go to blackfriday sales?

I have been to walmart a couple of times but I have never been to a fabric blackfriday sale. Do they ever have anything good? I am close to a Joann's, Hancock's, and Hobby Lobby!

I know its a little early but I was just talking to my husband about what our daughter wants for christmas and he mentioned maybe we could snag one on blackfriday sales even cheaper!

Cathe 10-15-2009 10:50 AM

JoAnn every year.

In fact, that's the only place I go on Black Friday.

They have great sales. They always have flannel on sale at an awesome price, and then fleece is on sale that day and sometimes the next. I don't remember if calico was on sale. I am sure Christmas calico was. I buy a lot of garment fabrics. Their Christmas gift wrap, floral and crafty stuff is on sale. My nieces do scrapbooking, and there are good prices for scrapbook stuff on that day, too. I got a nice OTT light for my mom one year.

trupeach 10-15-2009 10:50 AM

Do leave me in suspense what does your daughter want for christmas???

Jim's Gem 10-15-2009 10:51 AM

I hate crowds, I avoid that day like the plague. We have an outlet mall in town here, I don't go anywhere near them durring the holidays!

amma 10-15-2009 11:42 AM

I used to send my kids out on Black Friday to do my shopping for me LMBO as they ENJOYED shopping, even in mass crowds!!! Now they all work and live in different areas  can you tell I am not a shopper
I only go now if it is a really good sale, and resign myself ahead of time for long waits in line outside the store waiting for it to open, crowded stores, long waits to check out...that being said...It has to be a really good sale to drag me out of a nice warm bed and out into our nasty, wet, cold, winter weather

thismomquilts 10-15-2009 12:03 PM

I HATE black Friday sales and usually avoid them - I am not a shopper at all... BUT a few years ago I 'discovered' JoAnn's sales - that first year it was WONDERFUL - the second year it was great - but the last couple of years - not so much - they have only a few of the SPECIALS in stock and unless you are the first one in the door and know exactly where to go - forget it - no rainchecks (here anyways!) then so many of the sales are on different days of the weekend - which does not make sense to me - I am less likely to go back to get something else - - -sell it all on one day for heaven's sake!!

sewjoyce 10-15-2009 12:58 PM

I've been to Black Friday sales but usually I just hide under the bedcovers all day! Those people out there can be vicious!! :D

I have been to Black Friday sales at my "old" JoAnn Store -- the one they closed in order to open a "super JoAnn's". It was great. However, at the new super store, I don't go there at all unless I really have to -- and never on Black Friday!

justwannaquilt 10-15-2009 01:35 PM

Tru, she wants a Nintindo DS for Christmas. We do alot of road trips when she is not in school so she is wanting it for when we are on the road!

I was just looking online at last years Joann's blackfriday sales flyer! I can't wait for this years to get out! I don't mind crowds and my husband will be at home with the kids so that gives me even more of a reason to get out and go!

trupeach 10-15-2009 01:38 PM

have you thought about black friday on line. those usually start at midnight and you can avoid the crazyness of stores.

justwannaquilt 10-15-2009 01:38 PM

Sewjoyce, Why don't you like your new super joann's?

We just got a new one and besides one cutter that I DESPISE!!!!! I love going there! I really don't like her so much that if I have a number and she is the cutter that will be cutting my fabric I will hand someone else my number and take another one! I don't care if I have to wait for 75 people to get their fabric cut before it is my turn again! maybe by then she will have gone to lunch, break, or home! lol

justwannaquilt 10-15-2009 01:41 PM

Tru thats a good idea, I will have to check out who has what online! As long as the don't jack up shipping it would be nice! Thanks!!!!

At the super JoAnn's -- it's very large, unfriendly, can't find anything, unfriendly, stand in long lines to get anything cut, stand in even longer lines to pay, and oh, did I mention that the people who work there aren't very friendly??? BUT in their defense -- they are so short handed that they might only have one lady cutting during a big sale. Doesn't make me any happier but does explain their lack of friendliness and long lines....so I just stay home and shop online.... (and not at JoAnns.com) :D

Ninnie 10-15-2009 02:37 PM

I hate shopping and don't go out of the house that day LOL

justwannaquilt 10-15-2009 03:51 PM

I really don't like shopping either, I will send my husband to the store if at all possible! BUT I hate paying retail price even more than I hate shopping! lol

The only way I buy groceries is if they are on sale, I have a coupon, or if I just can't live without it! Since the only local place to shop we have is walmart I use cop ads from all the not so local grocery stores and get the name brand cheaper than the walmart brand most of the time!

