I also like other things--but quilting has kind of taken over lately. But reading, gardening, and computer time are all important.

arimuse 09-27-2011 12:10 PM

I get myself into so much "stuff" it makes my head hurt sometimes - then I just stop and read a book! sharet

MargeD 09-27-2011 12:58 PM

I've done any number of crafts over the years, making my own clothes, general sewing, knitting, crocheting, ceramics, doll clothes, etc., but then I discovered quilting, basically self-taught with a few classes along the way, but the quilting bug bit me and I remain a quilting addict. Even my sister said that quilting was the one thing that stuck.

momto5 09-27-2011 01:50 PM

I,like most everyone else on the Board, have dabbled in other art forms for a long time...but quilting is THE one that has "stuck" and just seems to lend itself to more involvement from me as time goes on. I still surrender occasionally to some other forms of art, but for the most part the sewing machines remain "queen" in this house...all 12 of them!!

YES! love quilting, cross-stitching, made one scrap-book but no more, mainly just because I love stickers! Sewing things like baby burp cloths, receiving blankets, pet blankets, not enough time for it all!

GrannieAnnie 09-27-2011 02:06 PM

Isn't it a shame when we don't read like we used too! I used to read, read, read. Now, I read on this board, then go to work, maybe get in a few minutes to quilt.[/quote]

I can't stay awake to read. If I get quiet, and comfortable, I'm asleep! And I used to read a lot.

I think I was a bad momma when my kids were growing up. I don't like making cookies. I can and I will when necessary, but you'll never catch me making cookies just for the fun of it. Kudos to those who enjoy making cookies (and candy!)

It's now sitting in my living room like a tombstone, (my sanctuary, by the way, far from the TV) and it can't go any further into the house. I have to give away a sofa and if I'm lucky it will just fit the same footprint. Am I interested in weaving? Always was, like so many other things. My life is tooooooooooo short for all my interests.
(My unfinished quilts (4) in the basement sewing room are NOT talking to me right now)

My hubby (bless his pea picking heart) would say that yes I have too may interests. I on the other hand say that No I don't. I want to learn to make Stained glass and a few other things that I am not aware of at this time. ;) ;) ;)

Right now I am spring cleaning. Going through everything to see what I want to keep. I have found homes for some things, only to have people mention they want something that I have that I know I have seen recently in one the boxes. So that is my interest right now.

Silver Shrew 09-27-2011 04:26 PM

I have so many interests that if I retire tomorrow I won't live long enough to do everything I want to do. I'm 64 and a breast cancer survivor of 1 year. May not seem that long, but every day without cancer is a good one. I just want to get all my projects done before I meet my maker. We're also having two grandbabies, one in October and one in March. I have a feeling that our lives will be changing.

brickley 09-27-2011 04:51 PM

sounds familiar I like to do a lot of differnt crafts. I wish I could just settle on one or two, I would get so much more done.

Nettie Phillips 09-27-2011 04:59 PM

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. I just love doing too many things. My
husband says to someone, "She is always doing something."

I love quilting, but I also love painting, reading and many other things. This afternoon I taught a group of seniors to make stitched cards. One of my favorite Erma Bombeck quotes is "When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, "I used everything you gave me."
Have fun with that loom!

katigirl 09-27-2011 08:30 PM

If only we had 48 hour day for all the things we want to do in life. Hopefully we can still have these hobbies in heaven. Imagine eternity to try and do all the crafty things we want to do.

Campbell34 09-27-2011 09:07 PM

I love quilting but get caught up into charity work so I don't get my own quilts made, I do gardening, quilting, genealogy and camping with my husband. Love my quilting guild but seem to not be able to say no to charity projects which throws me behind on my own projects ,Am I stupid or what??? :XD: :XD: :XD:

fred liniger 09-27-2011 09:08 PM

I used to, you name it i done it, hunt, fish, camp, sew, quilt, embrodry by hand, wood work, garden, do all my own mahanic work, bow hunt, chroche, an knit, ride motorcycles. Just to name a few. Became a D.A.V. so that kinda limited me a little. But still breathing and I do whatever I want and can I can't complain. Still alive and married to a beautiful loveing lady. Never to many Hobbie's. Just think...... What do I want to do today. And just DO IT. Go for it. Life is short. We never know When he will knock.

passionforsewing 09-27-2011 11:08 PM

So glad to hear there are others out there just like me. Too many interests and way too many projects "to finish". I have tried to focus on finishing the Christmas gifts I have started. Queen size quilts for 5 people and for me to "try" to focus on this is just about impossible. Always wanting something new to try. Really, I am trying to finish the projects I have set aside and am feeling so much better about everything, am so tired of not finishing things. Always wanting to try "this and that".

justlooking 09-28-2011 02:29 AM

Crochet, Knit, Cardmaking and a few others. I have to really work on finishing a project. I'm quilting a queen size quilt and pieceing a lap quilt. Must make a lap quilt for my husband for Christmas and I make all my Christmas cards I send. Hope some of my hobbies fade. But not quilting.

