the outer white pieces), but I'm not sure if that's beyond your skill level right now. The pattern is available, but not by itself...only in books with other KCS block patterns.

Draw it all out on graph paper to get the block measurements right. Once you have the measurements of the sewn together block, you can cut appart the pieces and add seam allowances to get the fabric cutting sizes. I would start by piecing the center 9 patch. Then add the 2, 3 bar sections to the 9 patch. Then I would piece the next 2 rows of the bar sections and the trangle/squares and sew them into rows. I would then attach the 2 rows to the center row. You will now have the center section done. I would then piece and add the pieced triangle sections to form the block.

wesing 11-03-2012 07:10 AM

I think you're correct that you need to start in the middle and work out. If you ignore the 4-piece corner triangles, the center of the block is a 9-patch with three types of units. The center is a 9-patch, the corners are HST, and the remaining units are rail fence.

When you make several of the complete blocks and lay them out, you'll effectively have two different 9-patch blocks alternating and on point. The other 9-patch will be plain squares with white in the center and on the corners, and the blue and red fabric in the remaining four spaces.

I would assemble the quilt with the two different 9-patch blocks, and use setting triangles on the ends of my rows. There are calculators and tutorials to tell you what size to make your setting triangles. If you want to do it exactly like it is drawn here, you can just make the 4-piece corner units with a square, two QSTs and one HST. Either way, you'll have to decide what size you want your block to be; I'd start in the middle again and make the measurements easy for the smallest units first.

Hope this helps,

Darren

P.S. I'd like to see this one going together; would you mind posting progress pics?

thimblebug6000 11-03-2012 07:38 AM

Hopefully someone with EQ7 can help you out, it's fairly easy to draw on paper, as I quickly did it and all the elements are basic but it's the measurements that you would need to get you cutting.

Here it is worked up as a twelve inch block in EQ7. Let me know if you'd like it resized!

Kitsie 11-03-2012 09:32 AM

Thank you so much! It is a very attractive block and I can see it in many different colorways. Black, white & gray come to mind immediately!

Thank you so much everyone. Yes, I will post progress pictures. I am so glad I found this site! Everyone is so helpful.

Sparkling Lake 11-03-2012 09:38 AM

Thank you Lynda. This is very generous of you! I wanted it to be a 12".

Lynda - you're speedy! Just wanted to share a small quilt with 4 of these blocks. I love the secondary designs coming together in the center.

LyndaOH 11-03-2012 10:46 AM

It is really pretty and there are a lot of possibilities! Turning two of the blocks 1/4 turn would be interesting, as would adding different sashings.

Have fun with it!

Sparkling Lake 11-03-2012 11:06 AM

Wow. That looks great with 4. I really like the secondary patterns it makes too. I am still making sample blocks so I am going to put this on my list for when graduate to lap robes!

Sparkling Lake 11-03-2012 11:08 AM

I started to cut the pieces out already. Can't wait to piece it together. I realized that in one of my blocks I had done the set triangles but didn't have a reference. I went on line and found a tutorial. I am a happy puppy!

Here it is in some fun colors. Can you tell I'm a purple girl?

Sparkling Lake 11-03-2012 03:22 PM

Love the colors! I really like purple too.

LyndaOH that is a very striking purple mock up of a quilt. I can see myself even making it, and maybe soon. Many thanks for using EQ7 to help Sparkling Lake with her problem. I have never seen that block before either.
Thanks again
.

quilting nurse 11-04-2012 05:28 AM

Thank you,I am also going to try my hand at this block.

jitkaau 11-04-2012 05:47 AM

An easy way,for beginners, is to draw it up on grid paper and just remember that you have to add a quarter of an inch to the sides of each piece for seam allowances.

JERRY 11-04-2012 06:58 AM

thanks so much

diamondee 11-04-2012 07:08 AM

It looks like you could break it down a little further as well, it might make it simpler to understand. seeing it as a whole quilt ( I love the purple) with the secondary pattern, I could see a nine patch, then a nine patch using the rail block and Half Square Triangles with the smaller 9 patch in the center. It would be easier than using all the triangles on the edge of each block. Does that make sense to anyone else?

