What color background would yu guys use for a dark red and white Dresden Plate? Thanks!

kathy 02-07-2011 07:26 AM

black sounds good

sueisallaboutquilts 02-07-2011 07:28 AM

I don't think I'd like black for that pattern. What are the choices, if any??
Could you post a pic?

raptureready 02-07-2011 07:33 AM

What I planned to do with it always helps me in determining the colors I use. If I'm making something for someone specific, I'd use colors that they have in their home. If I'm making it to donate for a sale I try to use more generic, "could be used most anywhere", type of colors. If it's for myself then I use what I like.
If you're red and white are solids you could use a print that incorporates a little of each color for the background.

Not at home now so no camera:( No choices, just wanting ideas. Thanks

CoriAmD 02-07-2011 07:35 AM

would have to see to be sure, but I am thinking something in the beige family might work

sueisallaboutquilts 02-07-2011 07:41 AM

I like what Raptureready said. I just can't picture black on a traditional Dresden. That's why I wanted to see a pic of your fabrics for the plates.
Maybe I just have trouble thinking outside the box lol :D

nwm50 02-07-2011 07:44 AM

are your red & white solid?? If so , how about an softer small flowered prints for the background?

WonkyWanda 02-07-2011 07:45 AM

I agree, black!

The fabrics are white on white and red on red.

clem55 02-07-2011 08:02 AM

Since you are using a tone on tone, I'd go with a pretty patterned background, maybe a floral or paisley.

erstan947 02-07-2011 08:08 AM

I think a cream/tan fabric might work. Dark enough tan that the white will stand out against it.

I agree--something ecru or camel colored.

Annaquilts 02-07-2011 08:20 AM

Creme or if the red doesn't blend in then the black.

millivanillisask 02-07-2011 08:24 AM

deep burnt red

millivanillisask 02-07-2011 08:25 AM

sewwhat85 02-07-2011 08:58 AM

cream or black

millivanillisask 02-07-2011 09:00 AM

dark cream

grendelskin 02-07-2011 12:04 PM

I think this would look very striking on a dark background - maybe a dark grey or black-on-grey; alternately, a dark, dark red would make it "pop" too.

fabric lover 02-07-2011 02:01 PM

(dark) purple goed nice with dark red and white, but it might take some 'courage' LOL.

stitchinwitch 02-08-2011 04:23 AM

How about a red and white with a aTOUCH of black print

cherrio 02-08-2011 05:04 AM

maybe a lt to med grey

thseabreze 02-08-2011 05:38 AM

I think I would try white

mimistutz 02-08-2011 05:52 AM

I agree I think it will depend on where it's going. I think I would take it to the fabric store and lay it against a few, just remember to step back several feet to look at it. Let us see what you decide.

Riversong 02-08-2011 05:56 AM

Cream or light tan...,probably a mottled fabric or a tiny tone on tone print

Riversong 02-08-2011 05:59 AM

I just noticed this...look at my avatar,,,it has a red and black together with a creamy background,on a couple of blades..that gives you an idea

Mkotch 02-08-2011 06:37 AM

Navy blue? Hunter green?

nanac 02-08-2011 07:23 AM

nativetexan 02-08-2011 07:30 AM

Rose L 02-08-2011 08:44 AM

I would use a silvery-gray.

MamaYitu 02-08-2011 12:34 PM

I made these as family gifts with the family name embroidered in the middle for Christmas this year. I used a an ecru or beige with tiny white decoration as background. It went well with about any of the colors I used on the plates. And everyone seemed to like them a lot.

Dolphyngyrl 02-08-2011 12:53 PM

black, love your avatar by the way, huge fan of miniature schnauzers

Tweety2911 02-08-2011 01:31 PM

How about a red/white/black tiny print?
