It's amazing how many well known quilt designers use EQ to design the projects they sell!

I am thrilled to finally be able to create some quilts in EQ7. What really jump-started me (after 5 years of getting mostly nowhere) was a free video tutorial series by Kari Schell called "Catch the Waves": https://www.onpointquilter.com/blog/...-quilt-newbies She also has a blog with short video tutorials in her archives: https://www.onpointquilter.com/ . I found her Irish Chain quilt helpful: https://www.onpointquilter.com/blog/double-irish-chain |

I have had EQ 6, 7, and now 8....Learning curve to each one, but oh what a program! I often redraw patterns so that I am more clear about how they will look.
|
I have 7 and updated for 8 and I find it so much easier.
|
One thing I can't figure out and can't find an answer for in the help files or the EQ block is how to make a shaped border.
I need to cut the corners off of my larger quilts so that they're not on the floor. I can't figure out how to draw that. Can anyone point me in the right direction? |
Elizabeth, I can only suggest printing out your quilt on paper, and use a ruler to draw where you want to cut the corners off. Then you may be able to draw up those end blocks in EQ and print out foundation patterns to suit.
This is a bit late, you may already have found the solution. |
Can anyone tell me how to re-install my designs back into EQ7? I've updated to windows 10 (and dislike it very much). I can open one at a time, but that only saves them in the top window, and I need them to be visable in the bottom window.

My EQ 7 folder (which I still have) has the projects in a folder PJ7. If you reinstalled the program, look for the PJ7 folder in Documents / My EQ 7 (or some other wording like that) and drag your designs into it (I think that should work).. On the open screen, at least EQ 8 shows where it is looking |
I recently purchased EQ8 and have only made it through lesson 1. I think I have a handle on that lesson but not lesson 2. I will be watching this thread closely. Thanks for the links. no to save this thread.

Betty, thank you so much for your help. My EQ7 was only downloaded and the exe file has disappeared from the old computer, so I have no idea how my clever son managed to transfer the program to the new computer, though I did have to insert my ID no. The PJ7 file was in documents, but when I just looked there was nothing in there. So managed to find it elsewhere and dragged it in. Joy! It works. I will have to ask to company for a new download so I still have it. I'm really hating this windows 10 as I find it does things I don't want done, and can't do others that I did in Win 7. Hopefully it will get me to fall into line soon. lol

You may want to sign up for the EQ Blog as well. They have sew alongs and challenges as well as instruction.

I’m embarrassed to even be asking. I ha EQ when it first started and never used it. This thread looks like a great place to ask questions. My quilting life is pushing me to try this again.
First question; what operating system is used? What do I need on the computer to support EQ8? |
One time I felt I was beginning to understand EQ. Then, I stepped away from it for a couple of months and yep, I'm back to square one. I think it will be a New Years Resolution. Ha ha It may be good for a long, cold winter.

quick question--has anyone done the online EQ lessons being offered? There are 3 levels of lessons and I'm interested but really do not want to start at level 1 since I've used it for some time now plus I don't want to pay to do what I've already learned. Let me know if you can about the differences in the 3 classes--I emailed EQ but of course they want you to start with the first one.
Thanks |
I didn't bother with the lessons, I couldn't keep my interest and focus up long enough to get through them. I played with the software, and when there was something I couldn't figure out on my own, I looked it up in the manual.
|
Same as Peckish….I figured it out on my own and used manual and the website to answer questions.
|
I also have figured things out as I run into problems. I use EQ8 a few times a month. It has saved me money as I have created many quilts in EQ and then never make them thus saving me, my time, fabric, batting, and thread! Some of my designs do make it as quilts and it helps to estimate yardage and determine color choices. Yes, there are others ways to do this but I enjoy the features in this product.

