Something new to buy. Heading to Joanns tomorrow so see if they carry them. Thanks, always looking for new stuff.

Holy cow. Something new again from this grp. There's no end to what you guys come up with that amaze me. Now I can't say I've never heard of dbl. eye needle.

patdesign 08-10-2011 02:34 PM

Lacelady, thanks for the post of the stitch quality, I will definitely try this.:)

tmjennings 08-10-2011 03:45 PM

I have used two threads through one needle in some of my regular sewing such as denim. It gives the seam extra strength. No problem going through the machine but a larger needle is needed.

That is just like the part I had to have for my lawn tractor $2.64 + $4.65 shipping and nobody had the part locally had to order from manufacturer.

I hate it when that happens! I ordered a package of the needles from amazon for $6.77 with free shipping... but will probably be next week before I can play around with them... by the time I get home tuesday I'm going to be going through massive withdrawls! No computer and NO sewing machine!

Sandra in Minnesota 08-10-2011 06:02 PM

I have enough getting one needle threaded!!

quiltjoey 08-10-2011 06:09 PM

Does anyone have a picture/pictures or a website of the type of needle in this discussion? don't think I have ever seen one... thanks

raksmum 08-10-2011 06:54 PM

Sorry, I don't have any pictures but I have done this many times using the double eye needle. As an example, I have put green thread in the bottom eye and a red or gold metallic in the top when I have quilted Christmas things. I have never adjusted my tension and it worked just fine. It gives the quilting just a bit of shimmer when the solid thread color is underneath.
I use Schmetz.

Carron 08-10-2011 07:14 PM

Now I want to try this, the effects are fantastic.

ploverwi2 08-10-2011 07:25 PM

Yes, they do have a sewing machine needle with two eyes for top stitching and fancy stitches. I see that most fabric stores are selling them.

I took a class a few months ago on doing stained glass quilts with bias tape. My teacher had us use a double needle (two shafts) that had the needles far enough apart that we sewed down both sides of the bias tape at one time.
The needle is out in my studio and I'm too lazy to go out there now to look at the details (brand, spacing, etc).

This is a "double needle" not a "double-eye needle" but the effects of a double needle are really nice too. They look really nice when you are doing cross-hatching. The double eye needle is just one needle with two eyes so the two threads sew one on top of the other.

Ohhh...thanks for the clarification. Guess I was reading things wrong. Some of the posts make more sense now. That's what happens when multi-tasking. I was watching The Closer. :)

Thanks for the info.
Just had my lqs order for me. Said I was the first to ask for them!
We all need pictures when we get to play!

I still like that idea

After that, go fairly slowly.

I must live on the moon because i've never heard of this before. Thanks for the example. Do you know what number needle you used for this?

Olivia's Grammy 08-11-2011 11:47 AM

I check Joann's and Hobby Lobby and neither stores have the double eye needles. I was disappointed.

My time 08-11-2011 12:10 PM

Well it sounds as though you really don't need the double eye need if you have a needle with a big enough eye to hold two strands of thread. Have you tried this method yet? Have not so I am anxious to hear people's result.

You don't have to have the double eye but it does make the thread feed through evenly (with the same thread always being on the top). I hope that makes sense.

Yes it does I never thought of the thread not feeding evenly. Thanks for your reply.

Years ago when the denim idea was new, this was really popular as the heavier looking double thread had much more impact. It stood out and was very effective. Doubled red thread was most popular especially on blue jeans and wearing a red tee-shirt and red socks for casual wear. Choose your own shoes.
Or - just the red stitching on the jeans and a smallish red scarf around the neck. Don't forget to wear a top or you will get cold boobies. Just thought I'd mention that. Lol Gleniveve

Gleniveve 08-12-2011 07:40 AM

I have never found this to be a problem using both threads through the one eye of the needle. I have used it lots over the years with contrasting thread for effect. It used to be quite common many, many, many years ago. Boo Hoo, my age is showing --- again. Lol Gleniveve

I'm Intrigued! Think I'll give it a try!

Well, I tried it on a zigzag and I had to scoot the needle down just a tiny bit to get it to catch the top thread. I haven't yet tried a straight stitch... I will post pictures later when there is enough light in there to get a decent picture.

...oops lost the pictures...

My Bernina has two needles stuck together and you use it like one, but I have never done it. Maybe I will try it now. They are about 1/8 inch apart.