Kimcatlou 09-28-2011 08:28 AM

I am living in a retirement facility. It amazes me that so many people here say they are bored. Of course I choose too many projects to do myself, but then there are so many activities available here as well.

I do think life is what you make it. I often remind myself that it is better to be overwhelmed with things to complete than to be bored!

dltaylor 09-28-2011 08:52 AM

LOL.. I have the crazy picture in my head of your entire room being taken over by the loom and you are sitting on the couch peeking up over it to see the television>>>LOL

Quilting is such a part of my life,no room/no interest in other stuff.Reading was my 1st love & now,I can hardly find time to read a book. :-D

Isn't it a shame when we don't read like we used too! I used to read, read, read. Now, I read on this board, then go to work, maybe get in a few minutes to quilt.

I solved the reading problem by listening to audio books. If you are computer savvy, you can get audio books downloaded to your mp3 player or ipod. I listen while I sew or I listen to the audio cd's in the car to and from work. It is amazing how many books to can read just going to and from work or even just running errands.

As for the other problem of too many interests...

I was a crafter, gardener, photography student, with many other interests that I can't even remember to list, but when quilting came into my life (circa 1973) that was it. It became really clear to me that I could only afford one major hobby and quilting won hands down.

Digitizingqueen 09-28-2011 10:35 AM

sewing, quilting, scrap booking, card making, music, reading, knitting, photography and of course spending time with my 3 grandsons :-) not too many I just prioritize...

starshine 09-28-2011 10:35 AM

Yes and my full time job gets in the way of them all the time.

nevans-nona 09-28-2011 05:28 PM

Yes, I have too many interests and my husband agrees. Besides my job being an EMT I am the Vice-President of the local emergency squad of which I have belonged for 26 years. I always have been extremely active. My latest project has taken six years, being the new building committee chairperson. I am also the Town Emergency Manager of the Office of Emergency Management. That sometimes takes up a great deal of time. I am on several other town committees. I certainly glad my husband does all the cooking. Plus I have to find time to quilt because I donate quilts for organizations to auction. I always make one for the Doubleday Golf Tournament for my son who was killed in 2005. All proceeds go to his son's college education. He, unfortunately, did not get to meet his son because Nevan was born three months after Dru died.

Sienna's GiGi 09-28-2011 06:25 PM

Running. It is my first love and is equal to my love for quilting. Tennis shoes don't take up as much space as quilting stuff. I'm training for a marathon amd I'm working on a quilt. It's a win-win situation. I'm a slim and healthy quilter.

Deborah12687 09-29-2011 05:08 AM

I have way to many other interests such as quilting, making jewelry, fine art painting, crochet, ceramics, photoraphy, flower arangements, greeting cards, wood working, and gardening. My hubby and I go biking, trail walking, camping on the weekends. During the winter we do mall walking.

JudeWill 09-30-2011 01:01 PM

Yes, I have many interests. There are so many things to do that are so much fun. And there are still loads I haven't tried! But sewing is my passion. It is the one that I always come back to. I just do the otheres occassionaly.

Great Grandma 10-01-2011 10:44 AM

I am wondering how old you have to be before the interest in activities lessens. I am 76 and am always finding something new that sounds interesting. Right now quilting is my "main" passion, but there are so many more. Not enough time so just do other things in spurts. Such as making my own greeting and Christmas cards, rubber stamping, baking, canning, going to grandchildrens h.s. activites, and on and on. Not enough hours in the day. We also enjoy camping and go to Florida in the winter. Also to Colorado for a week in March. Next April going on a cruise with daughter's family. Don't have time to get old!!

montanajan 10-01-2011 10:02 PM

Over the years (really dating myself here) I have done macrame', decopauge', candle-making, some weaving, knitting, crochet, lots of cross stitch (at least 40 pieces given away - none in my home), hooking rugs, sewing clothing, draperies, suits & ties & shirts for hubby, sewed backpacks, purses (sold them for a while), wreaths at Christmas time, many types of ornaments - fabric, clay, painted, etc, made my own cards, reupholstered furniture. cannot forget quilting!
I still have Tennessee Walker horses (expensive hobby), garden (which includes drying, freezing, canning all I can). I have 2 bushels of apples waiting to be made into applesauce & applebutter in the next few days.
I guess I indeed do have too many things I like to do!

I believe each of us is put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of tasks. At this rate, I have so much to do, I should live to be 300!!

This is to Everbtrue, can you elaborate on the cards you make for the military? Would ages 5 through 13 be able to do this?? Joyce (Westpond)

Highmtn 10-02-2011 10:03 PM

Too MANY interests?

You mean... between my love for quilting, hanging out with my grand kids, beach combing with the dogs, cooking, antiquing, baking, stamping, growing orchids, growing African Violets, summer flower gardening and playing on the computer a person can have TOO many interest?? Crud.. I hadn't realized that... Now.. I'm depressed....LOL

I will have to live 10 lifetimes to get everything done that I've set out to do. I can honestly say.. I am NEVER EVER bored! I just wish there were 40 hrs in a day instead of 24.

westpond 10-02-2011 10:06 PM

i'm with you, never enough hours in "my" day!! Too many places to go, things to see, people to "annoy".....
