Do you name your sewing machine?

I attended a quilt guild workshop last week and referred to my sewing machine by name - her name is Lovely - and the instructor seemed really surprised and it spurred a conversation in the class. Do you name your sewing machine? Do you have a name for other things? Your car? Just wondering if I've gone a little over the edge. . . . BTW, my cars' name is Tux, short for Tuxedo . . . .

Stitchnripper 11-02-2014 08:57 AM

I don't name any of my machines, but, looks like lots do!!

MadQuilter 11-02-2014 09:46 AM

Quilla, Jean, Trudy, and Auntie Em are my machines and Pearl is my car.

Tartan 11-02-2014 10:05 AM

I do....my Bernina is Bernini(after the artist), my treadle is Old Clunky because she makes quite a bit of noise when I sew on her.

elnan 11-02-2014 10:13 AM

I'm not into giving names to tools and inanimate objects. I use names for animals and people. Hmm, should I pull out all my scissors and start naming them? Will they respond when I call? Will I get their names mixed up and cause hurt feelings?

ManiacQuilter2 11-02-2014 10:29 AM

NOPE, I refer to it as my Bernina which is the company that manufactured it.

Cari-in-Oly 11-02-2014 11:13 AM

yep, a few of my machines have names.
Singer 201-2, Elizabeth
Brother FZ2 Pacesetter, Richard
Universal 15 clone, Orphan Annie
Singer FW, Margaret
Brother and Morse twin 15 clones, Thing 1 and Thing 2
my Grands call my embroidery machines Grammas Magic Machines.

well I only have one (at least for now) and I do call mine "Momma" don't know what... I just do :)

HouseDragon 11-02-2014 12:22 PM

Husqvarna 895Q = Sweet Sapphire

1965 Elna Supermatic SU = Old Faithful

Today I do all my quilt sewing on Sweet Sapphire but my Swiss made, all metal Old Faithful is there for heavy duty sewing I don't want near my computerized machine.

Think sail boat cr*p ........ :o

Mine doesn't have a name but I have been known to call it something (not nice) from time to time.

nvb50 11-02-2014 01:45 PM

I don't give any inanimate object a name.

tessagin 11-02-2014 01:50 PM

I have Sadie and Fern and are sometimes referred as members of the male canine species mothers. Not to often but sometimes.

Me either.

quilts4charity 11-02-2014 04:03 PM

Umm let's see....Abby, Myrtle, Little Girl, Juke, Big Green, Little Green, Betsy, yep guess that would be naming them... (a few are just the Singers, sergers, and embroidery machines, they don't have names)..LOL

kristakz 11-02-2014 05:57 PM

I have never named a machine before (of any type - oh, except Rover, my Roomba vacuum). But for some reason the Bernina that just came home with me a couple of weeks ago became Bernie immediately. Not very creative, am I?

Me either. I've never understood why people do that. Plus there's the confusion factor when you are in a conversation with someone else and refer to a machine by a name other than the brand name, as the OP brought up.

justflyingin 11-03-2014 03:12 AM

We don't name "things"--with one exception--we do call our "Garmin" by a name, but as a joke, since "she" is always telling us where to go/which way to turn.

Gypsyjane127 05-21-2016 04:17 PM

Oh, yeah! My Juki f600 is Juju, my Juki 2010q is Trixie Belle, my Singer 201 is My Sharona, and the 15 Japanese clone we picked up today was just named Cloe. I named my plants, too. LOL!

bakermom 05-21-2016 04:34 PM

No unless you want to call "new machine", "old machine" names

lynnie 05-21-2016 05:08 PM

my FW is named Aunt Betty Lou after my next door neighbor who inspired me and taught me hand sewing at the age of 3 or 4. she had me sew buttons to fabric and i could keep any one i sewed down.

nanacc 05-21-2016 05:18 PM

Gale...
Exactly what I was thinking!

quiltingcandy 05-21-2016 05:19 PM

I have tried but it just does't seem to stick.

Same here.

MissSongbird 05-21-2016 05:24 PM

I have named my latest machine, but I never named any of my machines before that. My new(ish) Janome's name is Gracey Lou Freebush, after Sandra Bullock's pageant character in Miss Congeniality.

carolstickelmaier 05-21-2016 06:54 PM

Not my SM but all my cars/trucks..Betsy 1 and 2, Junie B and currently Lucille.. Next truck if I ever find one I can afford will be Maggie May.

Jane Quilter 05-21-2016 07:48 PM

I have a farm and in my younger years raised cows, horses, pigs and chickens. I was told never to name the animals or you could never eat them. But my children, the little animal tenders that they were, named them. One was "Dotty", the kids favorite pig. I worried and worried, but the day our slaughter pigs came back from the butcher, as we were hauling the packages to the freezer, My 10 year old daughter asked if we could cook some sausage. Sure, so we cooked and hauled and I continued to worry, until I heard a little voice from the kitchen, " Mmm, Mmmm, Dotty you sure taste good". I don't pay a lot of attention to rules anymore. That is why I quilt. LOL

sewbizgirl 05-21-2016 08:27 PM

To me it seems a silly waste of brain cells to name inanimate objects. I can barely keep all my friends' names straight, and their husbands, kids, grandkids, etc. Plenty of names to remember already.

Mimi Sews 05-21-2016 08:42 PM

I have 3 Singer Featherweights named Betty, Bubbles and Maud. I have another old Singer named Robin, but I don't have names for my newer machines. I guess they don't have enough personality for names. ;-)

DOTTYMO 05-21-2016 09:45 PM

That is a lot of undoing and then very tricky resewing. I like the quilt as it is I think the colours match fine on my iPad.

scrapnut 05-21-2016 10:04 PM

One machine is Bessie the other is Betty Sue

DOTTYMO 05-21-2016 10:47 PM

I don't intentionally name my machines. But if I say I'll sew in the dining room my dogs go and lie down by a machine in there. Change name of room and they go there. I do call them unrepeatable names in my head sometimes.

osewme 05-22-2016 06:04 AM

My machine does not have a name. I've never named my vehicles either. My brother named his car years ago....& I'm talking "YEARS AGO"...:) He named it The Green Goose because it was green & he was always honking the horn at friends. Back then you heard more horns honking at friends than as alerts. There was no road rage in the late 50's.

jjs56 05-22-2016 06:26 AM

There are days I have trouble remembering my own name, much less a sewing machine's.

Mdegenhart 05-22-2016 09:02 AM

Naming sewing machines seems as silly to me as men naming their...well, never mind...

I'm in this category

On the other hand I have quite a bit of bling on my machines, and had flames on one just above the needle.
If it makes us happy what else matters?

rryder 05-22-2016 01:42 PM

No, mine are called: The VX560, The PC420, The Featherweight and The PQ1500s when I refer to them. I hope they don't take it personally....

I have a name for all of my vintage machines but not the computerized one's. Especially if the person who owned it previously is someone that I knew, or if the date of manufacture has special significance, it's kind of a tribute to them.

deedum 05-24-2016 03:55 AM

I have "Big momma" my janome 9500, Silvie my Singer 15, Matilda another Singer , then there are the twins Opal and Esther the 301's. Mr T the treadle, and a few others. We have names for our vehicles too, We appreciate it that have served us and keep serving us and find value in naming them I guess.

Doggramma 05-24-2016 09:10 AM

If mine had a name, it would be a bad name since I'm mad at it a lot. We always name our cars.
