However, the latest newsletter I received referred to the quilts that are donated to Project Linus as "blankets". This really bothers me. I did e-mail their editor Hannah and and requested that she stop doing this. I explained to her that it is difficult enough for quilters to earn the respect of non-quilters due to the influx of foreign made quilts sold in retail stores, but when a major online craft organization also refers to them as blankets it makes it that much harder. How you all feel about this?

A lot of people just don't know there's a difference so it doesn't bother me.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. As I suspected, there are opinions all across the spectrum & that is great. I did hear back from Hannah with Craftsy. She explained that the blankets they receive are all made by various types of constructions such as knitting, crocheting, etc. & that is why they use the generic term of blanket. That makes sense to me except for the fact that the article that caught my attention was addressed to quilters only and not to knitters or crocheters. While I can understand why some people say this is not that important compared to other things going on in their life (believe me I have gone through the mill over the past 3 yrs), I still prefer that my quilts not be referred to as blankets.

I also volunteer with Project Linus, the organization accepts handmade blankets, and quilts and calls the group that makes them blanketeers. I make quilts but also sew on linus lables on hundreds of blankets as well as quilts they all are donated by the most generous people you can imagine. It used to bother me also, but since seeing the many fleece blankets that are tied and donated not so much of a bother any more.

Nah, it doesn't bother me. To me a blanket is a covering and I don't find it an offensive label.

A Blanket is woven.
A Quilt is pieced then quilted or tied. A Blanket is one piece of woven heavy or thick, for warmth fabric. A Quilt is many pieces sewn together to form a bed covering. To Quilt is the process of attaching three pieces of fabric, one of which is usually pieced, together to form a quilt. Both verb and noun. A wall hanging, picture, table runner, etc can be quilted,(verb) but a quilt (noun) goes on a bed! Phyllis 82 yrs in Oregon 70 yrs. quilting quilts. |
I have a good friend whom I will be making a large quilt for next year, she chooses to refer to it as a bedspread - SO WHAT, our friendship is more important than how she chooses to view things in life. Life is TOO short to sweat small stuff.

It doesn't bother me. I make quilts as my creative outlet. I love it and have fun with it. I don't make them for anyone else's approval. I do enjoy having someone admire my quilts though. Please don't let this stop you from giving to charity. Project Linus is a very worthy cause. If you look on their website they call quilts blankets too. It still doesn't mean that the child who receives it will love it any less.
