Do you name your machines
I have mine named after various relatives.. Unfortunately Helen sounds very bad, don't know if it is serious indigestion or bronchitis. Taking her to the shop today.
|
I call mine by their brand names, so their names are "the Juki", "the Bernina", "the Singer 66", "the Singer 301", etc. I would never remember any other names and just don't see the point in renaming them.
My daughter had a car she called "Bradley", but I just don't get 'humanizing' machines. |
I'm with sewbizgirl. If it won't come when I call, then it doesn't get a name.
|
I regularly mix up my daughter's & dog's name, so no for me too. The less I have to remember, the better. But I know many do name their machines.

I named my Gammill longarm Gabby, but I don't know why. I just call my domestic machines by their brand name. I do find that I talk to "Gabby" more than the others, but perhaps because she doesn't always mind as well!
|
I call my Bernina " Bernini" after the artist and my old Singer treadle " old clunky" because she is noisy but a work horse.

I normally don't name them. However, recently a friend and I went in on a previously loved longarm. She said we need to name it. When we batted things around, I thought something revolving around "three of us" ike the three musketeers..... she said...no more like the three stooges. She said...we should call her Mo. Like.....we need to do "mo quiltin'!"
She's been Mo ever since. LOL |
Yes. I do name my machines. I started doing this when I was given a machine that was well loved by her previous owner who passed away. I named the machine after her and then I continued the practice.
2001 Singer machine I named Vesta , because I like the name. Bernina 1530 named Martha, after previous owner. Singer 15 hand crank named Black Beauty. Brother PE770 Embroidery Machine named Myrna, named by my daughter who gave it to me. Janome Horizon 7700 named Magnolia, because she's all white. Singer Featherweight named Katie, because I like the name. Singer One named Bronwyn, because I like the name. I also name my automobiles. |
Yes, I name my machines! After my grandma, previous owners, friends, and the FW my hubby brought home I call Daddy's Girl. He doesn't think that is funny, but I do!
|
My newest machine is a $200 FW. She is my first named machine. Mary Belle, my grandmother's name, Mary the lady who sold her to me and HER mother, Belle. For a name, it's a Win all around. :)
my other machines are: Singer slantomatic, not sure the series, was my grad gift in 1974 (mom had got it used in 1960) this is my main machine, a workhorse. It takes the black "top hat" cams Babylock 3 thread serger, inherited Babylock Grace, purchased used from this quilting board $300 (lots of vibration when sewing, but it surely does some pretty stitches. Newhome or White, given me by a friend, but I think she paid $35. Built in Cam Stack which is locked up, but it sews straight & zigzag quite nicely. Hoover in a cabinet, but the manual is Singer stamped out, with Hoover under it, purchased at estate sale, orig $170, marked to 75% off, a steal at $42.50 Newhome treadle in a cabinet, everything is there but the pitman & the drawers are beat up. Pre 1900 long bobbin, needs lots of TLC, will probably end up as only a shelf machine. |
Yup, I name my machines. There's my Elan 500 that is named Fanny, after my Aunt and my Singer 201 named Ida, in honor of my sister's MIL who left it to me when she passed.

Patrice/cashs_mom, no, the FW is the first one I named. I kind of get a kick out of saying "the hoover" to people & they look around for a vacuum. hehehe
|
Mine are all Berninas and they are all called "Bernie".
|
Normally I don't name them but I have made one exception. My Singer 66 treadle is named after the woman who owned it for almost 70 years.

Mine are all "Sophy"....along with a variety of adjectives...
|
I have a few, and all have names that start with K because, after the first was Kenny the Kenmore and the second (a 15-91) was Kathryn named for my grandmother, I was "on a roll". And I alternate their names from male to female, like hurricanes, as I acquire them.
Kenny (Kenmore) Kathryn (Singer) Kyle ( Brother, computerized, gave to my DIL) Kelly (Janome) Kirk (Brother, mechanical) Kay (because my DH was tired of my hinting around for two years for this Janome 8200 and he finally said "OK" to ANOTHER MACHINE) Kenji (my newest Kenmore, my second Kenmore, very muscular; someone on here suggested the name Kenji because it means "second son" in Japanese) |
In general, no, but a vintage Bernina was left to me recently by a friend who passed away. That machine is named Jane, after her. My other machines are the Juki and the Brother.
|
I have only named two of my machines. My Juki is Brunno and my very old singer that I use for backup is Clara. She hasn't let me down yet.
|
Mine have names but with the exception of my Featherweights they're rather tongue in cheek. My Featherweights are:
The white one is Elsa, the 1951 Centennial is Lily and the 1935 is Isabelle (Izzy). My Bernina was a "divorce gift" to myself so I named her Diva and my Juki is named Nellie because sometimes she gets going so fast my first thought anyway is "Whoa Nellie!" LOL |
i couldn't even think of names for my kids, so i don't name my machines
|
My 401 is Fern after my grandmother. My Singer 2662 is Sadie. no particular reason.
|
Only one of mine that ever got named was The Beast. So cantankerous I set her/him free. Seems I like docile, obedient sewing machines that do what I want, when I want. Haven't ever looked back until now.
|
My vintage machine is named Cordelia because she's my bosom friend. :)

I have four machines (all named) packed away and one out. It is my newest one, very expensive......I named it Baby Brother!
I never had a brother and now I have a Brother, so his name is Baby Brother. He's a sweet machine. Big sister is still learning about him. Edie |
I don't name my machines but I do talk to them..."OK girl lets get to work" " OK lets take a break" All 4 are girls....
|
I did name my featherweight Quinny since my husband bought her for my birthday during the year of our 50th wedding anniversary. I also call the little Disney Brother that I have, my little brother. The rest are the Epic, the "other Viking". Ect. Not names per say, but a method of differentiating them from each other.
|
I have a 99k that I have named "Hattie" after my sister Harriet who passed away 2 years ago 9/14/2014.
|
Yes, They"re my Studio Family

Then I guess I need to take away the cats' names (and the dog's too!) No one comes when I call!!! |
I have two Berninas. The bigger one is Lucy, her little sister is Lavendar. No name for my serger but must get to it.
|
[QUOTE=cashs_mom;7646313]I'm the same. Mine are "the Bernina", "the 301" and the "Rocketeer". We are big car enthusiasts, but we don't name our cars either. However, my husband does have a tag on the key for his 34 Ford that says "Baby" ;)[/QUOTE
My hubby has a 1929 Model A. He just calls her 'the A'. I itch to give her a name! I have named some of my machines. My BabyLock Elizabeth is Lizzy (duh). My Singer 185J is Amy because my cousin Amy gave her to me. She said it didn't work but when I turned her around in her base she worked just fine! Amy said I could keep her! I also have an old Kenmore named Betsy because it had belonged to a lady named Betsy and was given to me by her daughter. Then there are several others that I haven't named. They await new owners. I love cleaning up machines and passing them on to others who want one. |
My husband bought me my Bernina so I call him BOB One
