As some of you remember, I've been working on some, ready for this? scrappy, floral, watercolor, log cabin squares.  I have 75 done, but it's not enough to make a decent sized quilt, so I plan on adding to the pile to make it 120. Here's the problem and where I need help. I found a design I like, after laying out at least 14 of them, but, I only like the middle of the design--the corners need changes. but I don't know how to go about creating those changes, and I've found it's very difficult to try to simply rotate squares while the whole thing is on the floor.
So--being unfamiliar with EQ6, is working out this design something this program could do? Could I program it to create different designs of a log cabin quilt that is 10 by 12 squares? If someone has EQ6 and wants to play, let me know, or I may consider purchasing one. :D |
Karla, my plate is full right now or I would gladly help you out!! Quilt Wizard will let you do this and it is much less expensive than EQ. You can go to EQ's website and check it out  It is about $30
|
Is QW easier to use? I need easy these days... just don't want to add another tricky techie program that needs two books to get me through it.
|
Quilt Wizard has the very basics of EQ. EQ is great but it does take a learning curve and time!
|
So--what are the biggest differences? I think I've asked this before--I'm going to go search.
|
Hi, Barnbum
I have EQ6 and have some time to play. Can you send me the layout that you have, and let me know what part you like? EQ6 has many blocks in the library including log cabin blocks. It is very easy to do a layout in straight sets or on point. Debra |
Oh yes!! Thanks so much! Be right there....

Here are two layouts.
Hope this helps. Debra |
Debra--that's amazing--you even put floral fabrics in there and it's 10 by 12 and EVERYTHING!! Wow. I like it. I only saw one lay out...are there two?
Do you like this one better than the 2nd photo I sent you? I sent this to my daughter to get her opinion. Oh--I wanna play!! |

Here is the second one.

Wow! EQ6 does that? I have fun playing with Quilt Wizard, but it looks like this other software does a lot more. So, it's hard to learn? That's what I've picked up from other threads.
|
Oh Debra--that's a beauty too!! Wow--what a program!! You made awesome options!!
Is there a way to make the other one I liked into a 10 by 12? My daughter is loving these. I'm going back to look at both... Oh--saravincent--YES--you play too. :D |
Rachel says #2 looks like elbows and knees-  She wrecked so many design ideas telling me she saw angry seahorses and elbows and knees. Sigh.... teens!
Rachel also suggested last night that I made an all light square--or four actually--for the spots between the inner and second rings... what are your thoughts on that? Oh--I think I like it the way you've got it... |
Thanx dungeonquilter, I like the 2nd one too, but the 1st is my fav. It would be a fun one to make.

I've been using EQ since EQ4 ... EQ6 is amazing.
Here's how it started ... about7 yeasrs ago I told Hubby that I wanted a quilting software (He's a puter_Geke) One who supports my "habit" He researched this with me and on his own ... I was fine and you will be tii, |

Okay--I'm stuck between Debra's first design and the one below... it'd be 56" square an awkward size for a quilt? I'm kind of a rectangular quilt person... What do you all think?
Or--this one needs to grow two rows wider and maybe 4 taller.... Or maybe I should just make it 8x8 and leave it--then I could lay it out now!! I have enough squares. Then I could get started on the next 749 projects I have planned! Also--would you border it--with a mixed floral fabric? Or leave it as is? |
Karla....where are the other layouts you had?
I can't find them..probably looked right past them, but there was one on those that you posted before that was nice. |
My two pennyworth is that I like the first one best, but they are both nice.

Here you go, Terri: http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/18907.page

Terri--that's the one Debra worked on for me--did you see it on page 1? It was the one I was going to pick--but I wanted a garden effect... and the corners are too separate to look like that.
|
Ok, got it.
I still like the other one. Maybe I'm just liking it being square and not rectangle. |
I have been off the computer for a few days. Trying to finish quilting my bargello quilt. Just the binding and label left now.
EQ6 is very easy to learn. It comes with very clear instructions, and built in tutorials. It only took a few minutes to alter one of the library blocks to resemble the watercolour block. Then it is just playing with the layout. It is simple to change the layout to the number of rows and columns wanted. Best part is that you can print out or export a copy of each one you want to consider. I have used it alot for round robins, as I can take a picture of the quilt so far, and put it in the middle, and add my borders to it. Debra |
Thought I'd stick my oar in - I like Debra's 2! Just going to check your original layouts, Karla!
|
And I like your 2 with the corners as they are but I also like 6! Are we being ANY help at all? LOL
|
 kn3--well--tell me if square quilts are odd (56" by 56")... if not #6 it's going to be. I think it should have one more row all around, so 9x9 at least--but I'm not sure how to do that. And I'll do a search for a perfect border--if I don't find one--it'll be borderless. :D
I'm working on the last of the squares now--actually I'm making more than I need so I can play with colors and have the option of leaving the bold sunflowers out. |

Oh--k3n--not 9'-that was 9 blocks by 9 blocks! :D 8 by 8 blocks will make it 56" each way--and I thought it should be bigger. I love your binding ideas!!
Oh--it's to the long arm master for me for anything bigger than a wall hanging or baby quilt!! I hope to have 4-5 tops to take her by the end of summer. I'm giving Quail Summit a little quilt show on Aug 9th, so I'll hang on to the tops for that. Kennedy (my barn buddy) and I are visiting our two favorite quilt shops today to pick up more fabric for a Triple Irish Chain...then I'll work on those log cabin squares when I get back! |

BUT isn't 9 x 8 = 72? :D |
 The squares are 7.5" so will finish at 7", so if it's 8 blocks square--56" square. Kind of short. That's why I wanted to add some on all sides... it still needs to be square for that design though--I'll stop fighting that concept.

Okay--now that we're on the same page--come up with what to do with the next round of blocks to make it look pretty--eh?
I'm off to pick up Kennedy! |
Well for starters, I'd finish off the points of the four big squares, but I don't know what else. Could you show a layout of the full thing again with some options? Wish I had EQ6 - might have to put it on my Christmas list...
|
Final decision. I played with adding an outer row and I like it. Now I just have to sew this baby together, then figure out if it should have a border, and if yes, if I have fabric suitable for a border.
I can start sewing Thursday.... busy days ahead. Quail Summit is coming for their horse show! :D |
It's perfect - I LOVE it! :D
