My mom lives in a small mountain town and said one year all the quilts had the same fabric in them at a quilt show because wal mart was the only place to shop. I think that would be hard to come up with something different.

I used to do the block of the month with my LQS and had a blast. We had about 12 people to start and only 6 finished on time and shared quilts.......the borders made each different so they weren't entirely cloned but we sure had a lot of fun doing them. I like the ones in the spring and summer because it is easier for me to get out without having to fight the elements. But I just do my own at home now......

I did a BOM 3D aplliqué once but we all got to use our own fabrics, don't think I would have done it otherwise.

If I did BOM's or Kits I would not have the stash I currently hide. Wandering thru fabric shops, even on-line, is my idea of heaven. I hate to go shopping, but fabric shops are not shopping - they are my inspiration. I rarely have a specific quilt in mind when I enter those hallowed doors - I buy enough of what strikes my fancy, usually not less than 5 yards of the main color, and put the fabrics on display until they talk to me and tell me what they really want to become.

i have done several, the ones where you buy the first block and if you bring that back you get the next one free...so in a sense you get the 12 blocks for $6.00, if you go every month with your finished block....so that seemed to be the bargain.....but now i have 3 sets of 12" blocks sitting in the ufo pile.......maybe some day...........gina

I like doing the patterns in my own fabric choices, or one-off BOMs for guild drawings or exchanges. Then you have the feeling of a shared experience without identical results. I can't imagine paying $25-30/mo for a year or more plus the investment of time and energy to end up with a quilt that is identical, or nearly so, to many others. My mom and I are planning to use a Civil War quilt blog's BOM patterns to make our own quilt, but with our own fabric choices and a la carte.

I have done a couple that are of civil war material and that is my favorite. I am now doing the patriots & petticoats one also but I am using the fabric. I have done one where I used fabric I wanted to and some other quilters did the same thing and it was interesting how different they looked.

I won't even do charity quilts with a group that dictates what I am to do and what I am to do it with. I agree with those who say that "individuality" is important in quilting. I know that everyone's quilt is different, but to want to make it the same.... ahhh, not for me.

Actually, there are quilts in me screaming to get out and that leaves me very little time to do BOMs (I've never done one). I've discovered my creative outlet and I can't go into my quilting room and do someone else's thing.

I really wanted to do the 'first of the month 2011' BOM here on the board, but the patterns won't print true to size on my mac, so no, I haven't done one. The theme of 'Houses' just inspired me. I will find another PP project to try. Any suggestions?

Sometimes charities will ask for the same quilt so that there is no comparing of one to another and that everyone received the same thing. Childrens Hopstials do this with the PJ's....it keeps the kids who have a little less from feeling "not as good" as others and this is terribly important in the healing process.