Is there any way to get EQ8 on a disk instead of having to buy it as a download?
|
No. Most computers don’t even have disk drives anymore.
Why do you want a disk? |
It looks like even if you "purchase" it and have it shipped all you get is the license number and directions
This is copied from the site ...... New Delivery: Download right away, or have it shipped! The shipped EQ8 retail box contains a software download license. There is NO media device (CD, DVD, USB) included. There is a License ID and License Password found in the package. This information will allow you to download the software from the EQ website. You will select either PC or Mac at the time of the download. Actually once you purchase it and register it it is easy to install on a computer or even move it to another computer. |
This is an older thread but it has a lot of good information. I've been toying with the idea of purchasing EQ8 to get the Dear Jane Add On because I'd like to make the DJ quilt and use FPP. I've been watching a Youtube channel, Canary Quilts, and she's using the EQ8+Add On and doing FPP and applique. Right now, Quilt In A Day has EQ8 on sale for $167.96. The Add On is $49 on EQ's site.
Has anyone used the Add On to make the DJ blocks? |
the Dear Jane software (with manual) used to be available [also] as a stand-alone program. you didn't have to have any version of EQ.
they have apparently discontinued the stand-alone version. i saw a few for sale on ebay. the prices were "all over the place." it would be a very good idea to contact the seller to make sure you'd be getting the stand-alone version. i just looked at mine (for the first time in years.) it works with windows 10. i don't know about windows 11, but it think it probably would. |

Has anyone used the Add On to make the DJ blocks? Edited to add: I wouldn't purchase the whole EQ program just for the Dear Jane blocks. Do you know that the full sized patterns are all in the Dear Jane book, for much, much less money? |
I have the older stand alone version of Dear Jane. If you already own EQ8 (or even 7) I might go the add on route as I am not fond of the stand alone version - mostly because I am so used to where everything is in EQ8. I think that the stand alone version was based on EQ5.
If you do not already own EQ I might aim for the stand alone version (unless you want really want EQ for other projects). I am still running windows 10 and just re-loaded the stand alone version of Dear Jane on my laptop in the sewing room with thoughts of starting a quilt and had no issues with loading it. I looked on Ebay and Amazon - curious to see if the older version was still available - be very careful - several folks are selling just the manual with no software (the biggest one I saw was on Amazon) - but there are a lot of them on Ebay that do come with the disk. Good luck and while this is an older thread, some of us who are avid EQ users still subscribe to the thread!! |
I didn't know the blocks were in the book. Thanks. I would assume you just measure the pieces in the blocks and add 1/4" or so???
|
One last question on DJ. I think I'll skip the software and get the book. I can do my own measuring, right?
My question is: which book do I get? I see there's a "newer version" released in 2021 with a blue cover and the yellow book was released much earlier. What's the difference? |

Hi, Colleen :) I have the original book by Brenda Manges Papadakis, so I am not sure what the story is with a different one. I believe this is the one I have: Dear Jane The 225 Patterns From The 1863 Jane A Stickle Quilt ~ 1996 Copy | eBay
I am not sure what you mean by "I can do my own measuring, right?" Sorry if I'm being dense :) I was trying to add a picture of my Dear Jane, but can't seem to figure it out. As you can tell, I'm an idiot when it comes to technology LOL :) |

This is a picture of my Dear Jane that I posted to my old blog back in the day when I was still blogging LOL :) |

This is a picture of my Dear Jane that I posted to my old blog back in the day when I was still blogging LOL :) I am still in the planning stages. It looks like you followed the original in your fabric colors. I will more than likely use the software as I want to enlarge the quilt but retain the look so my blocks will more than likely be larger than the 4.5. |
Thank you for your kind words :) Making Dear Jane was an interesting journey. One I'm glad I took :)

I approached this the same way I do any pieced block - I traced it out on freezer paper, then cut the block apart for the templates. You add your seam allowance to those templates. Or, as I usually do - trace around the templates onto my fabric and then add seam allowance. I hope this was clear and helpful :)

I was thinking I'd have to measure all the pieces in a block so I could do FPP. DUH. I just need to trace and add 1/4" for seam allowance. |
You told me something I didn't know - that the Dear Jane book was reissued :) I'm glad to hear that because it's a classic.