I do go all out on meat though. I buy from a local butcher!

littlehud 10-15-2009 05:04 PM

Three years ago my DD bought my Brother sewing machine on line on Black Friday. It was a bottom of the line sewing machine but it still sews like a dream. I will always love that machine because it started my quilting adventure.

ladybugquilter 10-15-2009 05:09 PM

Blackfriday is my favorite shopping day of the year. Not much of a shopper, but my Mom, sister and I used to go every year of as long as I can remember. After I lost my mom I didn't go for a few years. My sister and I went last year and plan on going again this year. I can't wait until my DD's are old enough to go:)

Joanns usually has good sales in my area as well as AC Moore.

bj 10-15-2009 05:16 PM

I know I am revealing my non-shopper-ness, but I have no clue what black Friday is. I'm thinking maybe the Friday after Thanksgiving, but would love to know for sure.

Yes it is. It is pure craziness and I never miss it. I start at 4:00 in the morning. Stand in line at the first store that is opening. Then I make sure I am at JoAnn's when it opens. Wouldn't miss it. Last year I bought Queen size down comforters for $19.00. They were really nice. My kids loved them. I also bought lots of fabric, Ipods and toys (65% off Fisher price). I was home by noon and started decorating for Christmas. It is my favorite weekend.

Teacup 10-15-2009 06:06 PM

I usually work the day after Thanksgiving. Several years ago my friend and I agreed to meet at the mall after I got off work. Although we "missed out" on the 6 a.m. bargains (I didn't want them anyway, and there are usually only a few in stock), we were very surprised to find the mall nearly empty, as the early shoppers were exhausted and at home. And most of the sales went all day long, so we had a great time and scooped up enough bargains to make us happy. I still don't usually shop that day, but if I do, I don't go until late afternoon.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-15-2009 06:22 PM

I went out shopping on Black Friday once. It was a crazy marathon with a friend of mine. We left home at 5am and didn't get back until 8pm. That was way more shopping than I needed. The crowds were crazy!!!!!

Now I Black Friday shop online. Many sites have great sales and I don't have to get dressed!!!

justwannaquilt 10-15-2009 06:23 PM

I hear ya about the bottom of the line machine that you just love to pieces! I don't even like the thought of getting a new machine as much as I should simply because I know the machine I have now would get "abandoned"! I have a Brother Xl2600i my dad got it for me for Christmas the year my husband was in bootcamp so I would have something to do. In other words I was living with him and he wanted some stuff made! lol I think he paid about 100 bucks (AT MOST) for it from walmart! It doesn't do much, and it has a SUPER tiny throat space but I love that stupid thing! lol I have been sewing on it for four years and it has never "hiccuped" even once!

jbud2 10-15-2009 06:51 PM

I miss the "Deer Lonely Ladies" day sales they used to have here in Pennasylvania. So many men went out hunting the first day of deer season they had special sales for the ladies. The first day of antlered deer season is always the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

from what I have found they usually have free shipping on black friday. or just google the store name and coupon code it will pop up with coupon codes for the store you want. I never buy anything on line without a coupon code and I HAVE to buy everything on line including groceries. So just an example would be joanns fabric free shipping code or joanns fabric coupon code or joanns promo code. I do it everyway to see what is the best coupon to use.

In the defence of the poor clerk that has most likely been standing there without her breaks like she is soposed to get them an started out at 5:00 in the morning that is at thestore.an you know there are some people whole arn't very nice on that day or thanksgiving day sales either.I'm here to let you know think about it before you get all upset with her or him.Because who knows how long they have been standing there.I just happened to be that poor lady that was catching more h--- than she deserved for about 8 yrs straight.I'd be up by about
4:00an shower an all an at work to fight to get in door so I could do my job.

Nursesews 10-16-2009 03:28 AM

I would rather dig ditches with a spoon than go shopping anytime. :!:

tlrnhi 10-16-2009 03:45 AM

I went 2 times. Once because the Navy Exchange had glider rockers for $88 and it included the foot rest. We were 2d in line and the store only had 4 of them. We were buying 2 and the people in front of us were getting 2. There was a line of about 100 people, all wanting the rockers. The store ONLY had the 4 and weren't getting any more in. What a fiasco!
Then, went with the oldest. Didn't want to go, but told her I'd be a good Mom and go with her. Took us 40 min to find a place to park. We walked in the store, walked around for about 10 min and then went back home.

There's nothing out there with those crazy crowds that I'm going to risk my life for.

Quick story....one year the Navy Exchange on Black Friday was selling Coach purses for 25% off. They are already discounted down about 15%, so another 25% off is a good price. These animals and yes, animals, were pushing and shoving for them! One lady who owned one, had it in her cart, turned her back for a min and found ALL her belongings dumped in her cart and the purse missing! Nope, no thank you! I'm not a purse person and I can find something better to spend $200 on instead of a purse!

