Embroidery Machine Users
Hi Guys,
I have always used Maderia Threads, but I would really love to know what you all use and your opinions on different threads. Hugs Caroline |
I'm using Brildor and I love it. Used Madeira too but it keeps breaking :(
I have used Maderia a lot and have never had a probem with it breaking. I have used it for several years and lots of embroidering on everything from demin to fine t-shirts, and never a problem. Sorry you are having a bad time. MaYbe it is dried out. Put it i nthe freezer for 2 hours to see it that helps.
I have just started using Floriani andI love it!
I use Isacord and have not had any problems.

I use Floriani, RA and Sulky and Prensia and Jenny Haskins; I don't have any problems with any of them. The RA is a great deal thru Sears website; it's only 3.95 spool, which is almost 1/2 price most LQS.
I use sulky, coats and Clark's.
I use Metro thread. It is a lot cheaper than any of the brands mentioned and does a good job, looks nice.
I use poly. under 75 cents for a spool. |
I use Madera or Sulky thread for embroidery. I avoid Coats and Clark. I don't like the lint that it makes or that it "strips" away from the core thread and has clumps of thread wrapped around the center thread.
I use Robison Anton, Sulky and Isacord of which I have the most spools. I have had great results with all brands of thread actually with both of my embroidery machines. I do know some machines can be 'picky' about certain brands or the way threads are wound, sometimes it just take a little testing and patience. My first Designer 1 didn't like any poly embroidery threads at all so I used only rayon. So don't be surprised if some threads don't perform perfectly. Some people buy just a few spools of new brands just in case their machine has a 'preference'. HTH
I love Isacord!
Isacord and King Tut
Isacord is my favorite.
Have used gutterman, madeira, and thats it thus far
I use just about everything except Madera. My machine doesn't like it for some reason. My primary thread is Isacord but I've used lesser expensive embroidery thread, polyester serger thread, coats and clark, metallic, cotton, and about every other name brand thread you can think of, embroidery and non embroidery.
I hear a lot about Floriani, it's very expensive, but the color result is stunning. I finally bought some to try but haven't yet. I got a recommendation for thread from a master embroiderer who orders online and does awesome projects but discovered the thread could not be washed, the item had to be dry cleaned or, depending on the medium, required special cleaning. I'd never run into that before so it's something to watch out for. If I can't throw it in the washing machine, it's not worth it to me. |
I use Exquisite thread, similar to Isacord but more affordable. Exquisite was formerly sold as Poly-X brand.
I use quite a few different ones, sulky, superior threads, thread art and robinson anton like them all
I have a Brother 2500D and it isn't picky at all about what it sews. I like the look of rayon best, but when I realized that I was needing about 100 different colors and then every time I picked out a new design I still didn't have exactly the color that I wanted, I started getting mine from a dealer in the UK who is selling thread made in Pakistan. When I have purchased every color the dealer carries I don't know who I will buy from next, but I can't afford the prices of many of the brands in our stores with the number of colors I want. I can't tell when my designs are finished which colors are from Pakistan and which colors I paid $8 a spool for.
I am trying to use up all the Brother thread that came with my machine (a few years ago) and Ihate that thread. I also do not like the Gutterman nor the Maderia thread.
By far my favorite, for all Machine Embroidery Applications, is the Sulky. Both my Pfaff and Brother love it. Little lint, less thread breaks and all over a good, steady thread. Kirsten |
Thanks guys,
it's really good to have all the different opinions.... I have never veered away from Maderia and I just thought it would be good to try something different! Hugs Carolne |
Try the Metro poly embroidery thread.. I have used it on my Janome 300E since I bought it a few years ago.. Once in awhile I'll get a shred, but not much..I always use a thread holder/heavy stand, that's placed a few inches back of the machine. This a tip I found online.. I have just purchased the box of Metro varigated..Can't wait to create with it...This thread is a lot less expensive than most...I don't want to say 'cheaper'..as it's a nice quality...
Robison Anton, FusFus, Isacord, Aurifil, Wonderfil, Mettler, Guterman, = all good except for the Sulky variety which breaks on all of my machines.
