I bought one over a year ago and I use it all the time. Saves me time , when I start a new quilt a wind about 4 bobbins, I love it.

watterstide 11-03-2010 03:07 AM

i used a coupn and bought one for my friend for Christmas, when they first came out. she didn't think it did a good job. maybe they have improved.
i have a 6600, and don't think i need one. i can wind while i am sewing.
i do love the janome prewounds though..it seems like the thread in the bobbin last a long time.
i wonder what thread janome uses for these?

Mary O 11-03-2010 03:10 AM

I would like one but the price seems too high for me so I just make sure I have plenty of bobbins filled.

I have had one for about two years now and love it! I fill up the bobbins, put them in a plastic prescription bottle (fits perfectly) and am ready to do a quilt. I also have prescription bottle that I put the empty bobbins in and when it is full, I just take a breather and refill the bobbins. As I was told when it was demonstrated to me, put the batteries in it, but use the plug. It puts a little weight on the the Sidewinder. I would love one as a gift, if I didn't have one. I have had no trouble or problems with it. Also, if you change your mind, another fantastic gift (from JoAnn's with the 40-50% off coupon) is the Quilter's FabriCalc. I can figure everything out from the amount of fabric I need for the top, how many blocks, how big of the blocks, how much batting, how much sashing, border, and backing all in one swelled foop or is that felled swoop!!!! Two great gifts.

If I put my index finger under the winding bobbin, I can get it to wind up straight (can't explain right, but I know what I mean), so the bobbin thread isn't all wonky!

What would life be like if we didn't have a new gadget now and again. Even a magnetic telescoping wand that picks up my pins off of the floor is super - got that at Harbor Freight for a dollar, I think! Edie

I just don't get it. Why buy something you already have, a bobbin winder on your machine? I wind several bobbins of thread before I ever start sewing my project. I have Viking machines, and my dealer told me those bobbins won't work on the bobbin winder machines anyway. But I just don't understand why anyone would need one. My machines do a great job of winding and fast.

Auntie 11-03-2010 03:58 AM

It didn't work for my Viking.

I have one because I can rewind and sew at the same time. My machine does not do that. And, mostly, it is wear and tear on the sewing machine and something that I'd rather not use anyhow. It is so much faster this way, the grandkids can help, (if they like), I can take a breather and wind thread. In the long run it is faster to wind ten-twelve bobbins on the Sidewinder (at one time) than to take the time out to rewind a bobbin on the sewing machine. I guess it is a matter of what a person is comfortable with. I like that little Sidewinder, it works, it saves me time, I am saving wear and tear on my machine (maybe), and it's my party! My quilt - my rules. That's what makes it so much fun! Edie

Linda1 11-03-2010 04:12 AM

I use mine all the time. I wind several at a time.

steelecg 11-03-2010 04:12 AM

I use mine because it is easy.

Short an Sweet 11-03-2010 04:15 AM

I love mine, it didn't work for me the first time I used it, but then I read the directions and it worked great. I have a Kenmore and a Brother, they each use a different bobbin and it works great for both. I like mine so well that when I found it at Walmart on the clearance aisle (they were doing their rest) I bought a second for back up lol

adudek 11-03-2010 04:15 AM

Love Mine use it all the time.

pieces 11-03-2010 04:23 AM

Not familar with them because with my Bernina you can load a bobbin without unthreading the machine.

patsyo56721 11-03-2010 04:37 AM

Michelle: I have a sidewinder and love it. It is battery or electric. I have even taken mine to class and it has been used by all there. Beware some bobbins do not work on it though. Double check before you buy. I got mine at JoAnn's with my % off coupon.

judi wess 11-03-2010 04:45 AM

OK, how is the side winder different from the better bobbin winder? Does it work in tandem with the machine?

Roxanne 11-03-2010 04:51 AM

I have a side winder and use and love it!
I wanted one for along time and got one with a 50% off coupon at Joanns.

