Wonnie: This is what I have done!! There are so many free patterns on the internet.... one should never have to BUY one in a life time..... I now have three -3ring binders full of patterns... whenever a friend says they need a pattern I have them look thru the books and it is so easy to just let them borrow it...

What--you think you are the only one who spends days looking for something. That is an award given to most quilters. LOL

You bet I do.....I'm afraid if I save them, something will go wrong with the computer and I will lose them. But common sense tells me that they are 'lost' already. But it is fun when I am looking for something else and run across a pattern or two or three.

When our first son was young & in Cub Scouts, I was a den mother & den leader coach who taught crafts to other den mothers. I had a huge binder of crafts that yrs. later I just had to send to a thrift store. Once we moved up here to Wash. nobody had Cub Scouts. I could turn any trash into something crafty. In early yrs. of my marriage when my Navy husb. was at sea, I learned from another wife how to make the cutest bird cage out of metal wire hangers. |
As I am typing this I am looking at my closet with 10 LARGE binders with patterns I have downloaded from the internet plus the 50+ quilt books that were given to me and the numerous books that I have purchased myself, oh and I forgot, I have a folder on my computer with probably easily 75 - 100 downloaded patterns. YIKES I think I am addicted. ARGGHH :) :?:

And in the evenings, while watching TV, I started going through the items one by one and pitching those things I knew I would NEVER use. Then, at random, I started cutting out the things I knew I would use along with their instructions if any available and, using a glue stick to hold it to the background of computer paper, just barely tapped the back of each item just enough to hold it in place until I could insert it into a plastic protector. What I ended up with is something that resembles a magazine but full of just those things that appealed to me. Might even throw in a recipe or two. Sometimes I would even throw in a picture of a great room I'd like to duplicate some day. Well, long story short, over time, I now have 4 books of just fun things, 2 quilt books ( I looked through the magazines and maybe only really found one pattern I truly loved so cut it out along with the directions and pitched the book) and 2 for recipes. It works GREAT for me because in the evening now I have fun looking through them and, best of all, I not only am constantly inspired, I can actually FIND what I'm looking for!

Hundreds!

I am in the process of organize/catalog them...I finally got all all the ones from magazines/online in clear plastic sleeves and in notebooks...next will be the Simplicity,McCall's, etc. that are going into file cabinets...(I got that idea from someone on the board)...then I am going to organize the panels, FQ's, yardage...my poor sewing machine must think I don't love it anymore...

Hi Wonnie -
I had a brain tumor removed in 1993 and although I am thrilled to be alive I cannot remember patterns I looked at yesterday. I use the computer as an alternate for a brain. I have made one folder on the computer called "Quilt Ideas" and then I make small thumbnails of every pattern I have purchased or downloaded free. After all, some of the pattern names don't convey the appearance of the quilt .... In this way, I can scan the folder and pick out an appropriate pattern for a new fabric I just bought. I can also find the correct name of the pattern to check my alphabetized holdings. ==Judy |
I use the notbook thing also. I plan to put in dividers and organize my patterns by type.

OMG..
I just last week went through all my patterns and took the ones that I know I will never get to doing ( I would say at least 50 or 60) and took them to my quilting meeting...what they didn't want, I will take to the other quilting group and after that...who knows where they will end up...... I see something online and have got to copy it and then maybe one out of ten I get around to sewing.......oh well, someone might like them....... does that answer your question? |

Yes, and I have even bought 2 of the same pattern!! Darn!!
|
I spent the morning going through my magazines and taking out patterns and tip sheets. I won't subscribe to any more magazines - I'll never use all the patterns I save, buy, and print. Love looking at them and trying to figure out how to organize them.

I belong to the same club you do, Can't Find Anything When I Need It. From what I have seen and heard, the numbers in this club are growing.

I do too... I have started putting post its on the
the pages w/name if quilt |
I used to sell patterns on ebay and had over 1,000 patterns. Now that I'm out of the ebay business, I'm trying to slowly get my patterns sold at garage sales I have. It's really sad though at the thought of so many people don't know how to sew. I've had comments from people when they saw all my patterns to ask "What are these" and another person said I haven't sewn since home ec in high school. But to answer your question the patterns that I've kept for myself I have organized by catagory first and then file them by the pattern number. works for me.
|
You bet. I spend my time looking.
|
oh my...YeS! and the bad part is..I do machine embroidery too and have trouble finding things. makes me nuts!

If you have an IPhone, there is an app called PatternPal which is great to organize patterns so you can find them easily, just search under sewing in the App store. There is also a program called Quilters Organizer for your computer which is awesome! I hate to say I have both and still not organized but its certainly not the programs' fault as I think I'm a little ADHD so it's frequently hard for me to get on task!!

Endless if magazines are counted but my books are actually organized and patterns and mags for the most part but love them!
|
I have 12 Lever Arch folders full of patterns and other items that I have printed out and put into the plastic sleeves.I have them all in order with applique, free Fatcat patterns, pieced and all other sewing thing each in a different folder. I can find the patterns by going to the right one. Lot less hassle that way.
|
Knew there is an issue just could not name it.....cloth stash & now pattern stash.
|
I have tried everything to organize magazines. Even took pictures and downloaded into computer and printed out picture and where to find the pattern. To much hassel and my tastes change. I finally came to the conclusion that I just love to get them in the mail and slowly look thru them.
So now the only patterns I really use are from Quilt in a Day books. |
What a great idea! Thanks!
