Summer is my hand quilting season. I take my PVC quilting loon on the front balcony and I can quilt for hours listening to music. I live on a quiet street at the corner of a very busy street. The music makes me forget the traffic noise.

I can only make quilts and do professional quilting April 16 to Dec 31. (I do tax returns). Since April 16 I have made 6 quilts and quilted them and have quilted 5 quilts for customers. I still have 2 customer quilts and 1 quilt of my own to quilt. I am half way finished piecing one quilt and have 3 cut and ready.

BabyCakes 06-07-2011 04:20 AM

Most of my quilty time is spent from October to April..

I sew and quilt more in the summer because our days are 96 and 97 degrees, sometimes hotter. We tend to go for walks and do more in the mild winter, spring and fall. My sewing room is in the basement, nice and cool with big windows. Messy but comfortable, a good place to spend these hot days.

sewmorethings 06-07-2011 04:38 AM

I sew and quilt more in the summer, i live near Myrtle Beach and there is too much traffic for me to do a lot of running and it is just toooooooooo dang hot during the day to be outside unless at the ocean or near a pool.

mar32428 06-07-2011 04:43 AM

Winter in Florida is cleanup time and getting ready to plant veggies in Feb. Spring is verrrryyyy busy sine I'm a master gardener. The garden clubs and condos want speakers. Summer is too hot to do anything but enjoy the air-conditioning and sew.

bigsister63 06-07-2011 04:44 AM

I have breathing issues so I can not be outside during hot days. Fortunately my house has A/C and the basement is nice and cool and a great place to sew and get out of the heat!

jeanneb52 06-07-2011 04:44 AM

I hate the heat outdoors so it makes no difference to me. I turn the AC up and go at it.

Blinkokr 06-07-2011 04:51 AM

I quilt every day, retired so have lots of time.
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

Zephyr 06-07-2011 04:52 AM

Yes, what else is there to do but be HOT. We are running from 95 to over 100 every day.

suzm 06-07-2011 04:56 AM

As former teaching assistant the summers have been my time to catch up with sewing, quilting etc. However.... look out world, no more school.... I will miss the kiddos

WMUTeach 06-07-2011 05:10 AM

I am quilting MUCH more in the summer. I teach at a university and can adjust my mid-May to mid-August schedule to allow some days at home during the week. I have made three quilt tops in three weeks and quilted and finished a fourth quilt that had been waiting for my attention since ....January. I am just enjoying all the time I have at my machine!

Deborah12687 06-07-2011 05:16 AM

I do some quilting during the summer at home but we do a lot of tent camping and traveling and I don't bring my quilting along. My quilts always smell like smoke from the camp fire and also had a Blue jay that had been eating blue barries drop a load and ended up with a stain on my quilt I was working on. Rather do my quilting at home.

GammaLou 06-07-2011 05:19 AM

Oh heavens no. I can't find near as much time to quilt in the summer and early fall. Between yard and pool work and then the grandkids halloween costume, I get pretty busy. Really look forward to early to mid October when I get more quit time!

Is it only me or does the nice summer days have you outside more than in? At night i am too tired to try to be creative. I hate to wish for a rainy day, but that's the only way to stay inside and sew. Am i the only one????

I laughed when I read this... I work as an RSP aide, plus I tutor before and after school. Somehow I find quite a bit of time to quilt during the school year. (I think it is my de-stressor after working with special needs kids all day.) Last summer, I barely touched the stuff. What's up with that?!?

tntgranny 06-07-2011 05:26 AM

I quilt more in the summer - school's out and my job is not as pressure-filled and I can take more time off.

quiltingaz 06-07-2011 05:30 AM

I probably quilt more in the summer. It is too HOT to spend much time outside then. And there is more going on here in the winter. It is a ghost town in my neighborhood right now as all the snowbirds have gone.

We have been lucky this spring as it has been cooler than normal but they predict a very hot summer.

gramacheri 06-07-2011 05:35 AM

I think I quilt the same in the winter and in the summer. Winter time is dark earlier but I have good lighting but in the summer it is my way of keeping out of the sun and heat and humidity. I do not like summer!

nab 06-07-2011 05:48 AM

I hate the heat of summer. We have had two days of 80 degree weather and that is enough summer for me. If it would stay in the 70's I would be fine. I do quilt year around. My sewing room is in the basement so it stays cool. Like gramacheri says "I do not like summer".

LoriMcc 06-07-2011 05:53 AM

ditto

nycquilter 06-07-2011 05:53 AM

there are summer days when I really would love some rain. Otherwise, I tend not to have the time to be in my sewing room. I have begun to do handwork by the pool, and still do so on the commute to and from work. But mostly, not as much quilting as in the non-summer months.

jad1044 06-07-2011 05:55 AM

I quilt when it is too hot to work outside - but work outdoors as needed also - I plan to get much more done this summer than ever though. My workload is less, and so I'm going to begin enjoying my hobby! Finally! Retiring for the second time, gradually.

