I wonder has anyone done that? I have it in two colors, which I like. It is a redwork with 9 blocks, triple sashing and nine patch (background of redwork blocks-off white and red fabrics). Not sure what I could add to it to add length and yet fit in. As I say the square just does not appeal to me, but may leave it if too much work. I hope my explanation is ok.

I feel the same, unless it will be used for a wallhanging. That I doubt happens with this one. The migrating geese is nice, but looks like a lot of work, was it? |
I always make my quilts rectangular. It just seems to appeal to me more than a square.

I seldom ever do a square quilt. Sometimes over my mantle but I love rectangles mych better. I add extra rows all the time. Do your own thing! ! !

I'm glad you asked the question and I appreciate all the tips and pix that everyone has offered. I always learn so much here. I'm looking forward you seeing your red work quilt when you've finished it.

For my own queen bed I make all quilts square to finish after quilting in the 95" range and no pillow tuck (don't like the weight when turned down). Being able to turn it any direction means less fading in any one area and it fits the bed which has extra deep mattress perfectly. I know you can buy spray that protects quilts from light damage BUT don't worry about it too much because with 2 quilt-loving cats I have to change them out and wash & dry them frequently. With a few exceptions, they are traditional patterns & finished with a combination of stitch-in-ditch to stabilize and machine meandering, loops and swirls which I do myself. I sometimes make matching pillow cases or toss pillows. Pretty utilitarian and casual actually. I wash & damp dry all fabrics before pressing & sewing and use either cotton or cotton/poly 80/20 batting so shrinking out of shape is never a problem.

Ive done both! Beds are rectangle, if the person is tall the quilt is rectangle to fit. Do what u like theres no rules!!
|
You can make a couple more blocks and put on the end that will be at the head of the bed. With a combination of blocks and borders, it shouldn't be too hard to make it longer.

A flying geese question, I have to go across 50 inches, what size of blocks should I use to start with? Thanks. I like the look of these, I think this might work out.

Baby quilts somehow are almost always square for me but bed and sofa quilts end up being rectangles. Why? I'm square from shoulders to waiste but rectangle from head to toe~!
|
I don't like square quilts because I don't have a square bed. Nor do I like them as throw quilts because even though I'm not a thin person, I am taller than I am wide. Just my own preference of course...
|
I like quilts for myself to be rectangular because I throw one over me at nighttime while I'm watching T.V. and I'm longer than I'm wide (thank God).
|
Mine are mostly rectangles. You can always add another row of blocks or add a "special" top and bottom border with appliques or embroidery before you add the other borders.
|
I like square bed quilts (King size even though bed is queen) and rectangular 'body' quilts!
I also like square baby quilts ... they look pretty spread out on the floor for baby to crawl around on. |
Here is a website that has a technique sheet for making migrating geese. The price with shipping is a bit over $8.

If you are still on the fence about adding borders to make it rectangular - lay the square quilt out someplace - I use my living room floor - and then I take fabric I would be adding as the extra borders and fold it to the proper size and arrange it around the quilt. Live with it for a little while and see what you think. This way it's just a matter of picking it up if you don't like it.
A quilting friend of mine does a lot of "auditioning" when she quilts and I have begun doing it on some projects. Sometimes what we think will work doesn't. |
I have even made the top and bottom borders larger than the side borders to make a rectangle quilt.
It works!! Love the way some of you added to your quilts to make them longer. I like rectangle quilts too. |
I do both. It depends on what size quilt I am making and for what size bed.
|
A lot of older quilts are made square but they didn't have queen size and larger. They also had fancy pillows to display. I have a couple and one in progress (barely) and they're good for TV or something. I have added some end pieces to extend the length a little and that works out well, too. I just finished one that I used 3" leftover strips on the top and bottom and it looks fine.....just seems to blend in.

Here is how I made my square quilt a rectangle. I put my inside border all the way around, then added a 4 inch strip of the outer border to the top and bottom, then added the inner border to that and finished with the outside border. Looks like it is part of the original design.

Hey, I recognize that quilt! It's one of mine!! And, I did make it longer by adding 2"squares in two rows at the top and bottom.
