If so, what kind and where do I find them?
Shout, found in the detergent aisle at the grocery store.
Most fabric stores carry them and yes, I use them for any quilt that may have fabrics that will still bleed a little and I give some with every quilt I give away. Someone once told me that a square of 100 percent cotton will do the same thing. Have yet to try it.
Yes! I actually buy mine at the Navy Commissary where I do most of my grocery shopping.
I didn't use them until I heard about them on this forum. I found them at Wally's and now use them always. I wash my quilts when they are finished and I want to know if the colors are going to run. This group is the best for information.
I always use them if I think that there might be fabric dyes running. I also include a box with any quilting project that I give as a gift. Unfortunatley I haven't found them up here so I make a trip to WalMart in Ogdensburg when my supply runs low.
I use them occasionally in my laundry if I am unsure if something will bleed color. I use one everytime I wash a quilt. I don't want to take a chance of ruining all the hard work.
I find them with the laundry supplies at the grocery store and Walmart. |
Yep, every time :D:D:D It is much less expensive that having a ruined quilt
Are they called dye catchers? Is there any particular brand.

Thanks Katie 825, I will look for them.
I also use the Shout brand -- I get mine in WallyWorld next to the laundry detergents.
I use them when I'm washing fabric the first time -- especially darks or reds... |
walmart has some.
I use them, and taught my DD to use them when doing her laundry. She doesn't sort things!
I don't know if it's still around but there was one called a dye catcher. Did the same thing as the color catcher. Love them esp if DH does the laundry. He doesn't sort as well as he could or should.

I always use one when I wash my quilts for the first time. I just get the Shout brand ones. They are usually right by the laundry detergent.
Same I use shout color catchers as well. Every time.
Umm...where do you get your groceries?
Me too, except mine come from Wal-mart. We don't have a grocery store anymore.[/quote] |
Well thanks everyone one! And what a good Idea to give them with a quilt as part of gift...! So another question? Do you wash quilts before you give them away?
Thanks everyone! As usual you're all the best ;)

Yep. Shout Color Catchers at my local grocery store or at Walmart. Works for me
I have been using the Shout sheets in the washer ever since they came out with them. They really work. They can be found in the laundry section of your grocery store etc.

Hancocks fabric store has a product I use for dye catchig. can be used over & over. I trust it
I was thrilled when the grocery store started caring Shout color catchers. Not only do they save the day with my quilting fabrics, but my sons wouldn't have had to wear pink football uniforms if they had been discovered earlier. They are quick to remind me to put one in the washer.

Hi Mic-Pa. I am originally from Wilm. Delaware and then moved to York,Pa. I now live in Florida.Nice to hear from some one from my neck of the woods.

Hi Polly-13. Ditto. I use Wal-Mart also. Shout catchers are great for all my wash. What did we do before they were invented? They are relatively inexpensive too.

Shout color catcher sheets....love them! I even put them to the test when I bought a red and white quilt kit; and I washed all the fabrics together. The gal who owns AbbiMays, where I bought the kit, was so impressed she asked for permission to post my results on her blog.

Retayne the first time out, every time. i get at Pearl Art Supply or Dharma online.

White vinegar will do the same as a dye catcher. It will keep any running colors from being absorbed by the other fabrics and it will also help "set" the colors.
Just pour some into your wash load. I tend to wash my new fabric together, not with my clothes, so if I have a big load I use a couple cups of vinegar, a smaller load I use less. It all gets washed out so your fabric doesn't smell like vinegar when it's done. Before color catcher, white vinegar was what people used. |
Hey y'all; I just found a new product on the laundry aisle today. Brand name is "Carbona" and it's a dye grabber. It's good for 30 washes provided it's not dried in the dryer between washes. They also recommend a smaller load so it can circulate freely. It's a terry cloth piece of fabric. They also sell regular (1 wash) color catchers but I bought both b/c I intend to use the dye grabber for jsut fabrics and/or quilts. It was relatively inexpensive considering you get 30 washed before its effectivenss diminshes. It's also good for catching grime according to the box.

Congrats Mamaw, you have been published !

I use Color Catcher from Walmart. It is with the laundry detergent & fabric softners.
I also use the shout color catchers when I prewash my fabrics. I was shocked how much some of the fabrics bleed.
Also I even wash my fat quarters. I use those knit zipper bags that you use for fine fabrics undies etc. It's great because they don't all tangle up in knots. I use the color catchers in almost every load of wash since a long time ago I turned my husbands underware Pink. He wasn't to happy. Also if you can hang your fabric on a clothes line to dry it is alot easier to iron. Kathy kjym |
I got sold on Shout Color Catcher cloths when I worked at Target and had to wear red and khaki. Not wanting to always have to wash everything separately, I used them and never had a problem. Now I use them especially when I wash reds, dark blues, dark any color before putting in a quilt. They are wonderful.
I used them a lot when I had a top-loading washing machine, but now I have a front-loader and they seem to lodge themselves under the window, in the seal, so I'm not sure if they are really doing any good.
I wash my quilts before gifting as I love that crinkly vintage look and I have dogs and cats. I love the Shout color catchers and I use several when I wash a quilt. I did use the cloth carbona one, but like the Shout better. I have heard that muslin will do the same thing.
