I try to sneak down to my sewing room in the basement for an hour a day, usually in the afternoon or evening. I always have several projects at various stages going on at once. Right now I have one I am cutting, one on the frame to machine quilt and another I am hand quilting (which I can do while I watch TV with the family). If the kids don't have sports on Saturday or Sunday, I will spend about half the day sewing!

MistyMarie 03-25-2010 04:42 AM

I end up getting sewing time after dinner and usually after my kids are in bed. By then, I have picked up the house (as much as I feel like after a busy day at work), cleaned up from dinner, and have spent time with the kids. I always feel too guilty heading back to my sewing room when I haven't finished all the tasks around the house I need to. I also have kids in Taekwondo, which takes up about two hours an evening. So, I quilt for about an hour or two.

I quilt mostly in the daytime but I also have a shoebox of quilting hand work that I do while watching tv with DH. I need to have my hands busy all the time or I would go up the wall.

Hi, Mary Alice
I can't believe that someone on this board has the same name as I do. This post re: quilting in the basement sure isn't me but signed with my name. Should I be getting a pseudonym or something?

I quilt afternoons, slow to become fully alert in a.m. (lazy)

Jingle 03-25-2010 05:06 AM

I work during the day, I try to cut or piece in the evening or quilt if I have one ready. I usually always sew on the weekends while I'm doing laundry, cleaning, etc. I only get a couple of hours in the evenings as I share my sewing room with 4 cats and they want to go to bed at 8PM and will just stay in there until I get the hint and leave.
I am retiring in June and will get more time to quilt when I want. DH is still working and does not plan to retire. I usually cook pot dishes on Sundays and we eat leftovers in the evenings, or maybe nothing.

maryjoan 03-25-2010 05:24 AM

I work part time and quilt mostly evenings and weekends. I've done a lot of "stitching" and "pinning" during commercials. LOL

ceegee 03-25-2010 05:31 AM

I sew in the daytime and embroider and embellish at night

Since I'm disabled I can quilt whenever but I do tend to sew more in evening and late into the night. DH works a second job and is gone over night so I can sew as I wish!!

Old Owl Gray 03-25-2010 06:06 AM

We shut the ringers off when we nap. Do not get much done after dinner without a nap.

quiltingruthie 03-25-2010 06:10 AM

I quilt whenever day, afternoon, night. I'm retired. :)

kbwoody 03-25-2010 06:25 AM

I've started a bargello also. Its my first one. I love thinking it through, changing the layout, and today, hopefully, sewing it together. It is just a table topper. I sew 2 to 3 hours most days anytime of day I can.

Justok 03-25-2010 06:57 AM

I'm retired also, but I have to do my housework in the morning otherwise it won't get done. I like to quilt when my jobs are done and I don't have to worry about anything. Since I found this quilting forum, I don't get as much quilting in, cause you wonderful people are so darn interesting and informative, I am addicted to you.I have found I spend more money on quilting because of all the techniques and toys you share. But I'm not complaining I am so much more complete. Thanks to all.

LINANN 03-25-2010 07:00 AM

I work full time. I quilt early evening and on weekends wnenever I can. I don't mind to much when it is raining. Then I do not feel so bad about not being outside.

If I sewed after my husband went to bed, I'd lose track of time and stay up all night. I stick to daytime before dinner. After that . . . couch potato time.

paintedquilt 03-25-2010 07:06 AM

I sew during the day, usually in the afternoon. After supper, my eyes just don't co-operate.

tmg 03-25-2010 07:11 AM

locoruner 03-25-2010 09:38 AM

I quilt mostly in the evenings or weekends as I work outside the home. My most consistant time is Sunday Evenings as my husband is a pastor and on Sunday evenings he leads the College service. I stay home and sew!!!

Hi, Craftybear, I am new to the Quilter's Msg Bd and have been reading the threads and came across yours and thought I would offer my views. I quilt a lot! I am 70 years old and have been sewing for 60 years and quilting for 5 years. I have completed many quilts and have many tops unquilted and many UFOs. I like to get up early and am at the sewing machine by 7:00 am many mornings. I don't quilt at night because I just can't seem to get the lighting good enough. One of my machines is in front of a window so I get good natural light. The Juki is almost directly under an overhead light. I would quilt at night if I could see better. I also have a big screen TV and my computer in my sewing room/den. I haven't learned to paperpiece yet. Going to learn soon. I love to do raw edge fusible applique and make my own patterns. Hope this isn't to long will look for more threads from you. Keep Quilting.

dljennings 03-25-2010 02:28 PM

i leave for work @ 6 am, usually not home until 530-600 pm, then its grandbabies time...

i usually try to get at least sunday afternoon in my studio (fancy phrase for sewing room), but the spring cleanup in my gardens is coming..then for a few weeks i don't get much done.

some weekends i pray for rain!

I quilt at every opportunity and time of day doesn't matter. When I get a quilt sandwiched and ready and it's bed time, too bad. I have to quilt a minimum of one hour no matter how tired I'm before being able to settle down and sleeping. Now I can ONLY hand quilt that late at night. If I'm doing machine work, I don't dare do it that late as I'd never settle down to go to sleep. I know because I've seen the sun rise while in that frenzy. LOL. I machine piece in my computer/sewing/craft room but hand quilt in my love seat recliner in the living room with the good TV. I do have a nice TV in my sewing room too as I do enjoy having it on while I work. I have an Ott floor lamp by my sewing machine and another out in the living room behind my love seat. After doing without I told my husband I had to have them - older eyes evidently.

yourstrulyquilts 03-25-2010 03:19 PM

Mostly at night after everyone has gone to bed. I'm one of those "night owls". But if I get a chance, I'll quilt whenever. I was just cutting out some stuff to sew on later.

I usually machine sew during the day while dh is at work and hand work in the evening so I can be downstairs with him... if he's busy or away - I'll sew anytime.
