Double wedding ring pattern question
Hello.. my nephew is getting married in July 2016 and I am playing around with the idea of a double wedding ring quilt for a gift. I have never made one but I am looking at the templates that are available and those give me courage to go for it.
My question is about the templates. Have any of you used the templates? The ones that I have seen don't call out dimensions of the individual pieces. And that is what I am wondering I would like it to look a little scrappy and thought a jelly roll would be nice because then I wouldn't have to worry because the fabric will all work together. I know I will have to buy yardage for the background, but would jelly rolls work for the rings? Please let me know what you think Thanks |
In Judy Niemeyer's video she uses a 4" wide piece of fabric for cutting her rings, so my guess is that a jelly roll would not work with the templates from Creative Grids (assuming that you wanted to cut the entire ring from one piece of fabric). It might work with another template set. Her is the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0pjTVmoz8U

I"m using one that shows a pieced arc but sew strips together and then cut with the curved template. I got sidetracked and still have more to make one day. I will have to get my mind around it again when I do.

I know Marti Michel has a set of templates for the DWR. I almost purchased it after seeing it at the Atlanta show. IT was a unique quilt in that the center almond shape was not white, it was a paisley. Beautiful. Each piece would be cut individually. There are also some paper piecing directions on the web. If you start looking at them, you'll notice, some make circles and some make squared circles. The Marti Michel one makes truer circles. So it would be personal preference.

dunster - thank you for the link I will have to watch more closely when I get home, but the templates that I saw had several individual smaller blocks to make up that arc
nativetexan - I will look around for what you are talking about, but it could be similar to the Judy Niemeyer one that dunster provided a link to toverly - thanks for the tip I will google Marti Michel and see what I can find out :) |

I've watched Eleanor burns use her method on her show. She puts her shoes on line free if you want to look for it |
The quick curve ruler by sew kind of wonderful is great. I just took a class and it makes piecing a dwr so much easier. I will probably make another one using this ruler. I recommend it highly.

This company has a pattern called Metro Rings. You have to buy the ruler, but the ruler also makes other patterns. They have a book that will be coming out this month that uses the ruler and has many patterns. They are also on youtube. http://sewkindofwonderful.com/
Sorry to repeat, while I was looking them up Mike's girl commented to them!! Glad to hear someone else likes them too! |
I made a DWR quilt for my daughter using the Sharlene Jorgensen templates. I cut out all of the pieces and put them in a pizza box and when I got a few minutes to sew I got an arch finished. It went fast and it was fun. One good thing with the small template pieces you can use different fabrics in the arch. Good luck on your adventure-I am sure you will do fine.
|
I used John Flynn's acrylic template. I didn't finish the quilt because it was too much piecing and sewing on the arc had to be perfect. I probably can go back now that I am a much better quilter during the last 15 years, but I have no desire. Too many more fun charity quilt to make.

I took the Craftsy class and bought the DWR Craftsy kit which I have not used yet. Class was very good but I like the looks of round rings better than the squarish ones and I decided I would like to use acrylic templates. I like the non slippage feature of the Creative Grid templates and they can be used with Judy Neimeyer patterns (on my to-do list someday) so I bought them. The DWR Craftsy kit only has 7 different sections(fabrics) in each 1/4 ring and CG has 8. CG has the markings for the individual sections but not the templates. Recently, there was a post here Downton Abbey DWR (do an advance search) and that person just adjusted the CG to use the 7 fabrics. It is beautiful and now I'm anxious to start mine. I have also seen on YouTube the CG used and the 1/4 rings done in solid fabric rather than pieced. Easier and lovely too. Good luck!

I made a DWR quilt with the Sharlene Jorgensen templates. I used a jelly roll for the arches because I wanted it scrappy. I think it took 2 jelly rolls with some left over. I found it very difficult, but I did get the top finished. I made the little pieces that fit between the footballs and arches all the same color. I thought it would be easier--it wasn't. I don't want to discourage you, and it turned out very pretty, but I think I had a few more grey hairs by the time it was finished. I need to sandwich it and quilt it (bought stencils for the quilting). Right now it resides with my other UFO's and watches me work on other projects and makes me feel guilty. It is a very nice wedding gift, but personally, I am keeping mine for myself. I have a lot of work invested and I think that make the value at least $1000.00. I would post a picture but I don't know how.

I've made four of these . . .here's two. I used Jelly Rolls in all four quilts . . .and the Quick Curves Ruler as well as the QCR pattern, Metro Rings. I found it rather difficult the first time . . .but the other three went together in under a week.

Good luck. What a nice gift.

