Most of her newer books have some history in them.
Victory Quilts is about WWII
Underground Railroad is about the slaves and the 'underground railroad'
and others.....
Great reading and inspirational.

When I did pick up various quilting shows on TV I particularly like to see EB as guest on Simply Quilts, etc. I no longer get any of those shows. Her methods are straight forward and easy for me to follow. The only one of her books that I have is the one about the Underground Railroad. The directions are easy to follow and the pictures are right on. I've read that the story portrayed is not actually true, but that doesn't matter to me. I love the story.

I like her and I think she is a good teacher.

The stories are in her patterns. You learn as you sew. Ipod of the '70's.

I have briefly met her, and can tell you that she is the most genuine, kind, and nice person that you can meet. She is generous with her time, talents, and gives so much to the quilting community. Her books have saved me from some scary beginner problems, and has eased me into confidence with my quilting. I admire her for her past, her dedication to her followers, and her attention to detail for patterns in history. I can thank her for my introduction into the world of quilting. As a truely beginning quilter I went on my first LQS quilt run, and found that I was totally hooked. I entered my completed run sheet at the Quilt in a Day shop, and (surprise!) won the prize gift basket. It contained everything I needed, and more, to get started! She probably has no idea of who I am, or the impact that she has made to my life. I wouln't be surprised if her contributions to quilting haven't touched many more lives too. I am forever grateful.

I like Eleanor Burns-she came to Quilting Around Chataqua 2 years ago. Very good show and very nice person. Her sister Pat comes to our quilt quild and shows her quilts and gives a great talk. They are originally from Zelianople,Pa.

josi49 10-30-2011 03:11 PM

My very first quilt was a log cabin and I made it from Eleanor Burns book. Her cutting charts and stacking/sewing instructions are so amazingly simple, ANYONE can follow her lead. I have approximately a dozen of her books in my quilting library (I love dyeing my own fabric; that's another whole section!) and would advise any and all beginning quilters to START w/Eleanor. I've taken classes in many wonderful techniques from dozens of instructors, but still use the basics I learned from Eleansor's Log Cabin Quilts book. Josi in FL

I like Eleanor Burns and had the privilege of meeting her in Paduca. She took the time with all of us ladies who had a book for her sign and even chit chatted for a minute. Have a few of her books and like how she explains what to do.

I love Eleanor Burns, She is a very bright and gifted lady, I have learned a great deal from her.

Eleanor Burn's Quilt in a Day books re-ligitimized a craft that had fallen between the cracks as women began to work outside their homes and had less time for sewing anything, much less quilts. I do not recall--that doesn't mean it wasn't there--any direct references to history in the Quilt in a Day books, but I was aware because of having books of vintage patterns that her techniques made it possible for women with limited time to get involved in a craft that is both useful and artful. Any author who encourages respect for the work women do, whether quilting, cooking, cleaning, or preaching has a reach that is immensely important. froggyintexas

I like her a lot. I have taken classes with her. She is very nice and is always so friendly. Her patterns are very easy to understand. I have several of her books. If you ever have a chance to take a class from her, I know you will enjoy it.

TexasSunshine 10-30-2011 05:11 PM

I love Eleanor Burns and like to watch her videos also. Years ago I took a class her sister Patty taught at a LQS for Amish Quilt in a Day. She made it very simple. I enjoy her book Egg Money Quilts.

arizonagirl 10-30-2011 05:22 PM

Eleanor Burns is an amazing woman. She raised her sons as a single mom and built her quilting empire at the same time. I have 2 of her books: Still Stripping and Day and Night. They are very easy to understand and follow along with. I am currently putting the last 2 borders on my black and orange Day and Night quilt that I am making for my son. This is the first quilt that I have been able to perfect the 1/4 seam. I hope to one day be lucky enough to meet her.

Greeter Eva 10-30-2011 06:02 PM

I like every thing about her, & yes I have learned some history from her. I have some of her books, & I have made the "Underground Railroad" quilt, which I really enjoyed.
I wish someday I can meet her in person.

Digitizingqueen 10-30-2011 06:21 PM

She is awesome - love her patterns lover her tv lessons - others call her the annoying quilting lady but she so grows on you she is one of my regular quilting friends I just have never met her in person...

seasaw2mch 10-30-2011 06:46 PM

I just learned who she is when one of our members posted a YouTube video of her. I watched that video and fell in love with not only the quilt she was making (Trip around the world) but with her relaxed style. She is a trip to watch. I have not bought any of her books yet but do plan to do so when I can afford to. I don't know much about her history but I'm sure she's one heck of a great person to know.

Wonnie 10-30-2011 06:58 PM

I'm on this board today because of Eleanor Burns and the first printing of her "Log Cabin Quilt" which I completed in two days and I've been quilting ever since.

Ginknee309 10-30-2011 07:12 PM

Because of "El" (as she is known) I have been working on a vintage quilt. I enjoy all her books and the stories she tells on her show. I have met her twice in Des Moines at the AQS shows (on one of the occasions I saw her several times over 2 days). I got to participate in one of her skits during one of her lectures. She is so charming and sweet. Her family is wonderful too!

Jean I have that book, I purchased it several years ago. I find it so easy to follow. I have made several log cabin quilts using her methods in the book and they really do go quite quickly. I am finishing up a quilt currently for DH for Christmas that is not exactly a traditional log cabin, but I have used her piecing methods to put this one together. I know you will enjoy making yours. Be sure to post a pic. Have fun!!

