Funny you should post this question. I recently gave a baby quilt to a young woman for her baby shower. She thanked me at the shower for the "blanket" and also in a thank you card she said she loved the baby "blanket". I cringed both times, but didn't let on and would never say a word to correct anyone. I was just happy that she said that it matched her nursery perfectly and that she loved it. But, in my mind I was screaming..."Quilt!".

I tie all my quilts. Can't afford the cost to send out. A while back I showed my neighbor a quilt I made. She says, how can you call that a quilt?? It's tied. My response.. what did settlers do?? They did not have sewing machines. What would you call the quilts they made. She said have a good day, I have to go now.
I make a quilt, cut fabric, sew it, and tie it. I don't care what other people think. To me they are ignorant |

Suppose someone crochets an afgan? Or cuts up some fleece with some fringe? Technically - not quilts. But I'm sure very warmly received by any charitable organization looking to provide coverings/blankets/snuggies/quilts for children. Seems sort of petty to complain about quilters not getting the "appropriate" recognition when it should be about the kids. There are plenty of other venues where it would be more worthwhile to point out the distinction between quilts and blankets. |
Nope, doesn't bother me at all. A quilt is a blanket in that it is a covering. I refer to my quilt as "my blankie."

I don't really know about PL, but creepy crawlies go up my spine when I hear a "quilt" called a "blanket". Jeez! A "pot" is not a "skillet" even though it is a cooking utensil, and a "car" is not a "truck" even though it is a motor vehicle. I realize that the differences might seem minor to some, and it might just be semantics, but if I'm a little bit OCD, that's fine, just call it what it is.

The Linus Project here just did a "blanket" project day. They took two pieces of fleece, put them together. Tied them together by cutting fringe and tieing it in knots. They made a 160. I would rather have QUILT........... |
