Donate quilt?
I made a quilt for my brother and gave it to him for Christmas a few years ago. He loved wolves so I made a DP9 quilt highlighting the wolves. He passed away two years ago and I got the quilt. I would like to donate it to a worthy cause, an suggestions? It is queen size.

Maybe you could check with a local fire dept. they may have the names of families that have lost items for fire and need help

Wherever there has been a tornado, flood or other natural disaster you can contact the churches in the area to find out who is in need, but I like the local fire dept idea very much, too.
I sure am sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. How nice of you to think of donating the quilt to someone else. |
On "Pictures" there is a post by QM on donating a quilt to a forest fire victim. You might Private Message her and inquire about that.

Find an organization that is near and dear to your (or his) heart. I like to donate to local veteran's shelters and homes.

I haven't used this charity but my best friend has:
Quilts of Compassion PO Box 350296 Toledo OH 43635 Janice Grimes They take anything: blocks, tops or quilts and they donate them to where a disaster is located. |
My first choice would be to give it to another family member (son, daughter, wife, nephew, etc.) to whom the quilt might mean something special since it was associated with your brother. If no one like that came to mind, there are good suggestions above. My condolences at losing your brother.

Check out the quilt guilds near you. My guild donates numerous quilts to organizations.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You already have many good ideas. One other option is that some hospitals collect quilts for their cancer patients. They will let a patient use them during chemo (since they get so cold) and then the patient can take it home when s/he is released from the infusion unit.

Again, I am with dunster.

Your question is very close to my heart. When I first read your question I found I was unable to answer you, because of my own personal pain. But today I put my big girl panties on and I'm ready to go again. My first question would be did your brother have kids? If so you might think about (I know this will be hard after all of your work and love), cutting your quilt in half or quarters. Then making the original part the focus and doing something around it to make it lap sized. I've done this and even if the original quilt wasn't the style of the kids, having something of the parent that they have lost is something they like. And because it was something your brother liked, makes it all the better. Sometimes just after we lose someone, we don't want reminders of different things. But as time passes, we think about wishing we still had that favorite shirt or quilt. Just a thought.

I will be donating about 25 or 30 quilts ,mostly big enough to cover one person, to a local food pantry. They give them people that need help.
Sorry about losing your Brother. |
Mother won a quilt in a raffle and she just displayed it on a quilt rack but never used it. In a couple of years, she passed away, I donated it to her lodge. They sold chances on it and made some money. Win Win.