Wear and tear; that's ridiculous! That's what sewing machines are made for, use. What difference does it make if you are wearing out your sewing machine or some fancy box you paid too much for to wind bobbins? I still just don't get you people. You are talking about winding a bunch of bobbins with the sidewinder; you can wind a bunch of bobbins ahead with your sewing machine, and save the money you spent on the sidewinder, to buy fabric.

dgmoby 11-03-2010 05:15 AM

No, I don't have one...but I do have an industrial bobbin winder that I use for my longarm. It works fabulously fast :)

Riversong 11-03-2010 05:35 AM

I was given one 3 years ago and have used the dickens out of it. My little granddaughter(4) has learned to use it so I let her wind some for me. I love the thing!!! It has both batteries and a little power cord, but the batteries last forever in mine.

mpayne 11-03-2010 05:45 AM

I use one all the time. I try to have 2 spools of thread so I can put one on the machine and one on the bobbin machine. I love it/ :)

Murphy 11-03-2010 05:49 AM

I use one all the time and it works great.

sheila bee 11-03-2010 05:55 AM

I have one and i love it.....

Marvlin 11-03-2010 05:59 AM

I bought one because the lady told me it would work with my machine. When I got home, guess what? This did not work with my machine so now I have a bobbin winder that doesn't work at all for me. I have decided to look around and see who has a machine it will work with and give it to them. I've just decided pre-wound bobbins work well for me and if I want the bobbin thread to match the upper thread I just wind my bobbins on my machine. I sure wish the bobbin winder had worked for me because I do a lot of sewing and quilting too.

Debra Mc 11-03-2010 05:59 AM

Get one. They are really neat. I can wind off big cone with stand & send thread right up to it. They really wind nice. I didn't realize there was an issue about what machines it would work with. I have 2 Kenmores & 3 Babylocks & they all wind great.

mcbear46 11-03-2010 06:04 AM

It is on my xmas list....but If I find one at the quilt fest. I just might have to get it for myself.

Can you buy pre-wounds in other than bobbin thread which I'm told is for embroidery only?

Roberta 11-03-2010 06:54 AM

I use one and love it and actually DO use it wind my Singer bobbins. It's a tight fit to get them on the spool but it does work for the Featherweight.

Yes, my lqs sells them.

dkabasketlady 11-03-2010 06:56 AM

Yes, I have one and use it most of the time! Sometimes I forget about it when I need just one bobbin of a special color.

JS 11-03-2010 07:09 AM

I love mine !!!!!

thimblebug6000 11-03-2010 08:02 AM

Maybe the only difference is the brand name between it and the Better Bobbin winder by Dritz. This is an older posting but here's a link to some hints.

I purchased one for my machines, true Jamone needs the fuller bobbins.. but the brother will give you a fit.... I took me all of 3 weeks to figure this out. (slamming my head into the wall didnt work either, wondering if I done something 2 the machine?)
I had purchased a new brother machine at big chain store, tried to use my bobbin winder on the bobbins--no way,(they were way over full for the machine). Brother uses a less is more approach I think? Just letting you know....

JS 11-03-2010 08:15 AM

mine is a bobbin winder

Shemjo 11-03-2010 09:34 AM

I have one, use it all the time to fill many bobbins at a time. Works for my Janome and the FW also.

Use it for my Brother innovis 1250, I never let the bobbin winder stop itself, i just flip the little arm when the thread gets near the edge, NO PROBLEMS ever.

Short an Sweet 11-03-2010 09:58 AM

all I did was a manual stop on the wind when it was where I wanted it

I have had mime for a couple of years. Love it, does all my bobbins. I guess the new winder will do larger spools of thread and all bobbins. Good investment.

between my dds and myself we have 4 Brother machines(UTL down to a PRW4000) have had no trouble with the bobbin winder, the machines take two different style bobbins also

quilt3311 11-03-2010 10:17 AM

I love my bobbin winder. Use it all the time. Haven't seen the new version though. Also have a separate winder for the HQ_16.

Tallulah 11-03-2010 10:41 AM

I haven't read every post, but if you do get one, I think that it works best with the electrical cord. It is a neat little gizzmo. Not a necessity, but handy.
