I like the black background. I wouldn't hesitate to mix and match.
Interesting how different fabrics make the same block look different.

I like the smaller ones the best. I agree they give more depth.

Are there more squares? Could you make another row on the bottom with bigger inside squares. One of those eye movement quilts.