I've been using Robison-Antion Poly and Rayon , Love there thread. For at less 25 years . Just see
what works best in your machine. good luck....:o |
When I got my Viking (designer two) I bought tons of sulky on sale at Joann's. I did not know that there were special threads that worked better. That said....I do not have a problem with the sulky thread. I now have the Diamond. Sulky works great on it too. I also get some threads at LQS...do not know the brand! I guess I am lucky my machines have not been fussy!
I usually use Sulky. I do have some Coats and Clark but it doesn't work well in my machine - too much breaking and linty. (But the c&c works fine in my regular machine so sometimes I use it on there for decorative stitches.)
I started out with Madera, but switched to RobisonAnton, and love it! I have both a Designer Diamond and a Pfaff Creative Sensation and both stitch wonderfully with the Robison threads.....I have issues with both machines with the Madera breaking.
I use Robinson Anton. Thanks for the heads up regarding purchasing from Sears--had no idea they carried embroidery thread.
I have a Brother Innovis 4000D. It will sew with anything. I do use the embroidery needles for the 6 needle Brother machines. I believe the eye is slightly larger, which may help with not having problems with fraying. The needles. Organ HAx130EB 80/12, were bought from Allbrands at their recommendation. They did say that if I was doing very dense fine work I could use the size 11, or for thicker denser fabrics use the 14. I have never had to buy those.
I buy sets of any polyster embroidery thread from Ebay. I usually get 50 to 100 spools or more as a set. I average less than $1 per 1100 yd spool. I cringe to think about the money I would have spent if I had spent $4 to $8 per spool. One of my sets is ARC thread (not from Ebay) which has +300 colors. I am never at a loss to match up a color. I have not used rayon thread. When I bought my machine, rayon had a bad problem with bleeding when washed. I understand that the bleeding problem has been solved, but I have so much of the polyster that I just don't need any more thread. This year at the IQF in Houston, I bought every metallic that Marathon made....in the very large spools. I am really hoping my very used Brother doesn't argue with me about this thread. lol Guess I went a little bit crazy! |
i use Kingstar which I buy from www.embroiderystore.com. Kingstar has a wonderful shine, never have problems with shredding or breakage and the metallics run through my Janome 10001 and my Babylock 6 needle perfectly. Love -love - love Kingstar thread. I use a thread stand and the 5000 meter cones.
I use Royal, Outback, Isacord ,Robison Anton, Mills, QA and Birch. My machine doesn't seem to mind. They all work fine. I have quite a number of Maderia but they are small spools not mini cones.
I have been collecting Royal for several years. Outback (by Glen Harris) I bought the whole range,100 mini cones for $295.00 last year. I also have quite a few RA. Picked them up for about $1.28 per 1100yd. mini cones. Yesterday I got 6 spools of Brother bobbin thread with a $40.00 off bonus coupon (spend $100.00) bought other stuff as well. Last time I bought batting and it already had 20% off before the $40.00. |
Check out Marathon never had a problem...they have a web site
I use Madera or Sulky. I love them both....
I use Madeira, Robison/Anton, Sulky and Floriani and don't have problems with any of them.
I would SERIOUSLY suggest that you buy the smallest spool from a manufacturer available, and only one spool. Try it and determine what needle works best with that brand with your machine; will your machine sew it very fast, medium or only slowly? I select a very, very dense - about 60,000 stitches design to try out thread on. If a brand will sew well in that environment I have never had it sew poorly in other designs. If your brand needs a different needle or speed for optimum usage (read to prevent breakage) keep a note of that in a notebook. Although you may prefer particular brands the time may very well come when only a not preferred brand has the exact-to-die-for color you want and you will need to know how you made it work in your machine. Also, just because brand A works wonderfully well in poly or rayon does not mean that it will be the go-to-brand for metallics. Those need to be tested separately. Some machines love metallics. Some call them MY CUSS CUSS CUSS COLORS! You have to love the independence of our machines.
I mostly use Robison Anton and Isacord. Poly mostly. I like that because it is washable and durable. My friend uses Sulky and swears by it. I haven't used it yet. I think it is mostly what your machine likes and how it is "fed" to the machine. My machine does really good if I use a thread holder beside so the thread has a farther way to go to the machine.
