english paper piecing hexagon hand project- 1st blocks

10 Attachment(s)
for a summer travel hand project i decided to work on a hexagon english paper piecing project with a group from the Quilt Pattern Magazine. here are pics of the first of my blocks- i decided to do them all in pinks, black & whites- after i finish them all i think they will make a pretty cool quilt- some of the participants are making them into mugrugs or other small complete projects- i'm just doing the blocks for now.

WOW!!! How awesome are you! You have done a fantastic job. I love everyone of them. They look so good together. I have never done English paper piecing. I know you do it by hand, that's all I know about it. But, wonderful fabric choices!

nativetexan 06-17-2012 09:20 AM

goodness gracious!! how large are those? they are all beautiful!!

dakotamaid 06-17-2012 09:57 AM

I love these! Really love the color combo. I may borrow this idea from you. How large across are the completed blocks? :)

Fraew 06-17-2012 10:05 AM

Squeeling over here! Love it!

I love EPP. I have learned most of what I know from the website of the woman who is doing the patterns in Quilt pattern magazine. She has an excellent site with lots of free patterns. She used to do a stitch along and did some great patterns.

ckcowl 06-17-2012 12:09 PM

most of my blocks are finished at 5 1/4" -- using 1 1/2" templates- for some reason- even though i'm using the size that is called for mine are not the 3 1/2" size that is stated with the program i have not figured out why that is but am happy with the size of them as they are. i am enjoying seeing all the different ways you can put together a few simple shapes to create different blocks. i am working on them mainly during breaks at work so i think i am 6 or 7 blocks behind but i put together a folder with a diagram of each new block so i can just keep (trudging) along. i will show you more when i get a few more done.

SittingPretty 06-17-2012 12:37 PM

Those are just wonderful! I'm working on a simple GFG, myself.

nativetexan 06-17-2012 12:46 PM

THANKS. I couldn't think of doing them smaller. they are lovely.

Scraps 06-17-2012 01:13 PM

CK VERY nice!! Beautiful job! Everyone loves the quilting you did on my quilt!! Will get the binding on when I get back home. Fun to meet you!

Dear Me, I Am Going to Pieces!

ckcowl - It has to do with the way your are measuring the hexagons. I am sure yours are the right size but I bet you are measuring from flat edge to flat edge. The size of a shape is determined by the length of its edge, shown as distance "S" in the diagram I have uploaded. This makes matching of shapes very easy. A 1" hexagon goes with a 1" diamond, which goes with a 1" triangle, etc. A 3" hexagon would measure about 5-1/4" from flat edge to flat edge.

thanks msdesigns- for clearing up my measuring confusion- i knew how the template pieces were measured & how they fit together but for some reason i thought i had read in the beginning that the blocks would be 3 1/2"- so when i made the the first one & it measured 5 1/4" i was (stumped) ... looked at it & looked at it---but figured---i like this size so---continue on- i'm glad it was just me--- & i am in fact doing them right- i am really enjoying these & hope you don't mind that i shared my blocks here too....also- welcome- i'm glad you showed up to see what all the talk was about :)

MsDesigns 06-18-2012 03:35 PM

You are more than welcome ckcowl. I am so glad you are enjoying the workshop! I am more than happy for you to share your finished blocks here at the QuiltingBoard. 8o)

Love your blocks, can you post any links to the blog or whatever, so we can get the patterns too???? Thanks!

joyce888 06-18-2012 04:50 PM

Very pretty blocks. Love the fabric choices.

Rubesgirl 06-18-2012 05:28 PM

Love your blocks and colors! I started an EPP pattern that uses 1" hexagons. It will probably take me the rest of my life to finish, but what the heck ... it's better for me to keep busy than to sit idle. :-)

here's a couple more.

bearisgray 06-25-2012 04:22 PM

I love all those variations.

Now I know what to do with the 'dog ears' - I had purchased the diamond forms and just wasn't able to get all the edged 'tucked in'!

SueSew 06-25-2012 04:35 PM

I love the pinks and blacks and the print choices, but your piecing of the hexes is just fantastic. That will make a beautiful quilt when you are done. THEN we get to see how you choose to quilt it! I guess that's a triple treat.

babyfireo4 06-25-2012 04:37 PM

Those are gorgeous! Might just have to suscribe with DH's next check so I can join ;)

rrhaigh 06-25-2012 05:00 PM

Absolutely gorgeous blocks. I have never seen so many different shapes using the hexigons/paper piecing. I just cut out a bunch of 2.5" squares to do hexigons, but haven't started yet. I may have to check into those patterns! Looks like lots of fun and very different. I love it.

ckcowl 06-28-2012 03:34 PM

i've completed a few more this week- should i keep adding them here? not really sure how to go about sharing them as i get them done...anyhow---here's the newest-

dakotamaid 06-28-2012 03:36 PM

Go right ahead and share here! I love seeing your blocks.

babyfireo4 06-28-2012 05:36 PM

I'm with dakotamaid, please share them here so we can follow without searching through all the new posts :) Just wondering do you have to purchase all the pieces or are there printable templates from Pattern Pastiche? Curious to know if the subscription fee will cover or if I'd need to order things to get started, weighing options before I jump in head first!

earthwalker 06-28-2012 05:45 PM

Beautiful! I am an EPPer from way back. In fact that is how I learned/started my "quilting journey", then of course I stumbled upon the American way and now I enjoy both forms of the craft. You know EPP is addictive....once you get going, you won't stop and you will get very antsy if you end up in a waiting room or holed up in an airport without your "hexies".:)

the (templates) are available from the website- there is also graph paper for the shapes you can print off- & use to make your shapes any size you need....you can purchase the pieces from PaperPieces.com- (i already had most of the ones i needed- and ordered a couple additional- because to me it's worth it) but you are not required to order them- you can print off the sheets & make your own if you want to take the time- and i think alot of the people participating are doing just that....it would be great for some of you to join in- then we could see different color combo's along with mine :)

babyfireo4 06-29-2012 06:21 AM

That's great!
I just want to buy a ton of differnt pieces til I know how addicting it is! Have plenty of 1in. hexies, it's the other shapes I'm not sure about

babyfireo4 06-29-2012 06:52 AM

Just joined, not to wait for the subscription code to get started :)

they are lovely! you are going to have one beautiful quilt. I'm still trying to get enough paper pieces cut out! I might just give up on DH's next payday and buy them!!!

cmg625 07-09-2012 07:42 PM

These are just beautiful. How funny, I was just thinking about this today at work and was thinking that I would like to try something like that only I had forgotten what the name of the pattern was. thanks so much for showing us what you have done.

earthwalker 07-09-2012 11:46 PM
