Are Dots Considered Feminine?

1 Attachment(s)
While I am waiting for vintage fabrics and embroidery pieces to come my way so that I can made my quasi-crazy quilt, I tried out a star block set this afternoon. I am fascinated with it! It is made by layering two squares of coordinating fabric and then cutting, sewing, cutting, sewing, etc. It results in 2 blocks that are the inverse of each other. My picture shows the prints that I used, and now I am going through my stash looking for other black and white prints.

My question is this: are polka dots considered feminine? Ideally, I would like this quilt to be gender neutral, but I am wondering if boys would maybe be less than thrilled with the dots. Please give me your opinion.

Thanks!

Dayle

I love your blocks.....I would consider it gender neutral. They would really make a striking quilt:)

Joy.lynn 02-04-2012 06:22 PM

Where did you get the pattern? Looks great.

irishrose 02-04-2012 06:27 PM

I think those are very masculine dots, but is the sashing pink? That would change things.

Very cool blocks. It must be fun to watch them come together.

nuetral gender? possibly adding flowery sashing (black/white or black/red combination) would add a bit of feminity to the quilt.

sewbeadit 02-04-2012 06:30 PM

I think the way they are now it is neutral but if you put something in black in there with a print it would depend on the next prints. I think only pink or purple dots are just for girls. I don't know a boy that would be happy with those, but the ones you have look great.

The pattern is in Fons and Porter Sept/Oct 2005. The blocks are called "Lucky Stars Blocks", and they are part of a wallhanging called "Witches Workshop Sampler". What I like about them is that there are no templates -- the cutting is freeform within restrictions, so the blocks look whimsical and are all different.

I have more different sizes of dotted fabric that I can use from my stash, but I want to be sure that they wouldn't be a turn-off to boys, so I am gathering opinions on that.

The color on my picture makes the red look a little pinkish. I am thinking of using some other bright colors for the strips, such as yellow, green, blue, etc., but I want the star parts to be black and white prints.

Oh Dayle I like these! Not at all feminine.:)

SWEETPEACHES 02-04-2012 06:55 PM

I like those. Can you post the instructions here?

Lori S 02-04-2012 07:07 PM

I don't think "girlie " when I look at them.

I see the "Lucky Stars" demo is Episode 205 and is shown on the Fons and Porter website.

IMO, Gender neutral..

par4theday 02-04-2012 07:58 PM

I vote boys would like dots.

beaqltr 02-04-2012 10:36 PM

I think dots are neutral. The color or pattern might make a difference.

I like your blocks. They would be good for a male or female.

dublb 02-04-2012 10:41 PM

I asked DS (he's 18) if these were feminine & he said yes.:( He would not like 'em. He said that it wasn't the dots yet he couldn't put his finger on what it was. Like I said before they don't look feminine to me.

Quiltaddict 02-04-2012 11:15 PM

I don't think dots are feminine, especially not in black and white. I love dots and think that your blocks are amazing.

AnnieH 02-04-2012 11:45 PM

It looks soooo good and def not feminine. Love the pattern. More pics as you go please. I'd love to make this one.

i've never heard of dots being feminine, many many guys like dots---there are plenty of guys out there though who would not want their boy to have the pink edges though- pink is still one of those colors that (manly men) through fits about if there is any hint of it in anything for (their boy)
great blocks! but if i was making a gender neutral quilt i would edge in purples, blues, greens, oranges, yellows---stay away from pink---and maybe it 's just my computer making it look pink and really it's red? red as long as it's not predominant is ok

16 year old son here says they are feminine, too.

Bev and Lisa,
Thanks for getting opinions from teenage guys -- that is what I need.

I love those blocks. Perhaps a more muted red would make them more acceptable to men.

ontheriver 02-05-2012 09:29 AM

great blocks, love the pattern. I think gender would depend more on the colors you used.

Doreen 02-05-2012 09:32 AM

Dots are qhat you make of them,. Some can be feminine depending on the other colors that you mix. Big bold dots can be masculine.

icon17 02-05-2012 09:39 AM

I think if the sashing was say yellow it could pass for man/women. But this is a wonderful Quilt block very Eye catching!

joyce888 02-05-2012 10:31 AM

I think the colors you're using would be considered neutral.

Holice 02-05-2012 10:39 AM

only color and prints would make it girl or boy.

toadmomma 02-06-2012 04:12 AM

Your blocks are really cool, they seem like they would be good for either.

Krystyna 02-06-2012 04:30 AM

No, not feminine. I think those stars are perfectly wonderful for boys. Can you share the pattern?

SueDor 02-06-2012 04:33 AM

I would say it depends on the color of fabric and pattern you use.

TanyaL 02-06-2012 04:59 AM

I have never seen a man wear a shirt with dots as the pattern unless he was gay.

silvam 02-06-2012 06:24 AM

The blocks are AWESOME - but in seeing them I thought Girl - sorry - but the pattern is awesome.

Glenda m 02-06-2012 06:32 AM

Love it! Looking at it makes me think of looking up at night and seeing stars all over.

quiltlin 02-06-2012 06:35 AM

I think it all depends on the colors. Your black/white/red is definitely a neutral and think it would be great for a boy!

Jean in Ohio13452 02-06-2012 07:05 AM

think the Blue or Dark Green or lime green or A rust/brown color would be masculine, and the pink, aqua, shades of purple, yellow would be more feminine ... The dots kinda look like stars and outer space.. so even metallic silver works..

SunlitenSmiles 02-06-2012 07:36 AM

the pokadots (even spaced evensized) are more girl.....................the uneven dots (different sizes different shapes no apparent spacing) are gender neutral............to me they are all beautiful, fabric is an awsome palette

Pieces2 02-06-2012 07:40 AM

The black/white dots keeps it gender neutral. I think its when you go with colored backgrounds that the fabric becomes more gender oriented.

onaemtnest 02-06-2012 07:50 AM

I really, really like the block and your choice of fabric design is stunning...sashing could make them less neutral depending on color choice.

Until your question I'd never thought of dots being feminine or masculine. I think sometimes I over think some things instead of just going for it? Not a criticism just pondering in my own thought processes.

gypsylady5 02-06-2012 09:28 AM

I love it. Dots are gender neutral and will be loves by either party. Where did you find the pattern? I might like to make it!

ksea 02-06-2012 09:58 AM

My DH says "That would be a girl quilt!"
