I have been trying to go through and organize my sewing and fabric. I am feeling as though it is waaaaaaaaaaaaayyy excessive and I need to decide what to do with some of it. This thead tells me there are a lot of people in the same place. I keep telling myself less is more, less is more, less is more....I WILL FIND A SOLUTION SOON!

garysgal 01-04-2011 01:31 PM

Do you have a basement or attic? That is a lot of fabric.I have 5 bedrooms, but not all of them have fabric. Some days do you feel like hanging out an "open" sign?

Laura22 01-04-2011 01:39 PM

Sounds like it's probably more fabric than is healthy. You might need to cut back a little or donate some :)

In the bike barn yikes! I have fabric in a number of places but if it ended up with the bikes or vintage cars I think he might actually have a break down.........around here the sewing rooms and the the car and bike shed are private domains....he doesn't use my fabric for rags and I ask before I touch a tool. Wait I never thought about the trunks of some of the cars maybe I could get away with that for a while if I had to. Some of those vintage cars have huge trunks.........probably not a good idea.

LadyCougar 01-04-2011 03:14 PM

I just read your message to my husband, and told him never to tell me I have to much fabric again. So thank you - it made him realize that I wasn't as bad as he thought.

Taughtby Grandma 01-04-2011 04:16 PM

Wasn't there a movie made about that? I think it was like "The Ooze that took over the World".

Olivia's Grammy 01-04-2011 04:32 PM

I have one bedroom full of fabric and I thought I had a lot. How can you keep up with what you have? But, hey, if you can afford it, more power to you. As the price of fabric goes up you'll be secure with your stash.

sewingsuz 01-04-2011 04:35 PM

I have been stretching my house for 26 years now. It is a small house, I feel for you cause we all like our sewing stuff. good luck

mountain deb 01-04-2011 04:36 PM

I have a sewing room, fabric room ( which in real life is the family room) two double closets, storage room (partial) and several cabinets. Gun cabinet by the back door ( for those sneaking quilt cops, they're not coming for me without a fight). hehe

Annaquilts 01-04-2011 04:37 PM

LOL!

sewingsuz 01-04-2011 04:45 PM

It is true, no matter how much bigger your house is we will fill it up. My house is only 1500 sq ft and no basements or attics in Arizona. My grandson live with us so I have to stay organized or it gets to me. I have gone up the walls with storage instead or out.

Annz 01-04-2011 05:02 PM

Wow If I were him I wouldn't let you near the downstairs or soon he will be losing his favortie chair and tv.

I feel your pain. I live in a 3000sq. ft. house...1500 sq. ft. consists of a storage room, craft room, bathroom, quilt area and sewing area!! I have no room, so I need to rethink!

JUNEC 01-04-2011 06:32 PM

You could always try putting more shelving in - Wish I had your problem - Awesome

Ramona Byrd 01-04-2011 06:36 PM

I have a 3 bedroom and two baths, and am getting ready for a visit from a sister. I'm absolutely stunned at the clutter in that guest bedroom, which I simply put a few things in that wouldn't fit in the other, smaller one where I sew. And cut things out. And have a TV in there, plus hundreds of old videos and CDs and books.
Someone, from the look of it several some ones have been coming in and hurling fabric all over the front room when I'm gone, and I'm sticking with that statement. It's not MY fault it has such a marvelous amount..I mean, such a mess in there.

leakus 01-04-2011 06:45 PM

I have a very small bedroom as my sewing room. I am running out of space but it is not due to the fabric. I was thinking about moving the desk with the computer out of the room so I'll make space for the sewing machines but I felt bad that I was going to use the guessroom for the computer. Not anymore!!! I wish I had more fabric. I only have 2 shelves 7 foot long by 1 feet high!

Does your husband build and fly remote control airplanes?

maxi 01-04-2011 08:34 PM

I built shelves in the garage to house my apple boxes of fabric. My husband is just a cook and does not do projects in the garage so it is all mine. Minus the space for the freezer and lawn mower. So in the sewing room I have a day bed for company. Things can get moved around so company can make twin beds out of it or a king size bed. Other wise it houses projects in progress. The one thing that helped the most was to put cabinets up on the walls. I got some of those cabinets to go over the washer and dryer and hung them on either side. It is amazing when you go up how much floor space you gain.

madamekelly 01-04-2011 09:52 PM

I don't think I am out of control as I thought...I can still walk in my sewing room. I gotta get more fabric!!! LOL!

