What about an extra large Log Cabin or Court House Steps...?

Carpenters star is a great idea for a king sized quilt and would go together quickly if you make your block size (HST and whole square blocks) 8" or bigger. Plan on the mattress size for the center blocks part and borders to increase the size to drop on each of the sides. Consider whether you want enough quilt at the top to tuck the pillows under or have it just reach the top of the mattress because you put your pillows on top of the quilt when the bed is made.

Disappearing nine patch is great and if you want a theme you can make the ib block that is dominant in that theme or fabric. Easy and quick.

A Circle of nine is always pretty and you get to feel like real designer.

BQ 1 by Maple Island quilts is my "go to" favorite. individual blocks can finish at 18 inches so wouldn't take many for a king size.

I was fine with the old store-bought comforter that we've been using; however, as it was 109 degrees yesterday and since we have upper windows without shades in our bedroom (10-foot ceilings), I got fabric and blackout fabric to make drapes. Well, as happens any time you do anything around the house, the drapes don't match anything in the room. So we're going to paint the bedroom. Of course, the bathroom is en suite, so it will need to be painted too! I'd like to make a king-sized quilt for our bed. Something easy that doesn't look easy. Something that doesn't take me five years to finish. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Check out some of the older blocks that consist of HST and squares. Find one that is maybe 8 pieces by 8 pieces (such as Carpenter's Wheel). Make it 80" x 80" ie. 8 ten inch blocks by 8 ten inch blocks. Then finish out in matching borders.

Any medallion quilt would look great. A paper pieced Mariner's compass, Lone Star, carpenter's wheel, ...
Any big block would make a nice medallion. Then you could do borders of different colors and widths.
I would make the center no larger than about 45 - 50" so that the quilt could be used on a smaller bed.
Easy would be Amish (large square with different colored borders, and setting triangles - can be set on point).
