Some I do and some I don't. It is according if it is for someone who will really appreciate it or for someone who may not even look twice at it.

Like the feel of batting and love to hand quilt a little runner.

It is an absolute joy to use and the skirt did not need to be quilted at all as a result. i would certainly use this for table runners in future and probably would not use any backing fabric either. |
In the past I have used fleece or runners or table toppers. Just gives the project a little body.

I have always used flannel or felt for my table runners.

Sometimes I use batting and sometimes not. I like the cheap fleece throws (about $2.00 each) They make really nice batting for table runners and candle mats. You can get quite a few out of one throw.

I use flannel - always wash it first bacause it may shrink.