Marge L. 06-07-2011 05:56 AM

mhansen6 06-07-2011 06:04 AM

So far this year I have been spending a lot of time in the sewing room. The weather has been awful. But when it clears up and is sunny I won't be in there. To many other things to do.

clsurz 06-07-2011 06:09 AM

There is no such thing as nice summer days here with temperatures in high 90's to 110 degrees and heat index even higher. So I stay in the house and play with all my toys....from die-cutters, screen printer, sewing machines, embrodery machine and more.

Last week it was in the mid to high 90's and felt like 100 and past weekend it hit 100 and felt like 105.

Today I hope it's no more than low 90's and even high 80's would be nice but I doubt it will be that.

As for yard work I have a man employed to take care of this for hubby and I. He comes twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter months.

Blinkokr 06-07-2011 06:17 AM

I am with you on having someone do the yard work. Hubby and I are to old to be out in that heat here in Florida. 2 years in a row we had neighbors, the man next door the first year die from going out there at 2 in the afternoon and the next year the lady across the street did the same thing, she was out doing the yard work and I saw her drop over and ran and gave her mouth to mouth and got her back. The 2nd time was about 2 months later and she didn't make it.
Be careful out there Ladies and Gents in the heat of the summer.
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

roadrunr 06-07-2011 06:22 AM

Since I mostly do hand quitling, I quilt more in the winter than in the summer - it's just too hot to have a quilt on my lap in the summer. However, I am currently working on some charity baby quilts and they are being quilted on the machine.

Tudey 06-07-2011 06:22 AM

I don't like the heat, therefore, I hang out in the air conditioned house where my sewing room is. Additionally, I have a piece of black velvet up over the western facing window of said room to block out the afternoon sun, which can make that room unbearable. I can sew to my heart's content. So, yes, I quilt as much in the summer as I do at any other time of year! (sometimes MORE)

Dawnmarieodya 06-07-2011 07:04 AM

I quilt year round but I go to a quilt shop every thursday to quilt with other lady's because I know no one else here in town.Just moved here 2010.Hubby has PTSD so hes in the house most of the time.We bought a home with a pool so he could swim.Quiltiny has become my santuarey excause the spelling. We quilt from 10:00am till 5:00pm for $5.oo.I have met quite a few friends. Most are snow birds so dont see them all year.Had our son and family here for 5months so had no time to sew but Praise God they finally bought a home and moved 2weeks ago.3grandsons and a girl.Fight all the time not used to it.Lots of stress.Kept me busy Ill tell ya.I have two larg lap quilts to finish. Then I can make me stuff for house and start Christmas gifts.Yes I said that nauthy word this soon but I have several quilt door kits to make.Wish me luck.

klgreene 06-07-2011 07:09 AM

I quilt more in the summer than I actually do in the winter, I am one of those 1% people who gets depressed in the summer because of the sun and heat, so I stay inside in the air conditioning, and quilt.

quilting in my60s 06-07-2011 07:14 AM

I quilt less in the summer because of garden and other yard work but when it gets to be near 90 degrees (no humidity) then I come in and work on my many WIP's. I love the longer days and I like to quilt when I have natural daylight. I do have an Ott light over my machine and am working on better lighting in sewing room for this next winter. In the winter I try for 3 projects per month to get caught up. Those are UFO's and I do redwork embroidery. In the summer while I watch the Mariners I do my embroidery work.

Jersey Gal 06-07-2011 07:24 AM

I take a vacation from quilting, and read during the summer months.

Becka 06-07-2011 08:37 AM

More in winter than summer. I'm a single mom, so nothing gets done unless I do it, and some of it HAS to get done :) But I love my yardwork/landscaping and DIY projects as well, and can still sew/quilt in the evenings after homework. I use it to reward myself.

hudgoddess 06-07-2011 08:40 AM

I live in the desert, and my seasonal job is really slow in the summer. I quilt way more in the summer. I just bought a bolt of flannel and am starting on chenille rugs for Christmas gifts today!

Jammin' Jane 06-07-2011 08:41 AM

Summer is so short in Minnesota, so I have to take advantage of the beautiful weather! Rainy days make me change my mind, though!

teacherbailey 06-07-2011 08:45 AM

I'm another school system person, like several who responded. Like them, I do more in summer since I have longer blocks of time to work on it all....

serenitybygrace 06-07-2011 09:09 AM

In winter, often it is too cold to be outdoors, in summer, often it is too hot to be outdoors. I just take it as it comes. Quilting gets squeezed in between running errands, friends, and computer (reading this board - ha, ha,)and getting a sewing machine to work properly. I took my "best" machine to get cleaned and lubricated yesterday. Hopefully, I will have no more sewing machine problems for quite a while.
