Eagle Scout quilt

I want to make a quilt for my grandson who just became an Eagle Scout. Any ideas? I thought of embroidering an eagle or doing an applique block of one in the center but am lost for how to do the rest of the quilt. Any suggestions??

Hi there. I too have #1 (of 2) DGS becoming Eagle with ceremony in Dec!! Sad thing is, he lives in China. But his mom has requested, as a surprise, a video of special folks congratualting him, etc.
I didn't make him a quilt but found some beautiful Eagle pillow panels. Have his done. Did it up in a wallhanging & I quilted around the bird. I'm going to make his bro one too (he'll become Eagle next yr) & am thinking about making my son (making Eagle many yrs ago) & son-in-law (he's a Scout Leader) one too. I have #1 a grad quilt all done & am working on #1 DGDs, both next spring… Then next yr, #2 DGS, then very next yr #2 DGD…. I wish I could post pic but for some reason I can't get pics to load….
You know this is such an achievement!! FYI: only 1 out of every 10 boys that sign up for Scounting, make it to Eagle!!! Sure will look good on a college entrance/job resume. My avatar is pic of them taken 4 yrs ago but they are now so big.
Good luck in a your decision…...

I like both of the ideas here, applique or embroider an eagle and using panels of eagle fabric. I bought some neat fabric with eagles on it when on an Alaskan cruise. Unfortunately, it also has bears and fish in the pictures, so it wouldn't work for your purpose. Fons and Porter have an eagle applique in their quilts of valor section.

Google Novelty fabric/eagle. I found a lot of fabric for my DH for cars and pin ups. Just ordered some Sunday so should get here tomorrow. Hart Fabrics.com have a lot of novelty.

I made a quilt for a friend's son who made Eagle scout. I found a panel of an eagle soaring over some mountains. I used it as a base for a twin quilt. The rest was a double Irish chain with the panel sitting where the foot of the bed would be. (The blue is water and fish for being on the swim team. The brown and some tan are cave pictures and such for studying to be a social studies teacher.) Not too good at attaching pictures, but will try.

Wow! Krafty14. That is an incredible quilt. The pattern is perfect with the fabrics. I love the blue piece.

Congratulations to all of the Eagles!...and to their families.

What a great idea! Love the way it turned out. Thanks for sharing.

I made an Eagle Scout quilt for my nephew using Eleanor Burns pattern here: http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponline/book/1370. Relatively easy and I used the Boy Scout fabric. Congratulations!! Becoming an Eagle Scout is a great thing! It is the only thing a boy can do in his youth that he can use on his resume forever. :)

How hard would it be to replicate some of the ribbons he's won for different skills? If you are lucky enough to have an embroidery machine, you could make a nice one

I made tee shirt quilts for my boys using their scout troop tee shirts and school tee shirts. I added the badges for all the ranks of Boy Scouts including the Eagle badge. Eagle scout is a wonderful thing for the boys to have earned.

This site has some Scout fabric.

I will be trying to make an Eagle Scout quilt for my grandson who is getting close. A year or so ago I ordered some Boy Scout Fabric and I plan to print pictures of him from some of the ceremonies and such that he has participated in. Not sure yet what pattern I will use but I'm leaning towards Warm Wishes. Please show us what you do.

A friend messaged me about your quest. She knew I'd made one quilt for an Eagle Scout and I have plans for a few more. My husband had been Scout master and when I showed him a fabric line with Scout designs a few years ago he had me get some. It's easier to give you the link to my thread about the quilt than it is to post all the pictures for details. Here is the finished quilt. I made it last fall and there are two more boys in the troop ready for their Court of Honor, so I need to get two more done. I'll probably use my same pattern. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t234403.html

I checked out Fons and Porter. In your opinion, is that the eagle I'm looking for? I'm thinking it is, with the emblem in the center. I downloaded the pattern anyway.

Swannie 10-23-2014 07:53 AM

Which site has the scout fabric, please?

SheriR 10-23-2014 10:27 AM

I googled Boy Scout fabric and found this:

I made this for my eagle scout. It's a paper piecing pattern.

These are all such wonderful ideas. My late DFIL was a scout master for many years. My husband loved his scout years but stopped short of Eagle Scout.
Thank you SheriR for the fabric link.

My Oldest Son became an Eagle Scout back in 1998. Since I had 3 boys I became involved too. and so did my husband... 13 + years in our Pack and Troop . at that time there was a 2% ratio of Boys becoming Eagle Scouts.... Ours was a very Active OUTDOOR Troop with Camping and Canoeing , Service Projects, and Merit Badges... They went to a International Camping Weekend on Pelee Island Canada in Lake Erie, my husband and Oldest Son..., Camping in the mountains of New York, And a 50 Hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA. Also Order of the Arrow,
So any fabric that has a Theme that has to do with any of his Merit badges would be nice to use as borders.... Give him a a Scout salute for a Great Job !

You could ask his leader for a badge and have a copy of it blown up applique the pieces together and then applique it on the quilt in a block.

Congrats on the Eagle Scout in the family. I have an Eagle Scout DGS too. But I would suggest you ask him first. I wanted to make mine one, but when I asked him, he said "ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!". I didn't get a reason, but wasn't going to work that hard if he wasn't going to appreciate it. I did make him a quilt for his bedroom with matching valances. He said he likes that more.

tinliz 10-24-2014 06:32 AM

Saw this on Kaye Wood's site today http://www.kayewood.com/item/Blaze_o...llhanging/2132. I have too many UFO's to start another quilt now, but would like to make it for my grandson who is a falconer.

Swannie 10-24-2014 09:08 AM

Love that wall hanging! Bought the pattern. Thanks.

Brandi 10-24-2014 03:45 PM

My grandson is going into the Webelos and have a lot of patches that is has received. I bought a red boy scout blanket at the scout store and I am going to put the patches on the blanket. It will be something he can keep and I will add to it.

Grammie Sharon 10-24-2014 06:07 PM

The is scouting faabric. If you google it I'm sure you can find it. I have some with merit badges, camping, eagles, etc. Congratulations it is quite an honor. My son made Eagle scout. Both myself and my husband at different times were the scoutmaster of our trip. I enjoyed it very much. It was an honor helping these boys succeed.
