This is a quilting board but we all relate to the other creative outlets; sewing clothes, making dolls and purses, gardening, baking, painting. We are all so talented. So how do you turn down the offer of a FREE 60" Jack loom?
It's now sitting in my living room like a tombstone, (my sanctuary, by the way, far from the TV) and it can't go any further into the house. I have to give away a sofa and if I'm lucky it will just fit the same footprint. Am I interested in weaving? Always was, like so many other things. My life is tooooooooooo short for all my interests. (My unfinished quilts (4) in the basement sewing room are NOT talking to me right now) MaryKatherine |
I am the same way. Nothing as big as a loom but so many other must have craft items. My hubby says I just like to "experience" different things. Boxes of scrapbooking stuff, totes filled with candle making items, a few closets full of photography necessities, and won't even get started on my baking addiction; which is just as bad as my fabric/quilting addiction.
I love all my hobbies and the older I get the more time I have to devote to them, but yes I have a hard time focusing on just one. |
i have started to cut back on all the other crafts/pass times i've participated over the years- i used to try to learn a new craft every year--knit, crochet, weave, hook, paint, basket weave, ... the list goes on and on...and at times really took up alot of space-time-energy-and funds
over the past 4-5 years i have (tried) to stick with learning a new quilting technique-ya know= paper piecing, applique, ect... but sometimes i do (get tired) of quilting and just want to knit something- or weave something- it's not a bad thing to have lots of interests. nice to have many to choose from- what ever strikes your fancy at the moment :) |

I'm way older than most posters on the board & that's one thing I'm thankful for....other interests have faded away.
Quilting is such a part of my life,no room/no interest in other stuff.Reading was my 1st love & now,I can hardly find time to read a book. :-D |

Nothing like your loom (although I would love that!), but I'm the same way.
In addition to working 50 or more hours a week, I build furniture, garden, write for publication, quilt, a little bit of scrap-booking and stamping, make jewelry, and sew clothes. Quilting and furniture making are the longest running as I started both while in junior high nearly 40 years ago. ETA: Forgot reading! I love to read and fit that in by using audio books on my iPod and listening while driving. |
Wow. I could not have turned it down, but I am a weaver first and quilter second. But if anyone wants to buy a going weaving business, I would sell mine. I have 5 looms and it will take 2000 sq. feet to set them all up. But I get $16.00 per sq. foot to the design industry. This takes a lot of time. I should be out there now. My dear significant other died on July 18 and my heart is not in this anymore.
If you know of a weaver looking for a business, I've had it for 15 years, but am now 65, have them contact me. |
I do have other interests than quilting and find time to do them. I try to multi task, so when I'm running and working out I listen to audio books. Then when I get off work I can quilt.
|
Used to.
Now I only do sewing/quilting, crocheting, and gardening. I cook because I have to eat. |
What are you going to do for yarn? Will you start spinning or can you afford to purchase ready to use yarn? Raw fleece is very cheap around here.
When someone only has one interest as a hobby then I tend to think of them as having an obsessive interest. My interests are varied as yours are. Right now I am sewing Christmas gifts. In the summer I was teaching acrylic painting, last spring I was quilting. |
Altho I love to make quilts, sometimes I need a break. If I have to go with Mom to Drs. appt, I take knitting or crochet. I only make scarfs but it still gives me my 'fiber fix' for the day. I belong to a craft group where someone will teach a beginning class. That person usually has extra supplies & great passion for that craft. We can decide from that if it is something each individual wants to continue. It has saved me slot of $$! Right now it's quilting, making bags for craft shows & making cards for the military. All those will keep me busy for a long time.
|
Crochet used to be my hobby but now I find it boring.
Quilting has so much variety and expense that it has taken over my life. I still read alot also, will never give that up. Im retired so have a lot of time for whatever I want to do. Im single so the hell with house work and cooking, the board is much more fun. I do walk almost every day. |

