I am retired and quilt just as much in summer as I do in winter - mostly because my house is air condidtioned.

crafterrn1 06-07-2011 10:25 AM

[ I hate to wish for a rainy day, but that's the only way to stay inside and sew. Am i the only one????]
I quilt all year round. I always have something to do! That being said I am thinking like you. We have a huge kitchen renovation starting and my sewing time has decreased already! I know I will not get anything done but I will start again after I have a great new kitchen!

Springtime on StL is nice so I'm out getting the yard ready for summer. We've been under a heat advisory since Sat - the heat actually gives me time to quilt, and I mean quilt tops that have been sitting for some time now.

I only quilt during nice weather, cold weather depresses me and I really don't like being cold, so my winter sewing is very limited only if I really need to get something done.

Qwiltylady 06-07-2011 12:11 PM

I have a machine that I set up out on the patio and can enjoy the nice summer weather and sew at the same time. The patio is a great place to lay out blocks.

montanajan 06-07-2011 12:32 PM

No - more time in the garden & doing outdoor activities.
Montana winters lend themselves to indoor projects like quilting.

Isn't it amazing we all have different likes/dislikes with our weather. After living on both sides of the Cascade mountains, I will take eastern WA anytime over western WA. Love the hot dry weather, but then again I do have air conditioning if it gets too hot for me!

cassiemae 06-07-2011 12:35 PM

I tend to quilt more in the winter but I always manage to start on a quilt sometime during the summer months that way I am on my way for when the winter goes nuts.
HAPPY QUILTING :-) :-)

What a great idea! If I can get a non windy day, I will try laying out my blocks outside.

Juliebelle 06-07-2011 12:42 PM

I find that I do not do as much in the summer, between the yard work, flowers, vegetable garden and pool I spend a lot more time outside. I have not been in mine in about a month, but it is waiting for me when I am ready.

Kappy 06-07-2011 12:43 PM

It' summer in Minnesota, it doesn't last long, so get outside as much as possible, I was thinking of setting a portable table up outside and doing some sewing and then I remembered the mesquitoes! LOL

Ripped on Scotch 06-07-2011 12:48 PM

I'm hoping to set a goal of 4 hours a week during the summer. I have a lot of UFO's and I want to get them finished up. Plus my guild is having a quilt show next spring so I need to work on some things for that.

Sew and Sew 2 06-07-2011 12:52 PM

As hot as it has been here, I spend a lot of time inside trying to stay cool. No rain in sight just hot temps and high humidity.

Lyncat 06-07-2011 01:28 PM

I'm a teacher too, and it's hot where I live so I do more quilting and sewing in the summer. Well, our pool is almost finished so I may be spending a little more time outside this summer.

Laura3 06-07-2011 01:46 PM

I usually do small projects such as bags...I am on a bag kick this summer. Its easier to start and stop!!

elseebee 06-07-2011 01:54 PM

I spend a lot of time outside in the summer, but my sewing room is in the basement, and therefore the coolest spot in the house, so when I'm inside, that's where I head to!

purplefiend 06-07-2011 03:10 PM

I sew and quilt more in the Summer as its too danged hot to be outside for very long in central Texas. Its still Spring and already we've had temperatures of 100+ and broken many heat records.
Sharon W. in Texas

Murphy 06-07-2011 04:16 PM

I quilt all year around. I love gardening so take time for that and spending time with friends.

g-maquilts 06-07-2011 04:38 PM

It doesn't change much for me except maybe more sewing in the summer. I don't like the heat and I have hay fever.

GrannyHanaDa 06-07-2011 04:59 PM

I stitch the same amount all year.
I would have withdrawl if I didn't.

mouseface 06-07-2011 05:03 PM

I do moe in the winter i live in minnesota so i like to enjoy the most of summer when we have it the winters are long enough i just work on small projects in the summer things that dont take to long to finish

dlong 06-07-2011 05:34 PM

After dark?????? Stays light outside here in Texas until after 9:30. LOL

G'ma Kay 06-07-2011 05:41 PM

My husband and I grow two acres of wine grapes. The only time I get to quilt is when we have rain for a few days in a row. Otherwise from October to March it is my favorite pastime.

Nettie Phillips 06-07-2011 06:14 PM

No, you are not the only one. I am outside most of the time in
the summer so I get very little done on quilts or anything else
as far as that goes. I am still trying to get my pinwheel top done.
I know I am late. Oh, well. I just have the borders to put on so
am hoping that will get done soon.

Lucy90 06-07-2011 06:24 PM

Living in northern MN I get out and enjoy our summers so I don't quilt as much. I have a garden and flowers and just enjoy! The cold weather comes way to fast.

jhoward 06-07-2011 06:24 PM

I move my sewing machine to the deck to sew. I love to sew outside.

sewmom 06-07-2011 06:39 PM

My sewing area in Midland is upstairs and it gets really hot in there. So I might not be up there when it's really hot unless I have to finish something. In Cheboygan it's cooler at the lake so I will quilt in the evenings. I always have a project or two going up there.

I do too. Mainly because it's too darn HOT to do anything but stay in the ac and not run the risk of dying from heat exhaustion! Unless you're at the beach or in the pool, there's nothing to do but stay inside. I get too sunburned to be able to stay outside very long, so I stay in and quilt.
In the winter it's hard to make myself stay inside and do anything. It's so much nicer out. It all depends on where you live, doesn't it?

8-)

grammysharon 06-07-2011 07:09 PM

I do piece during the summer and hand applique @ night. If I am FMQing I get up early and work in the morning when it is cool. :D

LivelyLady 06-07-2011 07:14 PM

I quilt year round. In the winter months maybe a little more, but I do so enjoy hand work in the summer months sitting in my flower garden or on the porch.

katigirl 06-07-2011 09:31 PM

piecing and machine quilting yes-hand quilting not so much. unless you can do it in a bathing suit in front of the a/c. lol.

ashlett 06-07-2011 11:16 PM

Yep! Sit in the garden and hand sew or quilt.

cbjlinda 06-08-2011 02:23 AM

Me too" once summer hits I am out of school and get into yard work ect. I still try and do some sewing but I don't always get as much done as I like too.

mayday 06-08-2011 02:24 AM

no, definately not ,too much to do and quilts are hot on you when working.

justlooking 06-08-2011 02:31 AM

I like to spend time outdoors in the summer, of course, if the weather is bad, that's a different story. Sometimes I work on quilt tops in the summer and then quilt them in the winter.

christinetindell 06-08-2011 03:51 AM

Getting ready for daughter's wedding here and I have not sewn in weeks, maybe a couple of months. The heat is so bad here that by early evening we are all exhausted and that time is when I would have spent on my machine, but just too wilty.

Gramma 06-08-2011 04:36 AM

Too Hot & HUMID here to go out in the summer. Husband has breathing problems.

Joan Gaddis 06-08-2011 10:43 AM

i try to quilt as much in the summer as i do ahy other time......
but gardening, canning and revival, and vacation bible school have to fit in my summers, also. so no i don't do as much in summer!!!!!!!!!!!!

CarolLady 06-08-2011 02:06 PM

I quilt less in the summer (unless something changes)
