I inherited some quilt pieces and I have been unable to figure out how to put this quilt together. Any ideas? :hunf:

amma 02-02-2010 11:01 PM

a Scrappy Dresdan Fan?
I think these are appliqued onto a square...if it is what I am thinking. Or else you would have to add triangles and Y seams to square them up into blocks.

jljack 02-02-2010 11:23 PM

Yes, I agree with Amma....add triangles to square it up. They are beautiful blocks...I hope you do make them up into a quilt.

Jois 02-03-2010 01:03 AM

Is there any chance that these pieces were from a finished quilt? It looks like there is batting sticking out around the edges.

Pieces like these should have been sewn onto larger squares which might be hard for you to do now if they have batting underneath already.

Two seconds more thinking: These would make great little bed top pillows. Cut them into circles, sew two together, stuff, and put in a center button. Give a couple back to the previous owners and keep the rest!

what ever they are, they are just beautiful!

marsye 02-03-2010 04:19 AM

I love those!! Show us a picture when you finish it. ;-)

hcarpanini 02-03-2010 04:22 AM

It looks like the Spider Web. Here is a link to one at quiltville.com http://www.quiltville.com/spiderweb.shtml

Ohio Star Quilter 02-03-2010 04:35 AM

It doesn't look like batting. It looks like the string quilts that are constructed on a foundation fabric. I love scrappy quilts. It will look beautiful finished.

Quilt Mom 02-03-2010 06:24 AM

I think I would applique them onto squares and go from there. They are beautiful pieces! I can't wait to see what you do with them.

Barbm 02-03-2010 06:35 AM

I also thought of a spider web. I have some books from the late 70s that have spider web quilts in them.

Oklahoma Suzie 02-03-2010 08:06 AM

They sure are pretty. I love scrappy.

Gramakitten 02-03-2010 01:39 PM

Debbie, they are string quilt blocks. Look at old quilt books and pictures. That will give you many ideas as how to go about the finish process. You have a treasure on your hands. post pictures when you get finished. Good luck. Kathi Thompson

MaryStoaks 02-03-2010 02:22 PM

They look like spiderweb to me. They are such pretty old fabrics. I'd add triangles to make the blocks square.

Baywatch quilter 02-03-2010 03:05 PM

Debbie 54

This is reminiscent of string piecing... done in the thirties and earlier. The were often pieced on newspaper and then put together. In some very old quilts in good condition you can even still see the newspaper foundation.

mrspete 02-03-2010 03:22 PM

Oh megosh! Lovely old pieces. I sure hope you make something to show us. And I know it will be divine. How exciting.

Jingle 02-04-2010 05:53 AM

I think I would go with amma's idea and applique them onto squares of fabrics. It will show them off very well. They will make a beautiful quilt.

madhatter 02-04-2010 06:01 AM

Debbie I would applique them on a backing. Thus not disturbing there originality. Trying to block em up U will actually change them.

buttonhead 02-04-2010 06:12 AM

I agree with some that this is a Spider Web block. There use to be a quilt book in print (Scrap Quilt - strips and spider webs) by Marcia Lasher. It was a "A Quilt in a Day" publication. There are templates for each of the two designs. This is a really fun quilt to piece and put together. Not much problem with squares not being the same because you cut your foundation fabric all the same size. An excellent way to use scraps. :D

Ms Mac 02-04-2010 06:35 AM

Debbie, it looks like someone tried to guess how to make a Dresden Plate pattern, that was all the scraps they had. I own about 1,000 quilt books with all kinds of patterns.
The more I looked at it, that was my guess, try fitting the triangles between the others on another block, or use it as the center of the quilt and keep adding triangles all the way around, and when it's big enough add you border, I go to a lot of yard sales and estate sales looking for books and fabric, and picked up some quilt pieces the other day at an estate sale, some one started and I had never seen the pattern before. I'm going to another one Saturday, I hope this info helps.
Ms Mac :-)

This looks like some of the work I have seen Kaye Woods do. You might find a web site for her. I think these might be stripped piced and then cut into the "triangles".

mycatsmom 02-04-2010 07:00 AM

It looks like a string kaleidoscope. I have seen many different types of blocks called kalidoscope.

lindy 02-04-2010 08:20 AM

Beautiful! What a wonderful way to use up scraps.

lindy 02-04-2010 10:16 AM

Thanks for the link, Harriet. I was going to cut all squares & rectangles, but I think I will try the Spider.

BrendaB 02-04-2010 10:30 AM

How special! I can't wait to see what you decide to do with them.

mudsprite 02-04-2010 11:08 AM

Great call and reference Harriet.

Emjay 02-04-2010 11:58 AM

This reminds me of the 121 pieces of Grandmother's flower garden I inherited. Still looking for inspiration on how best to use them and maximize their value. The fabrics date back to the 30's

Thanks for the link. Trying a spider web quilt will be fun!

I agree about the inherited quilt pieces....applique them onto another block to set off their beauty.

Emjay 02-04-2010 01:42 PM

Thanks for your idea.

Debo 02-04-2010 01:55 PM

They are beautiful. I can't believe the work that went into making them. You are so fortunate to have gotten them.

howard anne baumann 02-04-2010 03:45 PM

I'm not sure what pattern it is. I just wanted to suggest that you could make pillows out of each piece. Or you could applique each piece to a square and sew them together for a quilt. If you don't have very many, then you could make other squares to surround the Pinwheel. You could also cut out triangles and sew them around the edges?? and maybe add on other squares/triangles as you go. kind of like a crazy quilt/log cabin. The pieces are gorgeous and so unique. Good luck.

Carol W 02-04-2010 03:58 PM

Those are great!!

howard anne baumann 02-04-2010 04:03 PM

are you talking about the rag quilts? I have read about them and made a little one for baby dolls, but never a big one.

howard anne baumann 02-04-2010 04:21 PM

Wow, to everyone,
enjoyed talking to you guys. it's interesting how similar we all think. Man, I need to find a quilting group to work with. Maybe when I retire. . .Thanks, Howard

gwena 02-04-2010 04:28 PM

I'm fairly new at quilting so I don't want to give you any advice on what to do with them. They are beautiful and can't wait to see the end result. Good Luck. Send us photos okay?

Boston1954 02-04-2010 04:29 PM

I have never seen it before, but it looks very interesting.

AnnaK 02-04-2010 05:46 PM

Spider web or kaleidoscope? Love the colors.

littlehud 02-04-2010 10:00 PM

Those are beautiful. I can't wait to see what you do.

RedGarnet222 02-04-2010 10:25 PM

I also agree with the spider web, but I have seen one like this called a ferris wheel.

Teresa 54 02-05-2010 05:04 AM

Looks like string quilting to me. They will be hard to set together. My guess is Kalidescope? Make a template of the wedge, get some 1/4" paper and play with it till you get the alternating block to square it off, center and make smaller items with it.

dsj 02-05-2010 06:00 AM

I would have to agree that is a variation of a spiderweb. Those are very sweet blocks and I have to say I just woke up and it is a rainy dreary morning here, as soon as I saw these they brightened by morning. I believe I would have to add a cute (if there is such a thing) a little embroidered spider hiding somewhere in that when you finish it. You are going to finish it, yes?!!!! Have fun with it you lucky girl.