I love it as long as I don't have a list.....its just fun :D vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

My granddaugter loves Black Friday. She has been going with me since she was six. We don't have a list. The bigger stores here, the crowds aren't that big so it's not a wild free for all. I do my Christmas shopping for family online, 95% of it from Amazon.

trupeach 10-16-2009 09:46 AM

this is interesting I was surfing around and found out the monday after thanksgiving is call cyber monday that is when there are all the great sales on the internet.

I love Black Friday, its a tradition around here for us to spend the day shopping with with a couple of our close friends. I will get up and go with my buddies and start in the Best Buys parking lot at 3 in the morning ready to hit the sales. We usually make a day out of it planning the routes and what we are after, then we come home and pick up our wives go to breakfast and do it some more.

By lunchtime we go and tank up on Long Island Teas, have a nice lunch and tote the packages for the wives for the rest of the afternoon. After a hard days shopping we will usually end up back at my house eat left overs and hop in the hot tub.

With 5 kids in the house I couldn't afford not to do Black Friday shopping. We are now a well oiled machine. My kids know their wish list is due by Thanksgiving. We comb through the ads and find our must haves and plot our route. We carry walkie-talkies and my H gets in line as soon as we get there. My Best friend and I split up and get whats on our side of the store. My H raidios when he is a couple people away from the register. Sounds kind of crazy but it allows me to get much nicer gifts than I would normally be able to get.

carrieg 10-17-2009 06:42 AM

We have hosted thanksgiving dinner for 12-15 years, so usually am too tired! Have lots of chairs and furniture to move. But until 2 years ago, always had to work that Friday. A couple years ago, mgmt decided to give us an extra permament holiday. But I don't like crowds and don't have kids. Like a previous poster, DH & I have gone out in the pm and found a couple things that I really wanted and the big crazy crowds were gone.

adrianlee 10-17-2009 08:10 AM

Sewjoy I was at a Joann's in the Seattle area couple years ago (I was on a business trip and had time in the afternoon to shop) and encountered couple interesting clerks who weren't getting along and they didn't care if the customers knew it. They acted like spoiled little girls and these gals must have been in late 20's. I mentioned that to the 3rd clerk and she said the manager was out and not there to "keep the girls in line". Now how unprofessional is that? Espeically since jobs are hard to find. I got my little fat-quarters and never went back to that store. The Spokane Joann's always have really nice clerks and even hire young men.

RedGarnet222 10-17-2009 09:07 AM

I have in many years past gone out on black friday's. It is the most fun when you go with a buddy. :D It is like someone said, a mass of people and some of them mean! I once had a woman hit me with a shopping cart and not even say sorry! Ouch!!!

I used to check the sale papers and plan out my shopping route. (The early morning before daybreak hours are cold and it is not fun to experiance.) The best deals was the first stop and so on. But, I have bought some big ticket items for a fraction of the original cost. It is addicting. When you want to stick to your budget, it makes up for the work it takes to get it all finished in one day. Usually by eleven o clock and just in time for a nice lunch and to rest your tired feet. LOL!

Now, All that being said... Guess what.... They have black friday on line too. The major stores like macy's, J.C. Pennys, and Sears all have sales on line on black friday. And most of the time free shipping to sweeten to deal.

I have a friend who buys on sale all during the year. She has a large family and she wraps it and stores it until she puts up her tree. Smarty pants. She really is ahead of the game doing it that way. She just fills in what is missing with the sales. Kind of clever, the frenzy and panic is eliminated.

nuttyhurricane 10-17-2009 09:35 AM

Yes, I have shopped the last two years at Joann's on Black Friday. Take your coupons with you. There has been a coupon for 10% off your total purchases those years. So I purchased fabric at 30-50% off plus the coupon. Made so great PJ bottoms out of fleece for the whole family. Purchased some other fabric for quilts to be made. So I felt like I really accomplished something. Yes it is crowded. It is Black Friday. Take your two patient pills and deal with it.

Katrina

azam 10-17-2009 06:50 PM

You can find the same deals online and you can avoid the crowds. Start you online shopping early though. I've stayed up on Thursday evening so that I can begin my shopping at midnight.

Rubyrednails2 10-17-2009 07:31 PM

Joann's and Hancock's have awesome sales on those days. I have seen women buying the whole bolt of Warm and Natural at 60% off. It is a good time to add flannels to your stash for quick gifts such as receiving blankets.

Need a nice gingher scissors? Buy it that day...great sales.

I try to get there before 7 as the stores are jammed and you will be waiting in line for getting fabric cut. Some women have 2 carts full!

Sure glad I have a wonderful DH who drops me off at the door and waits for me to shop.
