Annz 07-16-2010 09:25 PM

No long arm here, just my arm and my Pfaff 2134.

Sadheart 07-16-2010 09:57 PM

Mine is about 17 years old.
Maybe you can still do the straight line. Or stitch in the ditch.

i have a mixture of differnet machines. Some drop feed dogs others don't. I tend to use one machine for a specific quilt or topic. i donot have thev long arm your are talking about but a fram similiar to the Little Grace size 8ft. i use it sometimes to just sandwich layers easily or a quilt using a juke with the widest space from needle to bar.????
i also like to do free motion on my brother, feed dogs down .
i have used youtube agreat deal to give me confidence to have a go after years of leaving the quilting and never finishing a quilt. i also like hand quilting. i live on my own my sewing room is my whole cottage.
i must go as i am going to purchase an old treadle machine. Gave mine away a few years ago and regreted it ever since.

be in tyouch when i get back.

Maybe one day.

starlight 07-17-2010 03:07 AM

I have a mid-arm but also use my domestic on the smaller quilts. Admit that I am still learning the mid-arm

I am not familiar with the Big E, does it go by another name?
I have Images and World Quilts on my list to go to within the next month.

Lizzytish 07-17-2010 05:19 AM

sorry double clicked

Mimz 07-17-2010 05:39 AM

Okay for a block quilt I lay them on the floor and mesure the back and batting and then add middel and top. Then I pin everything in place and then roll it to the place I am going to start the quilting. then move it to the machine . then work my way out the old scrunch way.

newbee 07-17-2010 06:05 AM

Right now I am using my sewing machine--but I bought a Pfaff that has a 10" throat so I can handle the quilts better. I am saving for a longarm, but need to clean out part of the basement to make room! I also have sent out one top to be quilted professionally. It had too many white blocks where all of my quilting errors could show!!

skothing 07-17-2010 06:08 AM

I have a Diamond from Husqvara with a deep throat. I do machine quilting and embroiery on my quilts. Love it.

Crickett Sweet 07-17-2010 06:19 AM

I believe the official name is Eastern States Exposition. I live in the Albany, NY area and as a child, we used to go every year. My family enjoyed it more than our own State Fair. My dad was so impressed with a Pfaff demonstration there that he bought one for my mom.

Me too, no room. I do have a pfaff expressions 2.0 that has an 10 inch throat, so except fo a king size it is not so difficult. Also use the scrunch method.

lillybeck 07-17-2010 06:42 AM

I would love a long arm but have always used a regular machine for my quilting. It does get difficult at times but worth the trouble.

penski 07-17-2010 09:37 AM

just a reg ole sewing machine here for me , i heard that if your feed dogs dont go down you could put something over them and do FMQ on your machine

stillwaters 07-17-2010 09:39 AM

I've free motion quilted two queen sized quilts and many baby/lap sized quilts on my old Pfaff. I'm looking forward to trying it with my new baby - Creative Vision 5.0 with it's 10" throat.

I have 2 six-foot folding tables (from Costco) that I set up on "bed lifters" (from Bed Bath and Beyond). I can spread out my quilt "sandwich" and pin, without killing my back.
If you don't have room for tables this size, many LQS or churches will let you use their tables (is there are no meetings or classes going on). I cannot use the floor anymore with my bad back and knee replacement.

GailG 07-17-2010 10:03 AM

Domestic! No room, and I'm too clumbsy.

Luv Quilts and Cats 07-17-2010 10:07 AM

I do not have a long arm and I don't think I want one. I usually have my quilts done by a long armer who has a business. She does aweome work and I trust her completely.

livenlearn124 07-17-2010 10:08 AM

ok..since you have both, which dor you like better for general use?

I piece on a Janome.

The reason I have these 2 machines is because sister #2 has a janome and loves it and sister #4 has a Bernina and loves it! It was my mistake to ask them for their opinions!

Anna O 07-17-2010 10:37 AM

I have a longarm. After doing king size quilts for years, my arms just couldn't carry the "load" any more.

Granny B 07-17-2010 10:45 AM

I have a Statler Optimum and love it. Since my hands gave out with arthritis, it's the only way I can still quilt. I love the computerized and the manual modes. I wish there was some kind of machine that would still allow me to golf. I'd buy that, too.

ConnieF 07-17-2010 12:16 PM

Do all my quilting on one of the Vikings I have....would love a long but not in the budget for now...

auntiehenno 07-17-2010 01:44 PM

Don't think I will buy one. Like my many machibes, piece and quilt by hand. Unless doing chain peicing.

carmen4him 07-17-2010 01:58 PM

What is the name of your quilt shop? I have been wanting a longarm for a long time. Thanks. Happy Stitchin.

pieces 07-17-2010 02:28 PM

I don't have a longarm. And I don't have any ambition to ever own one. I like to piece quilt tops, and machine embroidery
quilt blocks for crib/lap quilts. Once I finish a quilt top I'm ready to move on to the next one. I have a great longarm quilter I take my quilts to, she does a wonderful job and I'm always satisfied with her work.

carolynjo 07-17-2010 02:31 PM

Have you tried using a credit card to cover your feed dogs and use a free motion open-toed foot? I quilt on a 50 year-old Singer and sometimes cover the feed dogs as above.

azam 07-17-2010 03:31 PM

Tin Lizzie 18, here.

Janie Q 07-17-2010 04:24 PM

I've made about 30 quilts and had them all quilted by a professional. I just got a new Janome 6600 and am starting to practice so I can do my own. I'm inspired by the work I see on this board.

I don't know this message board well enough to know if it is I or not that you were asking this question of. But I will answer. The name of the shop where I rent time on the long arm is Quilt Yourself.

Judie 07-17-2010 06:22 PM

No long arm machine here.. I'm not sure I want one.. I know that sounds weird to a bunch of quilters, but I don't think I want yet another thing to take care of. I think I'd rather piece than quilt all the time, which I'd have to do if I bought one!

I have a beautiful Creative Vision 5.5 machine, and it's a dream to work with. I do most of my quilts on it, but have sent out very important quilts to a LAQ..

Farm Quilter 07-17-2010 09:17 PM

Longarm - an Innova 18" on 12' frame. Got it after I quilted 4 placemats on my DSM! Best investment I ever made! I quilt both for myself and as a business.
