I am probably the luckiest quilter in the world!!! My DH is a custom knifemaker so when the ole seam ripper gets a bit dull, out to the cutlery shop it goes for a new edge. I think the seam ripper was made to teach me patience, because I use it so often I have to keep reminding myself to be patient.

Have thought about wearing one around my neck many times over the years, but never figured how to get on a chain, string, etc. - No holes.
Any suggestions??? |
I remember a time before seam rippers (used long needles, safety pins, etc.) Thought I'd died and gone to Heaven when I got my first seam ripper. Then saw Billie Lauder on "Simply Quilts". She showed how to pick (break) every few threads in a seam, then turn the block over and gently pull the unbroken thread - Bingo, seam separated with no stretching, tearing, etc.
Ahhhhh.... life is good |
I have a ripper everywhere I work, be it sewing, handwork, or quilting. They don't always get as much exercise as they may like but they are nice quiet companions and are there when I need them.

On this same subject - how do you use your seam ripper?
Do you open the seam & run it under the threads or do you clip every few stitches on one side and pull the thread on the reverse side? |
If you are looking for a new seam ripper, try the one by Fons & Porter. It fits so nice in your hand. Ask me how I know :)

Wow, all of you are saying "seam ripper", as in you have ONE seam ripper. I must have about 10 of them stationed everywhere I might happen to sew. Am I the only one who utilizes them so often that I have to have multiples???

I had an all-day date with my seam ripper a few days ago ... glad it went it's way and I went mine!
|
Bummer!! I do that sort of thing a lot unfortunately. Can definitely relate. So sorry;hope you can go forward again soon.

Couldn't quilt without my trusty seam ripper.
