Sooooo... I was wondering which do you prefer- double binding or single binding on a non-childs quilt??
I have a quilt for my mom but I only have enough for a single binding..will it withstand less than normal wear?? |
I only use the double fold. One of my first quilts is well-loved and much washed. It is starting to show the wear in the binding. Had it been a single fold, it would be ratty by now I'm sure.

I only use double.
I always use double.
you might consider backing your single with muslin to give it some stability. Single fold does not wear well.
I only use double also...but if you don't have enough and don't mind extra bulk in the binding area, get a coordinating fabric and stitch it to the fabric you have then proceed with the double binding procedure, making sure that the extra fabric is enclosed in the inside where it's not seen. The extra bulk is created by the seam when you stitch the two fabrics together...it will help the bulk if you press the seam open...

I wouldn't think of using single binding!! After all the work I put into a quilt, I sure don't want it to start wearing out right away on the binding!
Only double for me!
I have only used double fold.
Double binding, so it will wear longer :D:D:D
I use double binding.
I have always used double binding that I make my self. I kind of like the look it gives. How would single binding work? Do you sew it on like double, but just fold over the single edge?

That tucking alone would make me stay far away from single fold. Too much like hemming, which I hate.
OMG! Thank you so much for asking this question! I had not given any thought to this topic at all!!
double for me too
Double!
I always use a double binding on quilts.
I'm with everyone else - double is all I'd attach (guess, you got that by now-hee hee). Have fun :-D
I use double binding all the time.
When making a large qilt, I only use double--but I also do lots of small decorative quilts. Just bound some 3" Christmas ornaments. I cut 1.25" strips for a single fold binding. I press the .25" hem in the strip before I sew it on. Once binding is sewn on,the hem is nice and crisp and then I sew the edge down either by hand or machine--depending on how quick I need it (I love to blindstitch hems--very soothing for me.)
The narrower, single binding is less bulky and more in proportion to my itty bitties. |
Definitely Double.
Definitely double...gives a really nice finish.
Double it is for me! It's longer lasting, and I like the feel of it on the edge of the quilt. 8-) Just feels "more finished" to me. :?
The first quilt I made, I took fabric from the back and tucked it up over the quilt to make the binding. I didn't know any "better." It is still fine - and that was 25 years ago. If you only have enuogh fabric for single binding and the person is careful, go for it!
Oh gee ----- I wish I had known this 15 quilts ago as I always used single binding. The reason being I'm terrible at mitered corners and can manage them reasonably with only a singe layer of fabric. Time to bite the bullet I guess and go with double and LEARN how to do a respectable corner. Are there any good tutorials on that???
Double for me, but not just for the wearability. It is so much easier to work with than trying to fold a single layer of binding. Try ironing that 1/4" fold evenly!!! Too much work. You can iron the whole thing in half in much less time and with much less frustration. I am frustrated just thinking about it
Only use double for everything - wallhangings, mug rugs, table toppers...etc
There was a tutorial on here not too long ago about stitching your binding with another color so it looked like a flange (do I have the right word??) when sewn onto the quilt. That looked really neat and would solve the problem of not enough fabric for a double binding.
double fold binding but will use single fold for doll quilts when I'm short on fabric. May in Jersey
A friend, when short, routinely adds a contrasting fabric to make it wider - then when she folds it, the fold is on the contrasting fabric and when she applies the binding - it gives the illusion of a "trim" between the binding and the quilt.
I use only double fold binding on all my binding work, except when making a quilt for a child. Then I make my own Double-Double binding. Cut lengths of fabric, on the bias, 2 times the width of a normal double fold binding. Fold that piece in the middle and stitch on both sides. Following that step, fold in the edges as in a double fold binding you buy. Makes a very strong finish for a child's quilt and since they are sometimes used as floor pallets or for games, it lasts longer.
I do double binding, but if all you have enough for is a single binding--I would use it. You can always replace in years to come if it does wear out.
I always use double binding.
Double for me.
I would recommend a double, that is a big wear point.
use mostly double find it easier occ will use single for a very small piece
One of my first, very early quilts I wrapped the backing to the front to from the binding. It's not a quilt we used often. This was in the 80's and there wasn't that much info about quilting and certainly no QB. I've learned alot in the past 20+years. I always use double binding now. I like the idea someone had about the double, double binding for kids quilts.

I prefer double binding, but use single binding for small projects.
