I am using an old cutting mat. I have some heavy duty scissors that cut it pretty good. I'll use the tiles when the mat is all used up. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds good. As soon as I'm done using an 8" stack of plastic canvas that I bought on a garage sale for $1, I'll give it a try.

i buy those plastic grids for needlework and such. i cut them to size and cover with fabric.

That's what my first purse pattern called for, and I used them while looking for something a little stiffer. It probably depends on your personal preference (how rigid you want your base to be) and the size of the bag.

I buy kitty litter in large plastic "bottles". I keep the "sides" for using in purse bottoms (Have only made 3). It worked great....put in a "pocket" so it could be removed to wash bags.