BertieD 11-04-2012 07:49 AM

Cut (4) 3-1/2" Blue/White blocks (Cut two of these in half (Not diagonally) for Blue/White block surrounding center 9-patch)
Cut (4) 3-1/2" Red blocks (Cut two of these in half for Red/White block surrounding center 9-patch)
Cut (2) 3-1/2" Green blocks
Cut (6) 3-1/2" White blocks and cut in half diagonally one time
Cut (1) 3-1/2" block and cut it diagonally twice -- these are the four little corners of main block
Cut (1) 18" 1.5" strip of white for the 9-patch and four surrounding 'sandwich' blocks
The 9-patch center block is made from 1.5" squares - use picture to determine how many of each color

Press, do not 'iron' back and forth to help keep your blocks square. Good luck!

This makes approximately a 15" square block.
2 each 4-1/2" squares green and white (makes 4 3-1/2" HST - 3 inch finished)
2 3-1/2" squares red
2 3-1/2" squares blue
2 5-1/2" white squares cut diagonally twice for setting triangles
2 4" white squares cut once diagonally for corner triangles
2 1-1/2" x 9" strips red
1 1-1/2" x 9" strip white
1 1-1/2" x 4" strip red
2 1-1/2" x 4" strip white
2 1-1/2" x 10" strips blue
1 1-1/2" x 10" strip white

Make blue/white/blue strip set (3-1/2" x 10") Cut two 3-1/2" squares and one 1-1/2" strip for center of 9patch block
Make red/white/red strip set (3-1/2" x 9") Cut two 3-1/2" squares.
Make white/red/white strip set (3-1/2" x 4") Cut two 1-1/2" strips for center 9patch block

JanieH 11-04-2012 09:25 AM

That was a new block to me. Thanks, Sparkling Lake, for asking about it and also thanks to LyndaOH for doing it in EQ and sharing it with us!

Sparkling Lake 11-04-2012 03:00 PM

Hey Everyone. I am almost done! I just have to put the corner triangles on. When I do I will post a picture!

Gerbie 11-04-2012 06:52 PM

How sweet of you, Lynda to use yout EQ7 and set this up for Sparklin Lake. Everyone is always trying to help each other out on this board, that's what makes it so unique.

Drag out your graph paper. It's simple squares, triangles adn strips.

The name is definitely Sonnie's Play House. I used this block in a sampler quilt I made for Sonny, my son-in-law because of the name of the block The fabric I used was deep red, blue, green and gold.. The pattern was included in Quilters Newsletter Magazine Jan-Feb 96. It is a Kansas City Star pattern.

That's fabulous!! I'm BOM chair at my quilt guild and this would make a great BOM. May I use it??? Will definitely share any pics.

Thanks,

Jane

This is a very pretty block. Hope you get it figured out. Have always been good at drafting up the blocks. Took a course at the college--I was always good in math---and they told me I should be a draftsman---draftswoman. If I see a block I like I can draft it up to any size but there are so many beautiful patterns out there that most times I am working from a pattern...theirs or mine.

Sparkling Lake 11-05-2012 02:09 PM

Well I finished my Sonnie's Play House block. I messed up on a couple of the set triangles, as you can tell. But overall I really like it. I don't have much material since I am just starting out but I still like it. I am not sure if the picture was uploaded so if not I will try again.
Thank you everyone for being so helpful!!! I would have not been able to figure it out w/o your help.

Sparkling Lake 11-05-2012 02:42 PM

I can't get my picture to upload. I will have to try later. Sorry.

I finally got this to download. I have a new camera and didn't know how to make the pictures smaller. It was so much fun interacting w/ everyone that I was bummed when I couldn't get it attached. I don't have many choices of material so I used what I had. I do like it even though I didn't think I would. It came out fairly well, I think. I still have to work on triangles on a point but I am getting better at it. Thanks again for all the information and kind words. Glad I was able to contribute a new pattern. This looks great - what a good job you did! You were brave to use stripes; a directional print always complicates things.

Happy to help!
