Yellow brick road is easy & works as a scrappy quilt. For the rail fence, be careful with color so it doesn't end up looking like swastikas.

So sorry to hear about your brother-in-law ugly ugly disease cancer. Saying a prayer for him I definitely know prayers are answered. I had total thyroidectomy in July with cancer on one lobe, so far everything is clear, I gave everything over to God to handle and he has so far.
Now for quilting, I was going to suggest The Quilter'sCache.comfor some good patterns, they are free for downloading, I just made three square in a square blocks for our local guild's cancer quilt to be raffled off at our annual 4th of July on "Tough Enough to wear Pink" night at the rodeo, when all cowboys and participants and the crowd is asked to wear pink, hopefully we can sell a lot of tickets and donate the funds to our local org. for Relay for Life. Also an easy quilt Log Cabin, I made a king size in about two weeks and worked too, for a dear friend's 70th birthday last year. I was checking my other emails, besides this one and came across an easy looking quilt but may require too much fab. depending on how large you want it to be. go to the Fons and Porter newsletter dated today March 13, 2010, [email protected] look at the pretty quilt made entirely with large blocks.

I make a lot of prayer quilts for my church and many of them are the D9P which goes fast and I always try to use my main fabric to match the recipients likes or hobbies. You can look up the pattern on google and it is so simple and turns out really nice. Sorry about your BIL, I lost my brother, mom and dad to cancer and many extended family. It is so sad. I had a week to get a quilt done for a raffle for a cancer patient. I found some great cheater fabric at Walmart, that looked like pieced blocks in gorgeous autumn jewel colors with gold gilding and I used it as a two yard piece, with two borders. I made it in one night, got it quilted in a day at the LQS (we can rent time on her HQs), and put the binding on in a day. Very easy, and quick and I got lots of compliments...most not even realizing it was a cheater. Cost me less than $40 to make and $60 to quilt.

The fabric I used was made by Fabric Traditions and Joanns is now carrying some of the line. I saw it last week, some mixed in with the calicos, and some with the Legacy. They have one in a gorgeous China Blue with coordinating fabrics. You would just need two yards of the pattern that looks like it was pieced, and two yards of border print.

NOTE: one thing to check is that if you want fabric that looks pieced, be sure the print is very straight on the grain. If not, the printed blocks won't be straight across and that could be noticible.

There is also a brown/black/gold paisley with gold highlights that would also make a great cheater quilt, and it has coordinates too.

Call your local quilters to see if someone will donate their services for your brother's benefit or charge a reduced cost and have them do an over all pattern. It is quick and easy for them to do so with a fast turn around.

What I find that is important for a quilt in a raffle, is that the quilt be beautiful to look at. Most who will bid on it or buy tickets, are not looking at the work involved and they don't have the appreciation for it as another quilter would. They will see beautiful fabric that will look great in their home.

I'm very sorry to hear of your brother's illness. Never give up hope and help him live a wonderful life full of love and joy.

Hang in there! My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and into the bone it went. She is doing great now in her 5th year. Doctor said it would not be unusual for her to make it to 15 years.

I am so sorry about your brother-in-law. My prayers are with you. This website has some nice "charity quilts" that are quick and easy to make. You might want to take a look.