Sorry to repeat, while I was looking them up Mike's girl commented to them!! Glad to hear someone else likes them too! That was my suggestion. This ruler is made for jelly rolls. I've made three and they are quick, easy and look great. We'll worth the money. I purchased the other template set - I started one 8 years ago and it sits in its box and mocks me. |
ClairVoyantQuilter - your quilts are gorgeous! thank you so much for sharing
Thank you all so much for your input! My big hope is to be able to make each of my sons one when they get married (IF they get married :) ) I will be using my nephew as a guinea pig to see if it would even be possible susie-susie-susie I have not doubt the quilt has a value of $1000 perhaps more!! If you figure out how to post a picture I would love to see it |
I have a book called
http://www.amazon.com/Rings-That-Bin.../dp/0967789443 It is supposed to be easier that way. But I am looking at one made with a cutting die like Sizzix Double Wedding Ring or an Accuquilt die. I have not done the Quilt in a Day one but I am sure it is easier and I think it is appliqued. https://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponli...lay.asp?i=2052 |
Jorgensen and burns are great patterns....or if you have, or know someone,-- the GO dies are great. Ebony love has a tute on you tube showing how to assemble the rings....that seems to be the toughest part, but her tute is good...she uses GO, but template cut pieces would work too.....use it as a leaders/enders....not so intense that way....I would like to try one too...
|
I made one years ago using a template that I don't remember the name right off hand. Last year I have made one using my GO dies and followed the tute by Ebony Love. Ebony's tute was so easy to follow. Like Geri B stated, you could use any template and follow Ebony's tute. I WILL be making another DWR sometime this year or next - it was that easy. I never thought I would say that after doing my first one!

Please let me know what you think Thanks One thing to keep in mind before you buy templates: the smaller the rings, the more you will have to make of them. The pattern I bought with the Craftsy kit had large rings, about 20" I think, and required only 42 rings for a king size quilt. My Creative Grid templates make rings just over 17", so I had to sew an additional 14 rings for the same size quilt. I believe Marti Michell's templates make similarly sized rings; Sharlene Jorgenson's templates are for 15" rings; and I believe the Accuquilt Go rings are about 12". (These sizes are for a complete ring, the first one in each horizontal and vertical row; of course, the rows are completed by partial [smaller] rings.) In case it might help anyone, I posted the steps I followed for my quilt, using the CG templates, in the Tutorials section. Daffy |
Have you thought about using the fusible foundations? Check it out here http://www.quiltsmart.com/khxc/index...bleweddingring You can use jelly rolls with this method

Sorry, but what do shoes have to do with a DWR? Confusion here.

I made a DWR last year when my daughter got married. I used a Judy Neimeyer pattern with the coordinating Creative Grids template set. Lots of work, but good results for this newbie. If I ever make another one I would do it this way again.
|
Paper-piece it. There is a free pattern online http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patte....html?idx=6913 (just google it) that makes it so easy. I did one last year for a wedding present and it turned out so nice. It was queen size and the rings were all scraps, I only purchased the background fabric and the backing.

I made one last year, well used a double ring in the quilt, I added hearts and hugs and kisses blocks to the quilt to add interest and uniqueness. Just like the couples uniqueness!!

Check out the Bali Wedding Star by Judy Niemeyer paper pieced - I purchased mine from Amazon - sorry it won't let me post pics tonight.
HINT: keep all your pieces organized once you cut them out, it was easy to get mixed up. I put them all in their own zipped locked bag and noted on the outside which pieces were inside. |
Doesanyone else remember how John Flynn did his DWR back 'in the day'? He basically sewed a straight row with squares. The he took in so much at each seam where the squares met.
|
My great-grandmother left me her pattern for the double wedding ring quilt. Her advice to me was to use those scraps of fabric, so they could have a home. I've never made one of specific colors. I have made several over the years....one from my children's clothing once I had enough shirts. Was a gift to my mother, and yes, she cried.

This is beautifulllllllll.....!

Inklingo has loads of different wedding quilt ideas and would make this project easy to do with the option of selecting different size pieces to use for the arc. I started one a few years with the templates and switched to Inklingo halfway thru and it was so much quicker, you just need a printer.

http://www.freespiritfabric.com/grap...erys/t97_1.pdf I used these free templates to do mine.

I made my first double wedding ring last year; I used the paper piecing; it was awesome and everything fit perfectly. Here I a youtube link too, to Shari Jorgenen's video on how to make one using her templates. I did not use hers but she has some extremely good suggestions on the procedure; the one video on how to actually assemble it was most helpful. She also has a video on how to bind it.
