In the quilt world, she is an absolute jewel. Her books are so easy to follow and her patterns and methods of construction are just the best. Her addition of oddments of history and her own family history make wonderful reading and make you feel like you have known her forever and she is your friend. Even the addition of recipes are great. I have made her lemon/raisin scones several times.

Me too!!!

Me, three! When I first saw her show, I laughed at her throwing fabric over her shoulder.......now I watch it every chance I get! (And my DH knows not to interrupt me while watching her)

mcdaniel023 10-30-2011 03:59 AM

I learned to quilt from her tv shows. I have several books.
She and Kaye Woods are still my favorites.

In spite of the sugary style, Eleanor Burns conveys an appreciation for the rural women in our heritage. She is genuine in her admiration for her ancestors, and the information she shares makes me reflect on the gifts and talents of the women in my family who have gone before me.

When I quilt, I feel connected to my grandmothers, and Eleanor Burns promotes that feeling. The only thing that makes me feel more connected than quilting is carrying water (literally, not figuratively).

I have seen heron tv and love the lightness she adds to the craft. Her patterns are very straight forward .

labtechkty 10-30-2011 04:41 AM

Love her!

homecaregiver 10-30-2011 04:54 AM

I met her 2 weeks ago at a quilt show in Lincoln, NE while visiting there. She is as nice in person as on her shows. I chatted with her for a few minutes and she was giving out tote bags and was signing them so I got one of those. She has eyes that seem to be always smiling. She indulged in picture taking with some of the people who stopped by her booth.

I was fortunate enough to take a class in Paducah that she taught and it was fabulous. She is so down to earth and what a sense of humor. She had us laughing constantly while learning great quilting techniques. I DVR her shows and enjoy the background information she gives on the quilts. It really helps you feel connected to older family quilters. I love that her books give the information for any size you want to make.

Rose Marie 10-30-2011 05:09 AM

She is so generous with her videos and instructions they are free on her website.
She is in touch with what we need as quilters. When you watch a video she supplies all the information needed so you can make it without the pattern.
Her rulers are amazing for making accurate HST and flying geese yet she also includes instructions on how to cut without her rulers.

joycecil 10-30-2011 05:15 AM

Guess I'll check her out.

veryvirginia 10-30-2011 05:26 AM

I have met Eleanor Burns, bought her books, made her quilts and watched her shows whenever and wherever I cn find them. She is a hoot! She is a very sweet person with a sense of humor. I understand why quilters keep quilting when she clues you in with bits of history here and there. She is an icon in the quilting world and for a very good reason. She loves what she does.

didi 10-30-2011 05:33 AM

I love her books {have serveral}and hope to meet her some day.

Caswews 10-30-2011 05:36 AM

Eleanor is a good lady and has a great teaching technique! To overcome all she had to, and build the empire with her kids helping her, she is great !! love her techniques and books as well !

happystitchermm 10-30-2011 05:43 AM

I was ona bus trip last spring and they told us we were to meet Eleanor Burns in person in Paducah. When we got to Paducah, she was teaching a class and did not know anything about the meeting. She came out of her class for 15 min and talked to us on the bus and signed anything we wanted. She has me hooked from now on.

Veronica 10-30-2011 05:50 AM

I love her, she's fun and teaches you how to make great quilts.

dottientx 10-30-2011 06:10 AM

I'm happy to read so many love her. She may be a great teacher and a lovely person but I can't stand to listen to her programs. She acts like she's talking to a bunch of 1st graders who haven't a brain one and is talking like we're at our first day in school. We're adults, not children so talk to us like we're adults. Even the way she tosses her scraps of fabric over her shoulder is not for me. I hate it that she makes me feel this way but that's the way she affects me. I'm sorry Eleanor that you affect me that way but no thanks! I may be missing a lot but not when I end up feeling frustrated like she makes me feel.

NancyMaria 10-30-2011 06:13 AM

I met Eleanor at a quilt show and she autographed a book of hers that I purchased. She is just as patient, kind and sweet in person as she is n her show. Truly a lovely lady.

Stitchnripper 10-30-2011 06:14 AM

I love Eleanor Burns. I have a couple of her quilting books. I have watched her shows on TV when we could get them. Now I watch her free on her website. She has taught me so much, and I do enjoy the history in her shows, but haven't read any books by her on the topic.

