Handquilting for me - wish I had a long arm - or a Janome with a frame would do just fine - and a stitch regulator!

Lori L 07-16-2010 05:30 AM

No long arm....but boy someday do I hope to have one. I have the room, just don't have the money currently. 2 kids in college can do that to you :)
I have sent a quilt out to a longarmer and I have done a project hand quilting. I found the hand quilting to be much nicer!

MNM 07-16-2010 05:34 AM

I love pieceing and putting the blocks together but when I tried to quilt my own quilt I found I did not enjoy it.
I send mine out to a dear friend who is in the business of quilting. I tried using her long arm and was so tense that I decided never to do it again. I like the puzzle part of quilt making and I like to make the back of my quilts as clean and sharp as the front.

no lomgarm here - some things I do on my pfaff others I send out to a longarm quilter

Joeysnana 07-16-2010 05:56 AM

No longarm for me. In fact I had never heard of them before I discovered this forum. Wall hangings and lap quilts are my cup of tea. I am just learning to piece on my Brother and Singer and will do hand quilting to finish my projects. Tried SID this week. I may keep up with it or not. Hand quilting relaxes me.

Nope I do not own a long arm machine . I am a dedicated piecer. I send out my quilts for longarm work .. .it is worth the money. No hassle.. no back ache... no stress trying to get that big quilt through my little arm machine.... no puckers... alot more quilting creativity.... and more time for me to get to the piecing that I love. Too many quilt tops sat around some never getting quilted because it was my least favorite thing to do ....and I always managed to dissappoint myself in the quilting.

missgigglewings 07-16-2010 06:12 AM

I use a Bernina 160 Quilter's Edition for all of my quilting. I am still practising FMQ. Anyone want a couple of dozed pot holders? lol

I piece on a Janome.

The reason I have these 2 machines is because sister #2 has a janome and loves it and sister #4 has a Bernina and loves it! It was my mistake to ask them for their opinions!

So glad to see your comments, I was begining to think I was the only one that did not quilt my own quilts.

I have a girlfriend that makes quilts and we both send them to a profesional quilter and every quilt we get back is such a surprise because of the pattern and the thread she uses. We just tell her what ever pattern and color thread she thinks. I made a quilt and it was for a little boy and she put all kinds of gears on it it was wonderful.I also made a quilt with cow fabric on the back and denim and cotton on the top and she put all weatern quilting boots, stars. bull heads with horns etc.

Quilt4u 07-16-2010 06:37 AM

No long arm here. Just hand quilting and my small machine.

It scrunch it very tight and begin at the center. It can only get easier from there.

And some days are better than others. lol

Mar_ie 07-16-2010 06:47 AM

Just a domestic machine with a slightly bigger work area. My local quilt shop owner has told me about using a big wooden hoop and quilt a little at a time.

pollyjvan9 07-16-2010 06:50 AM

No, I don't have a long arm. I would love to have one, but room for one is the issue (as well as the price!). I FMQ on my Juki and most of my stitch in the ditch quilting on an old Pfaff I pulled out of my storage building a couple of months ago.

mcr785 07-16-2010 06:58 AM

I rent time on a longarm at a local store - rental time is very reasonable and someone on hand to teach the method. Worth investigating in your area even if you need to drive a little.

bob1414 07-16-2010 07:06 AM

Hariett Carpanini, a member here, does all my quilting for me. I LOVE her work!!

Crickett Sweet 07-16-2010 07:28 AM

I do send some out to a longarme quilter but I have done quite of few on my Elna Quilters Dream 7200, includint the one in my avatar.

fktsewing 07-16-2010 07:47 AM

I wish I had a longarm, but am doing mine on my regular sewing machine. As soon as we know where we are going, hubby is making me a makeshift one to use with my 33 year old Kenmore for free motion quilting.

