Does quilting bring you comfort?

I've realized recently that most everything about quilting brings me comfort. Not just the end result - a quilt. The fabrics, colors, the processes of washing/drying fabrics, ironing them, cutting them, sewing together, squaring them, making/applying binding, on and on. It seems almost therapeutic. I can have a less than perfect day or specific problem and find great comfort and restoration in the quilting world. How about you?

sewbeadit 06-11-2012 10:46 PM

Yes, I think that is why most of us quilt, all of the above. My studio is where I can relax and do something I really enjoy.

earthwalker 06-11-2012 11:01 PM

A wholehearted YES from me. The quiltmaking process has kept me going through some extraordinarily difficult times. It seems to still my mind....a sort of shifting of gears....hard to explain....but whatever...it works for me. The physical component is taken care of by the garden. So between the two activities (not to mention all the other work/housekeeping etc. etc.) I "keep on keeping on":).

Moonglow 06-12-2012 01:20 AM

Quilting keeps me sane. Like Earthwalker I have been through some very difficult times and I know I will face some more difficult times in the future so I will keep on making quilts. It is the best therapy for me.

mcdaniel023 06-12-2012 01:34 AM

I can come home from a very stressful day at work, walk into my studio and find complete peace. Yep, it is the best therapy for whatever is bothering you.

teddysmom 06-12-2012 03:07 AM

I've only been quilting a couple of years but I find the process to be very relaxing. I hand piece and hand quilt so I don't have to make any special preparations to pick up where I left off. No running out of bobbin thread, no thread breaking, no bunching up under the pressure foot, etc. Just one stitch at a time by hand. Ah, how relaxing!

leatheflea 06-12-2012 03:22 AM

Yep, I started quilting after having nervous breakdown. Quilting stitched my life back together.

quilter1 06-12-2012 03:32 AM

Quilting does bring me comfort and joy. It is a peaceful process.

Shelbie 06-12-2012 03:35 AM

I've always called quilting "my sanity saver". My sewing room is where I do my best problem solving, relaxing, rehearsing and re-grouping. It's the one place in our house that I am usually alone (except for DD's cat!) I have a very busy life and everyone needs a little down time. The added benefit to this is that we usually end up with a wonderful finished quilt.

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 06-12-2012 03:50 AM

It makes the hours fly by. I love to hand quilt because I can watch TV and do it in my leisure but I found I really don't like to machine quilt.

gollytwo 06-12-2012 03:53 AM

Unfortunately for my wallet, buying fabric I love brings me the most joy.
Cutting is a source of zen-like comfort (though not for my wrist).

jillnjo 06-12-2012 03:58 AM

I can relax and enjoy all the processes it takes to complete a quilt in my sewing area. It is one of the most peaceful things I do-QUILT!! My mind is always on the go, creating a block or a quilt. And, many times, I don't have any idea what I'll do with it when it's completed. I'm thankful to have an outlet that is so fun and rewarding.

ragquilter 06-12-2012 04:02 AM

I didn't realize just how much I enjoyed and how it settled my nerves until recently. We are moving so I packed my stash and took my machines in for service last week. I will be so glad to get moved and unpacked so I can start sewing again. I will actually have a room for sewing instead of sharing the living room at our current house.

Susan Sanders 06-12-2012 04:22 AM

I get comfort and satisfaction! Satisfaction that I have done something unique.

feline fanatic 06-12-2012 04:33 AM

Not only does every aspect of quilting bring me comfort, I actually seem to go into withdrawels if I don't do something quilting related for several days in a row.

Annie68 06-12-2012 04:37 AM

That's a "yes" from me!

turner0106 06-12-2012 04:40 AM

I hand quilt and yes I love it. It is very relaxing to me. Especially after a stressful day or if I can't sleep.

joyce888 06-12-2012 04:41 AM

For me it's one of the best threpeutic things I can do. Or a big stress inducer if something's not turning out like I had expected LOL!

Elainequilts 06-12-2012 04:42 AM

Definitely my therapy of choice.

WandaVA 06-12-2012 04:47 AM

I lost my only "child" (he was 40) in 2006. Quilting was the only thing that kept me from losing myself. It was definitely the best therapy for me. If I am away from my quilting for more than a few days, I go through withdrawal. It may be an expensive "hobby", but it's cheaper than counseling, and the end product can bring joy to others.