Dee 01-04-2011 10:04 PM

Thats a lot of fabric. I have the attic and it is all mine. This is the first time I have my own space. Love it.

mary hennessey 01-04-2011 10:18 PM

This has been the best five pages to read ever.Quilters are the best people out there. And just so must fun to share with.No good answers of you.I have the same trouble.

garysgal 01-04-2011 10:20 PM

After reading all of these replys, I have to add another 2 cents worth- with the price of fabric going up, we will probably all wish we had 4 rooms of fabric!

Thats so funny, I want to come play at your house

Quilters are wired to reason like that, when it comes to sewing rooms. Our motto should be"If if can hold fabric then that should be the purpose of the room, most of the time".

I hadn't heard that motto before, but it definately fits my home.I don't have quilting fabric or equipment in my tiny bathroom. But I do have a table with quilt magazines on it. I have 3 rooms lined with shelves for fabric, batting, backing, and fat quarters. That sounds like a lot,but I live in the mountains and when it snows the roads close except for emergency vehicles coming into the county. So I go at times 2-3 months without buying fabric.I can do that cause I have so much on my shelves to work with

Do you have your rooms organized by colors? I have 3 rooms of fabric and I separated them into a pastel.a bright, and a dark fabric room.My daughter says I'm strange with organizing, but it makes picking quilt fabric a lot quicker if I only have to go to the pastel room.Have you made any of your fabric into quilts to donate? For every quilt I sell,I make 1 quilt and donate it to the Social Services or Nursing Home.

rona thickpenny 01-04-2011 11:38 PM

cricky . thats a lot of farbric.

katigirl 01-04-2011 11:57 PM

Yeah I'm the same. Storage room for the craft stuff and sewing at the dining room table.

Halfsquare 01-05-2011 12:16 AM

I just got a serger. Now I'm really in trouble. I have an embroidery machine and now I want to be able to embroider, sew, and serge all at the same time. Which means that I have to clear off the tables and then - what do I do with the stuff on the tables????? I'm already packed to the max. So - I'm now moving out to the closets, and all storage furniture in the house. Oh boy -

needles3thread 01-05-2011 09:04 AM

Start reducing your stash..............a few at a time.
It will make your feel good.

ljsunflower 01-05-2011 09:08 AM

sounds like you need to get rid of some "stuff".

needles3thread 01-05-2011 09:24 AM

My husband and I have our own "rooms" in a portion of our basement right next to each other. (an open area, but we have our boundaries---------his & hers) Quilting & clock repair. We both have storage for our stuff, & I have a long arm quilting machine! It took some planning, but it works fine for us.

DeniseP 01-05-2011 09:31 AM

You go girl!!!I surround myself with what makes me happy and fabric makes me happy.

vickig626 01-05-2011 09:31 AM

when my son moved out a few months ago, I quickly took over his bedroom for my sewing room. I have that set up strictly as a "sewing area" - where I work on the actual project. But, we also had another bedroom not being used so I set that one up with my fabric and cutting area. I was able to keep a twin bed in there for when my son comes home for a visit. But, I, too, have noticed I'm slowly overtaking the dining area (no table in there so it's empty too). I think we just tend to take over as our projects expand. :-)

I like the idea of a strictly cutting and fabric area. That helps - except that I still need to cut while I am sewing - so I would be going back and forth a lot. I would love a room that could fit a very long sturdy table for cutting.

vickig626 01-05-2011 11:09 AM

Me too. I have my large cutting table in the room with my fabric for the initial cutting stage then I have another cutting station set up next to my machine when I need to do additional cutting. With my bad back, this works for me. Plus, I have a bar stool at my large cutting table to sit down when I need to.

I have a small room upstairs to sew. But I get lonely up there sometimes. So....I bring my machine downstairs and sit here and sew...then when hubby realizes that I am sewing down here...he says 'YOU GOT A SEWING ROOM UPSTAIRS FOR THAT" AND I say...yes honey, I know, I just don't want you to feel lonely down here all by yourself. Works every time.

Airwick156 01-05-2011 11:27 AM

I got a suggestion. Once we all run out of space for our fabric...we can always build our houses UPWARDS with another floor. ONLY FOR SEWING. Nothing else. Well maybe a bathroom. :)

AnnieH 01-05-2011 11:32 AM

We have a small house (even by UK standards) but my lovely DH has encouraged me to 'nick' the study. I don't think I'd have the nerve to use any other rooms. Get sewing and use up some of that stash.