All Thumbs 07-16-2010 08:09 AM

No longarm for me but I have considered one. (smiling here but the dollar signs are choking me) I have a Bernina820 with a larger throat and do a lot of free motion quilting. I also use the walking foot for cross-hatching charity quilts on both the 820 and my little Bernina820. I recently sold my 440QE which was one super machine and probably would have kept it had the throat been larger. A very old Riccoh sits in the closet for when the old-time-fever hits me.

Mimz 07-16-2010 08:42 AM

I dont have a long arm and am just learning to use my machine I have had for 10 years. I understand its a quiltting machine so will be seeing if it dose.

Mimz 07-16-2010 08:43 AM

I have fournd lots of information on you tube on how to use a non-longarm sewing machine for quilting

Ilovemydogs 07-16-2010 08:44 AM

regular machine for me!

No longarm for me just a wish to have one someday

Patti 07-16-2010 08:49 AM

Most of my quilts are hand quilted but when I machine quilt, it's a domestic machine.

colleen1978 07-16-2010 09:26 AM

Just my BabyLoc and me...wouldn't a longarm be wonderful? I'll keep dreaming...

I'm dreamin' too!!!!

klgreene 07-16-2010 10:13 AM

No I don't have a longarm, would love one. My machine doesn't let down the feed dogs either, so I've been doing a lot of stitch in the ditch. I bought a Super Slider to do free hand quilting, and all that happens is the feed dog eats it. I may go back to hand quilting.

domestic for me too

Glenda Kay 07-16-2010 11:08 AM

No, I don't have a longarm. Wish I did, but too expensive. I have hand quilted all my quilts. I did recently buy a new sewing machine though & am practicing free motion. Might get brave enough to try quilting a throw one of these days.

fliedermaus 07-16-2010 11:17 AM

I haven't yet done this myself...but I got a great DVD from the Library on Machine Quilting that shows how to do it. After laying out backing, batting and top and pining then they rolled it up and clipped the rolls. Unrolled part and when quilting she put the free end up over her shoulder. sorry for the not so great description.. I think you have to see it for yourself to understand. It was an Eleanor Burns " Quilt in a Day", called Machine Quilting Primer with Cheryl Martin. As a beginner I thought it was very helpful.

I too had a old machine...one of my good friends solved the quilting problem for me. you take tissue paper and draw, trace, or freehand your pattern on the paper, mine at that time was hearts, then you pin the paper to your quilt (you have to handle with care) then you can slowly stitch around the pattern. the tissue paper just pulls right off, or you can use one of the stenciles and draw on your quilt. Sometimes when you do this the product you use does not come out of the material and can still be seen.

I live in a motor home at least 7 months a year. My grandson wanted a cars quilt for his bed. Problem is his bed is queen size and they don't make one that big. So granny had to make one. we were in the motor home at that time. I find that a ironing board has many uses. It works great at the end of a table to hold the extra weight, and as I quilted it free motion I kept moving the ironing board futher foim the table.

uniquelynancy 07-16-2010 11:59 AM

I send mine out to three different longarmers. I don't have the room for one. I used to hand quilt all my quilts but i can no longer do that.

No long arm for me, but my sister has one and I buy the designs, backing and batting, for her and she does them. In turn though, I sew her bindings down for her on all of her quilts! say ouch to sore fingers!! I hope to have pic up here one day soon.

littlehud 07-16-2010 12:27 PM

I have a Juki on a Grace frame, but I quilted on the Juki by itself for a number of years.

quilt3311 07-16-2010 12:49 PM

I have a HQ-16 (sit down machine) I use this on large quilts and do small pieces on my Bernina 150. Both work well to get my quilts finished quickly.

EdieClay 07-16-2010 12:52 PM

I use a Pfaff sewing machine. I have had the experts at my LQS quilt my quilts on a long arm. However, after being on this Board for a few months, I have been inspired and am planning to quilt a baby quilt I am finishing on my Pfaff.

Momwood 07-16-2010 12:57 PM

Mine is new but it is just a domestic machine.