Raggiemom 06-12-2012 04:55 AM

It is very peaceful and relaxing. And to top off the relaxation, you have something to show at the end.

carslo 06-12-2012 05:42 AM

Absolutely! I try and sew everyday - it keeps me busy and that keeps me happy and calm. Thank goodness I married a man that understands that just because I am not sitting right beside him - doesn't mean I do not love him.

needles3thread 06-12-2012 05:51 AM

I agree with all this.......very much so...........unless I am struggling with some new technique or
problem area of the process.

quiltsRfun 06-12-2012 05:53 AM

Yes, some days I just want to sew. Maybe it's the sound of the machine. Or maybe it just takes my mind off the worries of the day. But even if I only sew a couple of blocks I feel good and know I've accomplished something.

jcrow 06-12-2012 05:55 AM

My dog guards my door while I'm sewing so I'm not interrupted and I sometimes spend all day sewing. Poor husband some days has to fend for himself. He doesn't mind because he knows I'm in a very good mood when I'm in my sewing room. I'm always at peace in there. Well, usually, unless I made some big mistake and then I'm cussing and unsewing and throwing my fabric down and stomping out of my room and plomping down on the couch for a few minutes. Then I get back up and go back in and pick up my fabric and fix my mistake and relax and continue on. It is so soothing. I think my dog likes me best when I'm in there. He guards me from inside the room. A lot of times he comes up to me to be petted and snoop around and check on me, but he knows I'm always at peace in there. I love my sewing room!!

barny 06-12-2012 06:11 AM

My sewing room is upstairs. My family knows when I say"I'm upstairs", they know what I'm doing. I can go into the messyest sewing room, sit down by my machine with a cup of coffee and just sit there. I'm also at peace. LOL

You and me both. If I can't quilt for awhile, I get very grouchy!

LadyElisabeth 06-12-2012 03:26 PM

Quilting is comforting unless I am trying to finish something for the TV program that I need to film for the program the next day Then it's push, push, push.

Lori S 06-12-2012 03:36 PM

Yes it does bring me comfort..its funny how I can get such pleasure from some really basic things like that pefect crisp point, a beautifully pressed block..yet I find ironing any thing else a real chore.
I have had days that it brought stress.. not many but when it does its time to do something else.

Ccorazone 06-12-2012 03:38 PM

Absolutely!!! I've been feel poorly the last frw days with a sore throat and I told my daiughter, "I'll be glad when this is over so I can get back to quilting. I'm alway wanting to get the current quilt completed so I can start the next one that I have in my mind.

dettonlisas 06-12-2012 03:46 PM

I just had this conversation with my hubby today. I was telling him how I love every part of quilting... starting with the inspiration all they way through to the finished product! QUILTING ROCKS!

Dolphyngyrl 06-12-2012 03:57 PM

It is my stress relief along with this board

valsma 06-12-2012 03:57 PM

I don't know if it brings me comfort but it is threaputic in that when I'm stressing on something I can go in and do some peicing and lose myself in that and forget everything else if just for a little bit.

Silver Needle 06-12-2012 05:25 PM

Another wholehearted yes here. Especially when I am doing piecing on the vintage treadle machine. Don't know why but I find that especially comforting and relaxing. Maybe it has something to do with connecting with our quilting roots!

Christine George 06-12-2012 11:44 PM

Oh leatheflea, I went through the exact same thing. Quilting made my mind slow down and kept me grounded. I was nice to know I could make something beautiful when I wasn't feeling so beautiful myself.

Pat625 06-13-2012 02:15 AM

Quilting has saved my sanity. When I became disabled, I felt like I had no reason to get up in the morning..When I began to quilt, I felt that I had a purpose, and am now working on quilts for all 13 grandbabies...Before I was quilting, I was totally depressed and feeling worthless due to my health limitations

Sandygirl 06-13-2012 02:34 AM

I love to piece. Taking up piecing fulfilled my need to get back to sewing.....a lifelong love .
Sandy

SewBarbie 06-13-2012 02:59 AM

Sewing soothes me! If the corners don't match just so, the seam ripper is my friend! This would frustrate some, but keeps me calm and focused....

Debbie C 06-13-2012 03:05 AM

Reading all these comments, we all relate to the comforts of quilting. I just returned from a 2 week trip to Florida to update details on my parent's care. They are still mostly well, living on their own, but now require just a bit of outside help. My sis and I arranged for everything they now need - of course, I had no time to quilt while I was there and I truly missed being able to retreat to my 'lady cave' for some much-needed down time. Now that I am home again, I've picked up my needle and thread and I'm one happy camper!

luci4 06-13-2012 03:09 AM

I,also, find quilting to to be a great therapy.
