Yup, it's my husband's job when he is watching tv to wind my bobbins, and no he's mine, nobody can have him. :D
I bought one while still using my Brother. I loved it and could wind as many bobbins as I wanted in no time at all. My Singer, old touch and sew, has the bobbin with the metal pin in the middle so it can wind "in" the machine. My Side Winder will not work on this type bobbin, but if I knew one that did, I would be in my car on the way to buy one.
I like my Side Winder also. Bought it at JoAnn's with a coupon and have it plugged in and sitting next to my machine so I can wind a new bobbin without "unthreading" the machine when I run out with inches to go (after shouting argh!) Works great on my Bernina bobbins. The new one looks even better but I will have to wait until mine breaks to get that one.
I did figure out that u can adjust the tenison of the bobbin winder, and stop it when it looks full it will work with the brother...but come to think of it I cant remember where I put the turkey!!Getting bad with crms here.

I have one which doesn't work with my Designer 1. I was told to load the bobbin upside down and it works in a fashion, but...
I have a side winder and love it. I usually wait till I am down to a couple of threaded bobbins, then fill all my bobbins which number about 25 with different colors of thread, plus several white and black. I saw it at Walmart for 25dollars. I had a birthday coming and asked my husband to purchase one for me. That was three yrs ago. I am still using it. I love it, I will never use my babylock to wind bobbins ever again. Go for it, you will not be sorry.
Yes, I use mine a lot. I have Pfaff and Bernina and it works grest for both type of bobbins. My SW is always out near the machine and ready to work when I want it.

I just got the new Deluxe Sidewinder. It works much better than the original one. I am now using it to wind all my Featherweight and Janome plastic bobbins. It was expensive but it does a great job and it includes spindles that you can change out to wind all kinds of bobbins, including ones for Gammil and Handi-quilter. The list of bobbins includes Viking groups 2,3,4 transparent and Viking green plastic bobbins also, among many others.

Have used the Side Winder since it first came out for all four of my machines. I particularly enjoy it for winding bobbins of hand stitching thread for applique or other hand projects. Mark the bobbin with a notebook hole reinforcement label, so I know what the thread is, and several will fit in a small container to take with me. Can't imagine life without it!
LOVE MINE!!! Couldn't live without it now!
I do have one but sometimes it doesn't always wind my bobbin correctly, it could be user error. I really like the prewound bobbins that I use while putting quilts together, they have so much more thread on one bobbin and it lasts so long. I also have a Bernina 830 that uses the larger bobbins and I have to wind them on the front of my machine.
I just got one and love it!!! I too, hate to run out in the middle of sewing and have to undo the machine, wind a bobbin and then thread the machine again. Saves alot of time and my frustrations aren't running wild.
My Side Winder works great for filling my Janome 7700 bobbins, however, it does NOT do a very good job on the bobbin for my Viking Designer SE; it only fills them a bit past half way. Easy to use and very portable for taking to classes if you are unsure what colors you will need.

All I can say is that I love mine... I can wind a bunch of bobbins at one time and have them ready when I do machine embroidery. I buy prewound a while back but my Janome dealer told me that I should not use them...so I rewind them onto Janome bobbins. One prewound winds on one bobbin...
Very easy... |

Do you use one? Michelle |
Don't waste your money. I have one and have never been able to get it to work properly. Either it gets tangled or it won't windf the bobbin properly making my sewing machine jam.
I have one and love it. So far it seems to take every bobbin I use. I use Singer, Brother and Juki.

I have one and use it for my Bernina but it does not work for my Viking. Use a 40 or 50% off coupon at JoAnn's or someplace like that when you do buy it :)

Great!
I have an old Sears machine, Baby Lock, and my mothers Featherweight. I will try get the Dritz bobbin winder. thanks for the info. |
I have one of the original sidewinders. It didn't seem to wind tight enough so I didn't use it until someone on here said that it would wind tightly when you used the electric and not the battery. They were absolutely right. I now wind up bobbins for my Featherweight in the basic colors I use for piecing and never have to stop while sewing.
I've also been thinking of getting a side winder for my Husqvarna Emerald 118. Can anyone tell me is it compatible with my machine? Thanks in advance for your help.
Which bobbins does it use? The list is of bobbin types not machines. I will try to help if you can tell me which bobbin you use. (I am referring to the question about the Emerald.)

Yes, I have one, and I use it to wind the bobbins for my piecing machine. I use pre-wounds in my BabyLock quilter on the frame. Too much trouble to unhook stuff to wind bobbins on it.
i bought mine from Joann Fabrics it is a pink one that runs either on battery or plug in and i use mine all the time i love it , have not used my machine to wind a bobbin for the last year and 1/2 it sets right next to my machine and thread holder, i did have a problem with the large spools of thread not staying on the spindle but i just set them in the lid of the winder and they jump around while windind the bobbin but no biggy the thread still winds great

I just got a new Sapphire 855 and it winds the bobbins very sloppy. The sidewinder will not work with Viking bobbins. I used it for my Elna but had to turn the bobbin upside-down. It quit working after a few months use. |
I don't think you can get pre-wound bobbins in anything other than embroidery thread. I usually just sit down and wind bobbins until I am worn out before I start quilting. It makes me feel good to look over at my little box and know it is full and just waiting for me to get started. If anyone knows of a bobbin winder that works with the Husqvarna Viking Machines, PLEASE let me know. I have three Vikings and all of them use the plastic bobbins (size L). I think if I could use metal bobbins my winder would have worked. Since I posted the note about gifting my winder to someone a friend of mine came by and asked me what I knew about winders and I told her to take mine home with her and see if it worked for her. I sure hope my winder has a new home that can use her.
They don't work with my Viking Desinger SE, at all! I had to return it.
I love my side winder and use it all the timel.
Those of you that are using the pre-wounds - what weight thread are you using. I have a whole box of the light weight ones that I use in my embroidery machine. Anybody tried using them for regular sewing or are they just too light? |
I use it all the time when I am sewing. I don't have re-thread the needles all the time. It sits on the end of my sewing machine. You can wind up several bobbins and keep on sewing.
I bought one and used it for about a year and then it just died. I want to get another one.
I only use the pre-wounds for embroidery and I believe they are 40 Wt. I have used both the 40 Wt. and the 60 Wt. bobbin threads and the end result always seems to be the same with both. I don't think they would stand up to any other kind of sewing, but it would be worth trying to see what might happen.
use mine off and on - esp when need to rewind a bobbin and don't want to unthread the machine to do it- just hate threading the machine needle - poor eyesight I guess. one machine has a needle threader but it seldom works. have to have needle in just the right position.
A good investment. I love mine. Makes winding bobbins a snap.