Jackie Spencer 10-30-2011 06:14 AM

I really like her. Used to watch her on TV but dont get it anymore. Have you been to her shop in Paduca Ken. Its just down the street from the hotel where they hold AQS quilt show.

dottientx 10-30-2011 06:21 AM

Golly, but now I feel like a grinch! I'm the only one among all of you lovely gals who feels differently about Eleanor Burns. I was just reading more of your replies and read where one gal refers to her presentation as 'sugary'. Maybe that's what I don't like. My head hangs low but it's still how I feel. Sorry! sniff, sniff.

Morag 10-30-2011 06:22 AM

I have not read her books but I have read other historical books of people (women mostly) from Tennessee and West Virginia and Virginia and their quilts!

I like her instructions but do not like her voice..I feel that she is talking down to me as if I were a 5 year old!!!

MS quilter 10-30-2011 06:23 AM

She is a great teacher and when I found my self standing by her in Paducah one night, she was a delight in person. I enjoy her techniques and her shows - funny.

Cats n Quilts 10-30-2011 06:25 AM

I love Eleanor Burns and I have that book and several others of hers. Yes, it has inspired me. I have one quilt lined up to start after the holidays.

jetmaio 10-30-2011 06:26 AM

Eleanor Burns is the reason I quilt. Quilt in a Day after all is what I wanted to do!!!!!!!

Think that quilt took me months to complete and no one helped clean up my floor as I was quilting.

Think she's terrific.

craftymatt2 10-30-2011 06:30 AM

I have enjoyed Eleanor Burns for years, she is so sweet and humble, i have many of her books, and love her log cabin books, and her techniques, she makes it look so very easy.

Jeananne 10-30-2011 06:36 AM

I love Eleanor! I met her last year at the Houston show and she is just as sweet and personable as she seems! I have made many of her quilts and her directions and tips are great!

sawsan 10-30-2011 06:36 AM

I love Eleanor Burns, not intresting in history but she makes her class if (i would say) especial, easy, and she admaire what she makes like quilting is her blood.
I am sorry I had no books of hers

SandyMac 10-30-2011 06:37 AM

She is one of the best.Love how her family is so involved.Have learned a lot from her ,want to do a barn quilt but like the way her sister did hers.I think she called it laverdar farms .Sandy

Deborahlees 10-30-2011 06:39 AM

Her pattern books are excellent, very very detailed instructions....do watch her PBS shows, and yes I also do not like her voice and when she throws her scraps on the floor, that action drive me NUTS !!!!!!!!!

Mary T. 10-30-2011 06:44 AM

I really believe that Eleanor has done so much for the quilting world. Her "quilt in a Day" books helped many new quilters, (My 12 year old took a workshop and in a day she had completed the top for a Single Irish Chain lap quilt. She was hooked!)
I have attend two workshops at Eleanor's Classroom/shop in Calif. and she is so down to earth. Love her!!

gramarraine 10-30-2011 06:45 AM

I love Eleanor Burns. I have met her twice and she was very nice both times. I think she is a very gifted quilter and teacher. All of the patterns I have used are very easy to follow.

fishhavengirl 10-30-2011 06:49 AM

I learned how to make log cabin quilts from her. She's a true pioneer in the quilting world. She has the ability to take a complicated pattern and make it easy to understand. If it weren't for her I don't think we would be "Stripping" today. She's fabulous and especially love her book Victory Quilts 1940's Sampler Quilts. Long story short she took the fear out of quilting for me.

colwoods 10-30-2011 06:52 AM

I have met her and taken two of her classes. We have had her as a visiting instructor twice at our guild retreats. Her classes are wildly popular and always fill. She is a lot of fun and very nice.

dls 10-30-2011 07:08 AM

My very first class project was based on an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day tablerunner.

WisWis 10-30-2011 07:22 AM

I have become an Eleanor Burns fanatic-always watching her videos on the computer.

Emmy Sue 10-30-2011 07:34 AM

My very first quilt was a Log Cabin with the directions found in a magazine article about Eleanor Burns. Have many of her books and met her several years ago. She's a great teacher with a wonderful personality.

ajohn52 10-30-2011 07:37 AM

Watching her shows on local PBS is what convinced me that I too could learn to quilt. She made it look so easy. I was able to take a class with her when she came to Lincoln to teach at our Comm. College a few years back. She is such a nice person. Sadly, she is no long shown on our local PBS station. Miss her shows and sense of humor. She returned to Lincoln last week I think it was but I wasn't able to attend. She came to the International Quilt Museum here in Lincoln.

Wonnie 10-30-2011 07:42 AM

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people that just don't get into history and I think she's aware of that. She gives you just enough to make her quilts more interesting and to point out their origin but what she does give you historically is enough to spur you on to further research if you are interested in doing so.