PKITTY1 10-30-2011 07:48 PM

I love Eleanor Burns. I like her quilts despite the history lessons she provides and would make them regardless. That being written, I have to say that I like her history lessons and personal reflections during her shows. I understand where she has been and it makes me respect her even more.

kjym 10-30-2011 07:50 PM

She is the greatest. My Daughter and I took her barn class at the Road to Ca. last year. She also dod a lecture that was so much fun. I came out with my ribs hurting from laughing so hard.
Oh her class was wonderful and she had 2 wonderful gals that helped us with our problems. We also were lucky enough that she joined us for lunch the day of the class.
It was the first class that I went to that I it was really easy and like I said when I had a problem the helper gals were right there.
Once you take a class etc with her you get used to the voice. My husband says her voice is like finger nails on a chalk board. But she is a wonderful teacher and the nicest loving person that I have ever met.
If you get the chance to take one of her classes do it.
kjym Kathy

I have taken a few of her classes and was fortunate to be picked to go to her meet and greet in Paducah. She is a riot! Such a life story she has. And, her patterns are written very well and easy to understand!

pinebeltquilter 10-30-2011 11:34 PM

I love Eleanor Burns. I have met her twice when AQS was meeting at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, and she is so nice and down to earth. Also, her son, Orion, was there, ad he was as nice as his mother.

duckydo 10-31-2011 02:29 AM

I love Eleanor Burns, she is a hoot, if you ever get a chance to see her in person go for it. I have taken a class of hers in Paducah and she is very good at teaching and she if very down to earth and very personable. Her books are very easy to understand. I admire her for the sacrifices she has made. AQS did not used to recognize her as a quilting teacher but she hung in there and is now very recognized. IMO she is one of the best

maddenkids8 10-31-2011 02:53 AM

When I took up quilting, after many years of sewing clothes and household items, her Log Cabin Book was my first quilt. It was easy to follow and informative. She has been very helpful and I like the vintage patterns that she has. I still use her books now, 20 years later.

janjanq 10-31-2011 02:55 AM

At first I couldn't stand Eleanor Burns. She sounded like a kindergarten teacher talking to 5 year olds. But once I made a quilt from her book and started watching her on tv regularly, I got used her and now find her charming. I've also met her - took a class she taught and found her to be a lovely person.

So many times I've watched one of her videos and she's done some simple way of doing something and I just wanted to bang my head against a wall because it never would have occured to me to do it that way. And her methods are ALWAYS faster and easier. She's TERRIFIC.

CarrieAnne 10-31-2011 03:57 AM

I really love her too. Would love to meet her in person, everyone who meets her always says she is so SWEET in person, and very kind.

scrapbeagle 10-31-2011 05:16 AM

I love Eleanor Burns and actually started quilting because I watched her show and thought "I can do that"!!!! Just brought my Egg Money Sampler quilt to the Long Arm Quilter this weekend. I can't wait to see how it comes out. The book had a lot of historical info and recipes. I enjoyed doing the sampler one lap sized quilt. Her instructions are very easy to understand.

How could you not like her?

I love her too. My first EB quilt in a Day was a trip around the world. In the beginning of the book she gave credit to her ex-husband for finding the methods she/her company uses to streamline quilt making. I found that refreshing. After making that quilt I attended a weekend retreat where she taught a class. She was a good teacher and so nice, making sure all in the class got to have a picture with her if they wanted it. She autographed everyone's book(Day and Night) that we were working from. I even bought a machine that she autographed. She is a hoot, especially at her trunk show. Her voice just makes me smile(unlike Julia Child who I couldn't stand). She has many good quilting tips and techniques.

tenngal 10-31-2011 11:02 AM

Eleanor is great! She explains how to quilt in a very down to earth way, so that even my 7 year old grandaughter can follow her directions.

bbeyes 10-31-2011 11:06 AM

Definitely, I met her at one of the quilt shows and she is very very nice.

karen924 10-31-2011 11:18 AM

I LOVE Eleanor's techniques, but the kindergarden teacher voice makes me crazy. I love her DVDs - can watch her anytime. The people that work with her, call her Miss Eleanor and adore her too!

Gabrielle's Mimi 10-31-2011 12:41 PM

I always liked EB and her patterns, and she is quite helpful for new quilters. However, I had a whole new respect for her when I attended a program at her shop in California recently. She was broke, divorced and had 2 small children whom she had to support. She told the group how she even had her kids help her "dumpster dive" for usable goods. She found a job at the local town rec center teaching quilt-making, so had to run home and whip up 2 sample place mats in order to show that she could actually quilt. Her classes soon became so popular that she wrote manuals (then books) to assist the students, and her classes tripled. Now, her adult sons and other family members work with her in her business. What a great success story of hard work, humility and determination!

Iraxy 10-31-2011 02:20 PM

I love her and her quilts. She is an inspiration and living the "when life gives you scraps, make quilts" adage. Keep tossing those scraps Eleanor!
PS, I have made 8 log cabin quilts from her pattern.

AnnR 10-31-2011 03:31 PM

I do like Eleanor Burns. She finds easier ways to do some of the more difficult jobs in piecing (Y seams, curved seams, etc). She explains things well and makes producing a quilt easier. I can't get with her flinging scraps over her shoulder, but that appears to have become her trademark.

Treasureit 10-31-2011 03:33 PM

I think she has a lot to contribute and has a great following...I personally can not listen to her voice for very long...sorry Eleanor! But she knows her stuff!

martha atha 10-31-2011 04:18 PM

I definatley love Eleanor Burns. I have done the Underground Railroad. She has some of the easiest techniques. I try to apply these techniques when doing all my quilts. I was fortunate to meet her in person in Nashville a few years back and she signed my Victory Quilts book. I am trying to have a collection of all her books. I also tape her show on RFDTV and enjoy watching her work and tell her stories.PS I also went to a seminar way back and I must say she is hilarious but educational as well.
