 When I moved over a year ago, my dad helped me in the move. I remember now him asking what to do with all of my rags, meaning fabric. I think he brought in a front-end loader and started filling boxes. Today, I decided to go through the boxes that dad had packed. I knew I was missing a bunch of FQ's, but didn't realize just how many there were. I opened up one box and found almost 200! Along with those FQ's were miscellaneous scraps of all sizes. I also found 3 spools of thread, my tweezers for my serger, a container of garlic salt with no lid, 2 packages of cat food, the missing place settings for my silverware, a remote for a TV that I sold before I moved, a tube of chap stick, a pad of erasable typing paper (for pp'ing), 2 cat toys and her brush, a can of green beans, two unopened and warm cans of beer and a partridge in a pear tree.
 I still have 4 more boxes of fabric that dad packed to go. This is almost like buying the FQ's all over again. Now I need MORE shelving.

Jim's Gem 04-21-2011 01:03 PM

LOL!!! I sure hope that none of your fabrics got runied!!!!

DogHouseMom 04-21-2011 01:04 PM

Garlic with no lid? Oh my ... does the fabric now reek of garlic?

What an odd assortment of objects to find together in the same box. Couldn't help but think about the TV show I watched last night about the guys that buy storage lockers and have no clue what could be lurking in the boxes!

craftybear 04-21-2011 01:05 PM

Wow, have fun sorting thru all of the boxes and getting your fabric all organized

Airwick156 04-21-2011 01:09 PM

Your dad sounds like he packs like my husband does. With no rhyme or reason!!!

gunny148 04-21-2011 01:10 PM

Sounds like its all there...Marines pack like that too. Beer and greenbeans

amma 04-21-2011 01:11 PM

I am afraid to look today. That is another adventure, best saved for another time.

justwannaquilt 04-21-2011 01:15 PM

I know for most it doesn't sound like fun, but one day dad will be gone and you will NEVER forget the time Dad helped ya move!

My dad helped me move once however he didn't help me pack. If he had, I am sure unpacking would be much like your ordeal!

StitchinJoy 04-21-2011 01:16 PM

Rags? RAGS??!! Oh no he didn't!!!

Not really, but I did start craving spaghetti.

This is like a treasure hunt. The cat has to be thrilled.
LOL

lscho4jm 04-21-2011 01:22 PM

But, wasn't it an exciting find? Almost like Christmas, except you already owned all the presents. :-o

SueDor 04-21-2011 01:37 PM

What fun!

emerald46 04-21-2011 01:50 PM

But Christmas doesn't smell of garlic and cat food. I hope it all came out in the wash (the smell).
If it was dry cat food, at least maybe the garlic kept the mice and insects away! ;)

greenini 04-21-2011 01:59 PM

Just think, how exciting opening all those boxes are gonna be!

TonnieLoree 04-21-2011 02:17 PM

I decided to trudge on through and managed to get the other 4 boxes sorted. A box of Wheat Thins (stale now), 4 unmatched socks, a pair of undies, a bra, 2 pair of sweat pants, half-package of M & M's (still good!), 3 full sized quilt tops, 6 really hideous UFO's, my T-Mobile bill that I swore to them I never got, unopened mustard, ketchup and sweet gherkins, 2 seam rippers, 3 screw drivers, the power cord to my serger (!), another hand full of FQ's, 5 cones of thread, a shoe box full of trims, elastic and velcro, brand new package of batting for a Queen, some really awful polar fleece used to protect the pickles, 3 doggie coats that will fit rats (really, really small), and another iron. (Iron count, now I have 4.)

All in all, no fabrics were harmed. Nothing reeks of garlic or cat food. No, the boxes wern't marked :-( ; it was all a surprise to me. At least I have dinner and clean clothes to wear tomorrow.

Oh, well, Dad was just helping his little girl to move, and probably glad to be able to do it.

Your story is precious to me. I agree that it will bring you fond memories later in life.

Carron 04-21-2011 02:32 PM

justwannaquilt 04-21-2011 02:53 PM

LOL That puts a whole new meaning to "if it fits it ships"! Ships right to the new house via dads packing technique!

amma 04-21-2011 03:07 PM

ROFLMBO **Note to self** Do my own packing  :D:D:D

sewwhat85 04-21-2011 03:17 PM

that reminds me of the time my husband (helped) fold clothes. I came home from work and he had folded all the clean clothes.
They were stacked so nice on the couch. I picked up the first pile to put away and in it were a kitchen towel, dd underwear, his socks and 2 of my t-shirts. I asked him how he divided up the piles? He said he did it just like I did he folded and stacked one pile till it fell over then he would start another pile. LOL You just got to love them

LOL on the folding laundry. One time at dinner out, fa was laughing with the other dad about folding men's undershirts, you know, beaters. That there was no way to fold them, they looked messy however you did it.

"I" folded the laundry & I was very annoyed. I told him, I fold those for you & they are folded well. He & the other man just kept on laughing.

Next time I folded clothes. Yup, ya got it. I just stuffed them in his drawer. He complained to mom. Mom chewed me. I just said, "What?, Dad said they were impossible to fold."

I'm just glad your M&Ms & garlic were in dif boxes!

malindaann 04-21-2011 03:30 PM

When I was a kid, I had to fold my daddy's "beater" undershirts too. I just wrapped them around my hand, slid them off and considered them folded. Neither he nor mom said anything so I guess it was okay. haha

Jim's Gem 04-21-2011 03:35 PM

That's too funny!!!
Men!!!

Certain men should not be allowed around washers and dryers. I came home from work one day to find all of the clothes had been washed. Silk shirts with jeans, and whatever else could be shoved into the washer. :hunf: All of the clothes (3 loads, should have been 5 or 6) were laying on top of the bed unfolded. I just pushed them off on his side of the bed and went to sleep. He told me later I didn't appreciate his efforts (?), and never attempted to do laundry again. I think he did that on purpose.

When we moved out of NYC 12 years ago the company sent movers and this people wrapped the dishes in the drain still on it, the bathroom garbage, everything from the medicine cabinet, you name it. The boxes were not labeled either. It was fun to unpack.

dunster 04-21-2011 04:21 PM

On our first move, the movers packed my bowling ball inside the glass aquarium. And it didn't break! On the next move, the kitchen trash was packed and shipped. That must be one of their favorite things to do, as if you don't have enough trash when you start unpacking.