Maybe...for me, it's more a question of using all my $$ on quilting.Plus I have at least several bags of crocheted afghans, doiles etc.A lot of painted pics, cross stitch everything...a few knitted articles & used to dye fabric. At one time,DH & I were into antiques. My house is filled...no more room.
We have a great library,so I get books there.Too often, they're returned unread.there's no end to interests, just an end to $$ LOL |
I'm also a multi-hobbyist. I've mostly done only the ones involving thread, yarn and fabric. Scrapbooking held my interest for maybe a month. Do like playing with the different colors and shapes of the heavier paper tho - that's kind of like designing quilts! Lately I find myself doing mostly smaller projects that can be completed rather quickly. A great way to try out different ideas without committing myself to a long term project that I discover early on that I don't really get excited about finishing. Glad I only got a small loom when I got bit by the weaving bug. I will finish that sash one of these days! LOL! And that counted cross stitch of the tiger and cubs. And that knitted camo gnome hat for Lori's grandbaby. And the renfaire dress for my daughter. And, and, and. . .
|
I dabble in other crafts too I also love to read! Being diversified is good for the brain!
By the way- I love your oriental picture!!! Is it a quilt?? |
I have too many interests! Rather, I have this problem thinking, "oh, I could do that" rather than buy whatever. I'm trying to get away from that and focus on improving in quilting and knitting. Of course, I still read...have to make time for that!
|
Too many and in fact, cutting 2 out and one down. I'm eliminating most crocheting except for Amigurumi animals and stuff. Everybody has enough afghans. I am finishing two scrapbooks this winter and then selling off nearly all my scrapbooking supplies. In addition, while I am continuing to quilt, I have to severely focus on using stash that I have and not buy more. I need to cut the pile in half over the next 2-3 years. By then, I hope to move back into my own home and I know I won't have the space for all this fabric!
|
Gee this I gotta see LOL ... do you have a photo to share of this 'tombstone'?
I don't have nearly as many hobbies. Most notably is the fabric addiction / quilting and creating fabric postcards. I used to sketch and draw but haven't in years. |

MK My Great Aunt had one yrs. ago when I was young. I wouldn't know were to start. You can't pass up free! Good Luck! |
I was talking to a woman the other day who has NO,NONE, ZILCH, NOTHING as a hobby. She cleans house and she reads.
I though as I was talking to her how horrible my life would be if I had no hobbies. I can't even image. But then maybe I'd be better off is I had only half the hobbies I do have. Nah, wouldn't be fun! |

MK (multi-tasking the furniture!) |
Lucky you!!! I'd love to see pictures. I have a Union 36 and a 4 harness Weaver's Delight.
|
Sorry, I see the pictures now!!! You are going to love weaving.

I have four small children and most of my interests aren't compatible with that (except for photography, which I do A LOT of) ... I have to quilt at nap time or while the older ones are at school, and I used to knit in the evenings until my husband started complaining that I wasn't paying enough attention to the TV (yeah, I know). I go to scrapbooking workshops once or twice a month but at that rate I'll never get caught up. I love cooking, which is probably the only thing I enjoy doing that I actually have to do (right now I'm cooking one meal from every country on Earth, and blogging about it). I love to read but never do, and don't even get me started on those poor horses, who just stand around in the back yard eating hay. Too bad housework isn't on my list of interests or I might do a whole lot more of it!

I too, as many of you, dabble in many different forms of art work. I paint in oil & acrylics, scuplt with polymer clay, work with beads/stones/glass jewelry, create patterns for my stuffed animals made out of old clothing, crayon coloring on fabric for quilts, some knitting, do lace work, tried cross stitching/tatting, read occasionally, love create "dryer lint" art with my hubby for a yearly challenge with local friends but honestly my biggest love is sewing - which includes quilting, clothing, ornaments, household items, baby items, etc... which I sale in local craft shows. Which also allows me the luxury of buying more stuff to continue to create. I love being diversified and find it very stimulating, relaxing and rewarding - life never gets boring for these hands.
|
My main hobby is quilting. Pain in my arms and hands has stopped me from crocheting or crow hooking.
Besides I have too much money invested into quilting. |

Nah, wouldn't be fun! I agree with you! I have a friend that has no hobbies. I have tried to get her interested but no luck. Her & her DH work at the same place and they do put out a small garden. No hobbies would drive me nuts! |

Addictions yes exercise honest, reading, gardening, did knit but budget and time only allows quilting for main hobby, however family is First season of life for grands!

I share my space with a huge Swedish floor loom and rug hooking frames in addition to my sewing machines. I also have so much fabric (wool and cotton}, thread, yarn and books. Cook books and cooking are also my hobby, just made 20# of sauerkraut. Love it all and I just don't worry about it anymore. I'm having fun, that's all that matters. Maybe I do have enough things to keep me busy for 5 life times. I told my kids that whenever I die to take what they want and call an auction company. Your going to love your loom!
|
Yes, I finally decided that was my problem. Too many things I want to do, just can't get it all done. When at 65, I first retired, I was so happy with so much time to do what I wanted to do. Now at 75, I sometimes wonder why I don't have that same amount of time that I had 10yrs. ago. I blame it on being slower. God bless you all
