I watch Walmart for the occaisional chintz that I like to work with.
|
Most of my fabrics are batiks and that is the usual cost per yard. Sometimes more! And I heard fabric is going up in price (oh no!).
|
You really have to watch out about the shipping when getting things to Canada. I always make sure that anyone I buy from is willing to use USPS and not UPS. I very seldom have to pay any extra charges for duty even when I have ordered bolts of fabric. I have also never had anything go astray with USPS.

UPS has manages somehow to make themselves a:thumbdown: broker for the border and can charge you whatever  they want  when sending stuff across the border, PLUS  their fee. Now they NEVER tell you this up front, but he  cost can be astronomical! TreeFrog |
I pay $9 a yard if I really love the material. When I start a project I go to my stash first and see if I have what I'm looking for and if I can build my quilt from there. If I can get a good start I add the new stuff. Most LQS in my area charge at least that, sometimes as much as $12/yard. I am getting ready to go to Pacific International Quilt Show in Oct and I know the prices are going to be $9 or close to it.
So I try to be very selective and will sometimes buy only 1/2 yard pieces. |
except for vacations, never!
|
I've paid that much on occasion, if it's a fabric I REALLY really love - or something I needed desperately to finish a top. Otherwise, I shop the sales at my LQS and online, esp for borders & backings. Also trying to use more of my stash & make more scrap quilts !!

Because of the bad economy lots of quilt shops closed their doors. In that case I buy a whole bunch of real quilting fabrics when it's on sale. But my stash whit real quilting fabs is quite small. So only for swaps and special quilts I use real quilting fabrics. :) ( and yes I use old clothes and linnen too :) ) |

canuckninepatch: That is terrible that UPS charged that. Where I live, they are not allowed too accept any money for any of us. I think I would be checking into that. They may be pocketing the money. Gosh I just never heard of such!

International Shipping
The shipping charges for shipping international orders are based on the estimated weight of the package. The shipping charge is calculated after the Bill To section of the on-line order form is completed. This allows you to review the shipping charges prior to submitting your order. International orders, which do not fit into a Global Priority Envelope, will be shipped via UPS. The shipping charges do not include any customs or duty charges that may be due in a particular country. Fabric.com has no control over those charges and they are the sole responsibility of the person placing the order. When it is possible, we will ship packages via Global Priority, for a flat rate of $15.95. Please note, there are weight and size restrictions for this shipping option. Not all orders will qualify for this method. If your country's name is not listed in the country selection field on the order form, we do not currently ship to your country. this is FABRIC.COM why not check with these sites via their 'contact us' tab and find out what they can do for you? they want your business. they provide an email address. |

my quilt shop goes for 8 dollars a yard for most of the fabrics, 9 seems a little bit high, for me i wait till the have coupons or days where they offer a percentage off their yards or i wait till i have a gift certificate because i think 8 is even a little steep

I bought about 20 yds today at a quilt shop at $4.50 per yard. Of course it helped that the quilt shop was going out of business. I really hate it for her, but glad for me. She had fat quarter at $1.00 ea. I spent over $200.

I will never pay $9 a yard for fabric. I sew as a hobby. I don't make a profit from it.

$2/yd is my goal. Have paid as much as $4/yd for something I needed to finish a project. I'm really cheap. Can't imagine paying $9/yd for fabric and then not liking it when I'm done. If I give it away I don't feel like I've been cheated.
|
I buy lots and lots of fabric from garage sales, flea markets etc. You would be surprised the deals you can find. People buy it then decide they don't want it.
Judy in Ohio |
If it isn't on sale I must do without it or wait.
|
I try not to pay over $5/yd. Will go up to $6 if I have to, but prefer to wait for a sale.
|
A couple of years ago I lived in the Southern California Desert area. I used to shop at Discount Fabrics in Lancaster and buy quilting fabrics (45" wide) for $2 to $2.50/yard. No, they didn't have as great of a selection as you find at most LQS.
|
I don't get to buy fabric, I only get to quilt because the wonderful people on this board give me fabric so I can quilt. God bless.
|
Well at the moment the currency exchange is good for us. For example $7.99 US = $8.73Au so only a little difference, most of our fabric though in LQS are $22Au to $28Au (well over here on the West coast anyway). We can buy it from other stores for an average price of $19.95Au/metre and on sale for anywhere from $2 to$8/metre but one has to be careful of what type of fabric it is as not all of it is good quality and it shows. Quite often the fabric in those particular stores that are put out for this price are also types that aren't selling for what ever reason.
I recently bought a roll of fabric from one of these stores which was on sale for $6. It look and felt fine but when I washed it, the fabric frayed badly, wrinkled worse and also lost a lot of colour. The fabric was from India and I was dubious intially but thought, why not give it a try as it isn't dear etc. Lesson learnt  Maybe1day |
i only buy when its under $7 a yard.
|
I tend to by local, and keep the small business' open. We have 2 small stores in the community in which I live, if one store has a sale, then that is where I shop! If they both have a sale then I frequent both! I tend to purchase things on sale, and my mother in law is a great source! I will take old shirts, jeans and what not apart. However if I NEED a certain colour then I go get that one colour!

I make the 1 1/2 hour trip to Marshall's in Batesville, AR for special projects. However, I always end up with plenty for my stash while I'm there. I can't justify sewing for charities and paying $9/yd for the fabric.

Can we see too?

It is so beautiful I just can't stop looking at it. If I ever get over that, someday I will use it to make something for myself for a change of pace. How about patterns? Do you all spend the $9 at QS's or do you use free patterns, or buy a book and use it over and over if you find a favorite?
